Entrepreneurship in a New Reality
Miroslav Rebernik, 2021

Opis: Entrepreneurship is the strongest driver of economic growth and development and has a very large impact on overall social development. The Global Entrepreneurship Monitor (GEM) has a history of 22 years of entrepreneurship research, with a special focus on the earliest stages, when business opportunities are perceived and individuals decide whether to engage in entrepreneurship. Their direct living environment, especially the prevailing cultural values, the company's tendency to entrepreneurship and the orderliness of the business environment, have a great influence on the involvement of individuals in entrepreneurial activities. Accordingly, the conceptual framework of GEM is set, which enables the treatment of individuals and their attitude towards entrepreneurship, perception of entrepreneurship and involvement in the establishment and / or ownership and management of a company. With its help, we can therefore gain a deeper insight into national entrepreneurship and its characteristics and a more complete picture than can be provided by various statistical sources based solely on data obtained from existing companies.

A Variety of Entrepreneurial Motives
Miroslav Rebernik, Karin Širec, Polona Tominc, Katja Crnogaj, Matej Rus, Barbara Bradač Hojnik, 2020, znanstveno delo

Opis: In the world’s largest longitudinal survey, the Global Entrepreneurship Monitor (GEM), we have been exploring important features of entrepreneurship for 21 years, with particular emphasis on the earliest stages when business opportunities are perceived and individuals decide whether to engage in entrepreneurship. GEM was designed to (1) measure differences in attitudes towards entrepreneurship, activities and aspirations of individuals in as many countries as possible, (2) identify factors that encourage or hinder entrepreneurial activity, especially in relation to societal values, personal characteristics and the entrepreneurial ecosystem, (3) provide a platform for assessing the impact of entrepreneurial activity on economic growth in a given economy, and (4) identify the necessary policy measures to strengthen entrepreneurship. With the help of this research, we better understand society's attitude towards entrepreneurship and characteristics of the individual, such as perception of one's own abilities for entrepreneurial activity, ability to perceive opportunities, entrepreneurial intentions, and fear of failure. As GEM monitors entrepreneurial activity throughout the phases of the life cycle (nascent, new businesses and established businesses, discontinuation), according to impact (high growth, innovation, internationalization) and by type (early-stage entrepreneurship activity, employee entrepreneurship activity), the picture is much richer than the one that is based only on data gathered from ordinary statistical databases.

Ocena korporacijskega podjetništva na primeru velikega logističnega podjetja
Anja Gjerek, 2019, diplomsko delo

Innovating in a Startup: Germany versus Slovenia
Martina Repnik, 2018, diplomsko delo

Opis: Startup companies are enterprises, which are created with the purpose of growth. The driving force of their growth is innovation, which contributes to the competitive advantage of companies in general. Those companies that have a competitive advantage over other companies can exist on a larger scale: they can employ a greater number of workers which contributes to lower unemployment rates in national economies. That is why startup companies are so important for a country’s well-being, and it is crucial for governments that want economic growth to support them. The most efficient way the government can support startups is through creating the right environment where they can exist and develop. There are different factors that contribute to an overall efficient environment; the most relevant one for this thesis is innovation activity. In the thesis, all the relevant factors were analyzed and the chosen countries (Germany and Slovenia) were compared based on their scores. This way, a more startup-friendly business environment was established. Moreover, interviews with startups from each observed country were conducted to further confirm/deny the theoretical conclusions established in the thesis. From all the information gathered, both theoretical and practical, our assumption that Germany has a better ecosystem for startups to exist in was confirmed.

Self-assessment system
Mitja Kovač, Patricia Kotnik, 2015, izvirni znanstveni članek

Opis: Efficient regulatory mechanisms that induce innovation, co-operation and deter competition law infringements have recently been the subject of growing attention. Competition is essential to the innovation process which in general terms enables entrepreneurship. But so too is co-operation between firms which requires an exchange of information and may lead to inefficient collusive behaviour. The optimal trade-off between the provision of stable entrepreneurial incentives and the new European competition law’s reform with the self-assessment system has been largely missing from the current scholarly debate. This paper identifies the unintended, harmful horizontal side effects of this new European self-assessment system upon the entrepreneurial activity, offers a legal evaluation of the optimal entrepreneurial incentive mechanisms and provides legal and entrepreneurial arguments for an improved regulatory response.

Personality: blessing or curse?
Michael Forster, Philipp Parrer, Nina Maria Wöss, 2013, izvirni znanstveni članek

Opis: This paper is based on a study which investigates the relevance of management competencies in Austrian organizations, focusing on start-ups. The study as well as the existing literature confirms that personal competencies such as ambition, selfconfidence or assertiveness are perceived as more important by start-ups than by established companies. However, further results of the paper show that especially leadership competencies play a major role in developing a growing start-up whereas personal competencies fade into the background and can even have a negative impact on turnover growth. In general, the paper discusses special characteristics of competence classes for start-ups and examines differences and similarities in comparison to established companies. As it has already been indicated, the evidence leads to different and surprising considerations for entrepreneurs and growing start-ups.

Cultural foundations of female entrepreneurship in Mexico
Martha Cantú Cavada, Vito Bobek, Hazbo Skoko, Anita Maček, 2018, izvirni znanstveni članek

Opis: This paper analyses possible challenges and opportunities that Mexican female entrepreneurs face during the establishment of new enterprises. Based on in-depth interviews with female entrepreneurs and entrepreneurship experts, authors researched opportunities in the form of governmental and non-governmental institutional support, growing entrepreneurship, social awareness and women empowerment. However, lack of credibility, fear of vulnerability to criticism and social pressure are some challenges associated with gender egalitarianism. In such, the authors proved that Mexican culture impacts women in some ways more than the others. Institutional collectivism was the cultural dimension with higher positive impact on women, followed by gender egalitarianism with a neutral to positive impact and the power distance with a neutral influence on women.

The relationship between optimism, pre-entrepreneurial curiosity and entrepreneurial curiosity
Mitja Jeraj, 2014, izvirni znanstveni članek

Opis: Background: Entrepreneurship and entrepreneurs become more and more interesting fields for a scientific research. This paper addresses the relationship between optimism, pre-entrepreneurial curiosity and entrepreneurial curiosity as three determinants of entrepreneurial psychology. Literature review showed optimism is important for entrepreneurs and influence them mostly in a positive way. Although entrepreneurial curiosity is important determinant for entrepreneurs and it was connected with entrepreneurial self-efficacy, openness, and company's growth the connection with optimism remained unexplored until this research. Methods: A multi-country empirical validation was conducted on a sample of entrepreneurs from Slovenia and USA. A structural equation modelling, exploratory factor analysis (EFA) and confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) were used to develop a model, which complement theoretical predisposition and fit the data. Results: The results of the study show that higher levels of optimism lead to higher levels of pre-entrepreneurial curiosity and higher levels of pre-entrepreneurial curiosity lead to higher levels of entrepreneurial curiosity. Conclusions: The contribution of this study is manifold. From the theoretical view, a literature gap on the field of optimism and entrepreneurial curiosity combined is fulfilled and a structural equation model with optimism and entrepreneurial curiosity was established. Since openness, pre-entrepreneurial curiosity and entrepreneurial curiosity are related policy makers can test individuals according to their level of researched determinants and motivate more entrepreneurial perspective ones to become active in the entrepreneurship process. Thus, entrepreneurs can use these results to recruit more entrepreneurial oriented employees.

Shaping of competencies of managers in academic incubators of entrepreneurship in Poland
Joanna Kurowska-Pysz, 2014, izvirni znanstveni članek

Opis: Background and purpose: Participation of future entrepreneurs in Academic Incubators of Entrepreneurship (AIE) in Poland is one of the innovative paths to shape their managerial competences. The aim of the paper is to analyse and evaluate the activities of the AIEs as an environment inside of which managerial competencies are formed, and formulate recommendations concerning the improvement of AIEs, in terms of the development of managerial skills of future entrepreneurs. Design/methodology/approach: The author relied on research - study surveys and empirical, qualitative, exploratory research, which were supported by figures. The author focused on four important issues: - Motives of researchers and students interested in the support of AIE; - The quality of support offered by the incubator to its participants as well as the frequency of use of this support by future entrepreneurs; - The possibility of extending the support system for AIE participants; - Traits / managerial and entrepreneurial competences desired in people running their own businesses. Results: AIE participants are focused primarily on implementing their business ventures and to a much lesser extent, care about the simultaneous development of their managerial competencies to manage these projects. It is manifested, among other by differentiated assessment of the suitability of certain forms of support from the incubator and the low intensity of use of this support. Despite this, AIE participants perceive the development of desirable traits and strengthening of specific entrepreneurial, management competencies. It is not a very dynamic growth, although it translates into their motivation to start a business after leaving the incubator. Conclusion: It is recommended to place greater emphasis on mobilizing the future entrepreneurs to make use of forms of support for the development of their managerial competences. It is necessary for complex preparation of future entrepreneurs to independently conduct business after leaving the incubator

Organizational ambidexterity, exploration, exploitation and firms innovation performance
Mladenka Popadić, Matej Černe, Ines Milohnić, 2015, izvirni znanstveni članek

Opis: Background and Purpose: The construct of organizational ambidexterity (OA) has attracted the growing attention in management research. Previous empirical research has investigated the effect of organisational ambidexterity on performance from various perspectives. This study aims to resolve the contradictory previous research findings on the relationship between organisational ambidexterity and innovation performance. We unpack this construct with combined dimension of ambidexterity, which relates to a combination of high levels of both exploration and exploitation (introduction of products or services that were new to the market and new to the firm). Methodology: We frame our ambidexterity hypothesis in terms of firm’s innovation orientation. The hypothesis is tested by using Community Innovation Survey (CIS) 2006 micro data at the organizational level in twelve countries. To operationalize an ambidexterity and firms innovation outcome, we used self-reported measures of innovativeness. Results: To test our hypothesis, we developed a set of models and tested them with multiple hierarchical linear regression analyses. The results indicate that exploration and exploitation are positively related to firm’s innovation performances which supports our assumption that both are complementary. Furthermore, we find that above and over their independent effects, through combining them into a single construct of organizational ambidexterity, this variable remains negatively and significantly related to innovation performance. Conclusion: These results provides the managers with an idea of when managing trade-offs between exploration and exploitation would be more favorable versus detrimental. For firms with lower organizational ambidexterity, the relationship between exploration-exploitation and the firm’s innovation performance is a more positive one.
