Mass customization in practice : strategic implementation and insights from Polish small and medium sized enterprises
J. Patalas-Maliszewska, K. Kowalczewska, G. Pajak, 2025, izvirni znanstveni članek

Opis: Implementing a mass customization (MC) strategy in manufacturing enterprises presents an ongoing challenge for both managers and researchers. To remain competitive, managers must consider adopting advanced technologies associated with Industry 4.0 and 5.0 (I4.0/5.0). This study seeks to identify solutions that support strategic decision-making aimed at enhancing the level of MC implementation. The paper begins with a literature review focused on the adoption of MC strategies within European manufacturing enterprises. It then presents findings from a questionnaire-based survey conducted among more than 100 small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in Poland’s automotive sector. Statistical analysis, including correlation coefficients, was used to evaluate the data. The results indicate that consumer participation in the product design process is the key driver of successful MC strategy implementation in the surveyed SMEs. Furthermore, managers recognized strong correlations between the adoption of I4.0/5.0 technologies—such as automated machinery and real-time data usage—and higher levels of MC capability. The benefits of implementing MC strategies, including increased production flexibility and waste reduction, were also highlighted. The findings offer general insights applicable to SMEs in the automotive industry.

Ayşe Meriç Yazıcı, Mesut Öztirak, 2023, izvirni znanstveni članek

Opis: Background and purpose: This study aims to reveal the mediating role of organisational culture in the relationship between charismatic leadership and corporate reputation. Methodology: The universe of the study consists of health sector workers working in Istanbul. The analysis of the data obtained from the survey application of the data collected from 405 employees in the five-point Likert scale was carried out with SPSS 26.0 program, and a 95% confidence level was studied. Frequency and percentage statistics for categorical variables, mean, standard deviation and minimum and maximum statistics for numerical variables are given. In the study, the mediation model was tested with Proces Hayes Regression. Non-hierarchical clustering was used to divide the sample into groups using scale scores, and the Chi-square test was used to relate demographic characteristics with the determined groups. Results: According to the analysis results, it was concluded that organisational culture has a mediating role in the effect of charismatic leadership on corporate reputation. The results of the mediation role model are mediated by organisational culture in the effect of charismatic leadership on corporate reputation. According to the clustering analysis results, corporate reputation, charismatic leadership, and organisational culture scores are statistically significant variables for clustering. Conclusion: Together with these results, it is thought that drawing attention to the charismatic leadership behaviours in the health sector and arranging the organisational culture in a way to adapts to it positively affect the corporate reputation perception of the enterprises in line with the proposed solutions and attracts attention will make a positive contribution for both employees and individuals who will prefer health enterprises.

Exploring digital transformation journey among micro, small-, and medium-sized enterprises
Marjeta Marolt, Gregor Lenart, Mirjana Kljajić Borštnar, Andreja Pucihar, 2025, izvirni znanstveni članek

Opis: This paper aims to explore the patterns in micro, small-, and medium-sized enterprises’ (MSMEs) digital transformation journey during recent years. Using an emergent concurrent mixed-methods approach, we combined insights from six in-depth interviews with MSME managers and owners with survey data from 66 MSMEs. The findings reveal major inhibitors and accelerators of MSMEs’ digital transformation and demonstrate how they cope with them by engaging in digitalisation actions. This study also provides insights into how inhibitors, accelerators, and digitalisation actions vary across MSME sizes. While an increased adoption of digital technology was observed among the participating MSMEs, this study identifies three distinct digital transformation paths: necessary, experimental, and committed. Each path is shaped by a unique combination of inhibitors and accelerators. From the practical perspective, this research provides insights for MSME managers and owners on how to tailor their digital transformation efforts to their unique inhibitors and accelerators. In addition, our insights can help policy makers to promote the digital transformation of MSMEs through appropriate measures and support mechanisms tailored to the specific needs of smaller enterprises.

Perspectives on corporate governance in state-owned enterprises : evidence from Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia and Serbia
Emir Sudžuka, Dženan Kulović, Jelena Nikolić, 2025, izvirni znanstveni članek

Opis: This paper examines the key aspects of corporate governance of state-owned enterprises (SOEs) through a comparative survey conducted in Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia, and Serbia. The research explores two distinct perspectives: the state's view on the necessity and governance of SOEs, and the perspective of SOE boards on operational and strategic challenges. From the state’s perspective, the survey addresses issues such as the protection of national economic interests, state ownership in key industries, equitable service provision, and the reinvestment of SOE profits into public projects. Findings suggest a strong alignment among respondents across all three countries, supporting the idea that state ownership ensures economic sovereignty and guarantees fair access to essential services. On the other hand, the board perspective highlights concern about the bureaucratic barriers faced by SOEs, the influence of political interference on financial performance, and the limitations of public ownership in enhancing global competitiveness. Board respondents expressed the need for greater autonomy in decision-making and stressed the importance of partnerships with the private sector to optimise SOE efficiency and market position. The article synthesises these findings to address the broader question: Are SOEs essential in modern economies, or do they require reform to meet contemporary challenges? The results indicate that while SOEs hold strategic importance, reforms focused on reducing bureaucracy, enhancing governance, and promoting public-private partnerships are crucial for their future viability.

Ethical leadership and management of small- and medium-sized enterprises : the role of AI in decision making
Tjaša Štrukelj, Petya Dankova, 2025, izvirni znanstveni članek

Opis: The integration of artificial intelligence (AI) within the decision-making processes of small- and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) presents both significant opportunities and substan- tial ethical challenges. The aim of this paper is to provide a theoretical model depicting the interdependence of organisational decision-making levels and decision-making styles, with an emphasis on exploring the role of AI in organisations’ decision making, based on selected process dimension of the MER model of integral governance and management, particularly in relation to routine, analytical, and intuitive decision-making capabilities. The research methodology employs a comprehensive qualitative analysis of the scientific literature published between 2010 and 2024, focusing on AI implementation in SMEs, ethi- cal decision making in integral management, and regulatory frameworks governing AI use in business contexts. The findings reveal that AI technologies influence decision making across business policy, strategic, tactical, and operative management levels, with distinct implications for intuitive, analytical, and routine decision-making approaches. The analysis demonstrates that while AI can enhance data processing capabilities and reduce human biases, it presents significant challenges for normative–ethical decision making, requiring human judgment and stakeholder consideration. We conclude that effective AI integration in SMEs requires a balanced approach where AI primarily serves as a tool for data collection and analysis rather than as an autonomous decision maker. These insights contribute to the discourse on responsible AI implementation in SMEs and provide practical guidance for leaders navigating the complex interplay between (non)technological capabilities, ethical considerations, and regulatory requirements in the evolving business landscape.

Sustainable business practices and the role of digital technologies : a cross-regional analysis
Samuel Plečko, Barbara Bradač Hojnik, 2024, izvirni znanstveni članek

Opis: This study examines the relationship between digital transformation and sustainable practices within enterprises against the backdrop of global transformative forces framed within the holistic paradigm of systems thinking. It examines the extent to which digital advances either facilitate or impede the sustainable development of companies, while also considering the systemic impact of demographic variables (such as gender, age, education), national income levels, and geographical regions on business sustainability. Using data from the Global Entrepreneurship Monitor (GEM), which encompasses 26,790 entrepreneurs in 47 countries, this research uses multinomial regression to assess how these factors influence companies’ commitment to social and environmental goals. A key finding is that the strategic use of digital technologies in sales processes significantly increases the likelihood that entrepreneurs will integrate social and environmental considerations into their decision-making. Notably, this conscientious approach to business is most prevalent among entrepreneurs in Latin America and the Caribbean. Our findings underscore the central role of digital technologies in driving sustainable business transformation while also highlighting the significant influence of regional socio-environmental contexts on business sustainability orientations.

Statistically significant differences in AI support levels for project management between SMEs and large enterprises
Polona Tominc, Dijana Oreški, Vesna Čančer, Maja Rožman, 2024, izvirni znanstveni članek

Opis: Background: This article delves into an in-depth analysis of the statistically significant differences in AI support levels for project management between SMEs and large enterprises. The research was conducted based on a comprehensive survey encompassing a sample of 473 SMEs and large Slovenian enterprises. Methods: To validate the observed differences, statistical analysis, specifically the Mann–Whitney U test, was employed. Results: The results confirm the presence of statistically significant differences between SMEs and large enterprises across multiple dimensions of AI support in project management. Large enterprises exhibit on average a higher level of AI adoption across all five AI utilization dimensions. Specifically, large enterprises scored significantly higher (p < 0.05) in AI adopting strategies and in adopting AI technologies for project tasks and team creation. This study’s findings also underscored the significant differences (p < 0.05) between SMEs and large enterprises in their adoption and utilization of AI technologies for project management purposes. While large enterprises scored above 4 for several dimensions, with the highest average score assessed (mean value 4.46 on 1 to 5 scale) for the usage of predictive Analytics Tools to improve the work on the project, SMEs’ average levels, on the other hand, were all below 4. SMEs in particular may lag in incorporating AI into various project activities due to several factors such as resource constraints, limited access to AI expertise, or risk aversion. Conclusions: The results underscore the need for targeted strategies to enhance AI adoption in SMEs and leverage its benefits for successful project implementation and strengthen the company’s competitiveness.

Exploring social customer relationship management adoption in micro, small and medium-sized enterprises
Marjeta Marolt, Hans Dieter Zimmermann, Anja Žnidaršič, Andreja Pucihar, 2019, izvirni znanstveni članek

Opis: With the emergence of social media, customer relationship management has undergone noticeable changes and gained a great deal of attention from researchers and practitioners in recent years. In this paper, we provide additional insights into how intensively business-to-customer micro, small and medium-sized enterprises adopt social customer relationship management. Based on the literature review and insights from interviews with six micro, small and medium-sized enterprise owners/managers, we developed a conceptual research model that integrates the antecedents, intensity of social customer relationship management adoption, and performance outcomes. For the intensity of social customer relationship management adoption, we applied process-based conceptualization consisting of the customer engagement process and customer data management process. Then we empirically tested a conceptual research model by using data collected in a survey of 119 micro, small and medium-sized enterprises in Slovenia. We found that not all antecedents are equally relevant to both processes of the intensity of social customer relationship management adoption. Additionally, we found that the intensity of social customer relationship management adoption has a positive effect on customer relationship performance. Based on these findings, we provide recommendations for further research and offer practical implications for micro, small and medium-sized enterprises considering social customer relationship management adoption.

Opis: In recent years, small and medium enterprises worldwide have increasingly adopted digital technologies and cloud computing. The pace of this digital transition has varied across countries, and the socioeconomic conditions during the pandemic have further accelerated the digitalization of enterprises. This situation calls for an examination of the reasons, benefits, and risks associated with enterprises adopting cloud computing in different settings. Our study aimed to collect longitudinal data from 71 Montenegrin micro, small, and medium enterprises. We conducted a repeated measurement study with two measurement periods: 2017 and 2023. The quantitative results were analyzed alongside qualitative data from a semi-structured interview (N = 15) conducted in 2023. The findings revealed substantial shifts in SME attitudes towards cloud computing, highlighting key catalysts and influencing factors such as security, technological accessibility, external expertise, effort expectations, privacy, social influence, perceived security and safety, ease of use, and usefulness. These factors were examined in the context of global digital innovation, the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, and recent cyberattacks that disrupted national e-services in Montenegro for 3–9 months. The findings provide new insights into how enterprises can become more prepared to effectively use cloud computing.
