Particulate matter air pollution in the Republic of Slovenia and its national spatial emissions release
Petra Dolšak Lavrič, Maja Ivanovski, Darko Goričanec, Danijela Urbancl, 2023, izvirni znanstveni članek

Opis: In this work, an impact of particulate matter (PM) on air pollution and its emissions released is investigated. Concentration levels of PM10 and PM2.5 in the Republic of Slovenia (RS) were analyzed on daily, weekly, monthly, quartile, and annual data and then compared. The study was conducted from January 1, 2020 to December 31, 2020 at two monitoring stations, so-called urban traffic and urban industrial. Obtained results showed that the highest concentrations of PM in air were during the cold months of the year when the temperatures are lower (< 6%). Results from heating seasons (from October 1, 2019 and March 31, 2020 and from October 1, 2020 to March 31, 2021) showed the highest concentration levels of PM10 between 9:00 and 14:00 and between 18:00 and 22:00, with highest concentrations recorded during the winter months (January and February). Additionally, emission building inventory was built based on PM10 and PM2.5 emissions released. The study includes yearly spatial building emissions release model considering currently installed high PM emitted stoves. The building model for the Republic of Slovenia has been developed by using 500 x 500 m model grid. Obtained results showed that changing currently low efficient appliance with advanced appliance would result in significant lower PM emissions released from building sector

The Evaluation of Torrefaction Efficiency for Lignocellulosic Materials Combined with Mixed Solid Wastes
Maja Ivanovski, Darko Goričanec, Danijela Urbancl, 2023, izvirni znanstveni članek

Opis: The paper presents the results of research aimed at evaluating the possibility of using selected biomass wastes to produce solid biofuels. In this work, the thermochemical properties of two lignocellulosic biomasses, namely, miscantshus (Miscanthus × Giganteus) and hops (Humulus lupulus), and non-lignocellulosic biomass, namely, municipal solid waste, and their mixtures (micanthus + municipal solid waste and hops + municipal solid waste) were studied using the torrefaction process as the main method for investigation. The effects of various torrefaction temperatures (250, 300, and 350 °C) and times (30 and 60 min) were evaluated. Proximate and ultimate analyses were performed on the torrefied samples. The following can be stated: as the torrefaction temperature and time increased, mass and energy yields decreased while the higher heating values (HHVs) and fuel ratios (FRs) increased, together with carbon contents (C). In addition, energy on return investment (EROI) was studied; the maximum EROI of 28 was achieved for MSW biochar at 250 °C for 30 min. The results of studying greenhouse gas emissions (GHGs) showed a reduction of around 88% when using torrefied biochar as a substitute for coal. In sum, this study shows that torrefaction pre-treatment can improve the physicochemical properties of raw biomasses to a level comparable with coal, and could be helpful in better understanding the conversion of those biomasses into a valuable, solid biofuel.

A study of particulate and gase-ous emissions of a damaged tubu-lar combustion chamber in a pellet stove
Zdravko Praunseis, 2021, izvirni znanstveni članek

Opis: Wood-burning boilers are a popular source of heating in Slovenia. However, there has been much debate about the potential negative health effects associated with wood smoke in recent years. Wood smoke is increasingly seen as a significant component of airborne particulate matter (PM), especially in the context of the new sort time standard for fine particles in ambient air. Most organic substances will be burnt in the boilers during good combustion conditions with sufficient oxygen supply and high temperature. This study presents the influence of damaged tubular combustion chamber on smoke fine-particle emissions at small scale pellet burners. This research aims to reduce the particulate matter emissions of small scale pellet boilers and contribute to cleaner air.

Policies for promotion of electric vehicles and factors influencing consumers' purchasing decisions of low emission vehicles
Matjaž Knez, Matevž Obrecht, 2017, izvirni znanstveni članek

Opis: Recently different studies of green transport have become interesting for policy makers, car manufacturers, customers and energy suppliers. Many stakeholders from the public and private sectors are investing a lot of effort to identify consumer behaviour for future improvements in development of green products and effective strategies, which could accelerate the transition to sustainable future. This paper presents the effects of electric vehicle promotional policies and customer preferences about alternative fuel vehicles. This study has shown that the electric vehicle promotional policies adopted in Slovenia have been unsuccessful, as the share of first-time registered electric vehicles in 2013 was below 1%. For different segments of people whose opinions about low emission vehicles differ, different measures must be adopted. When designing promotional policies focus must be on the most relevant factors such as the total vehicle price and fuel economy.

Solar energised transport solution and customer preferences and opinions about alternative fuel vehicles : the case of Slovenia
Matjaž Knez, Marjan Sternad, 2015, izvirni znanstveni članek

Opis: Authorities in Slovenia and other EU member states are confronted with problems of city transportation. Fossil-fuel based transport poses two chief problems - local and global pollution, and dwindling supplies and ever increasing costs. An elegant solution is to gradually replace the present automobile fleet with low emission vehicles. This article first explores the economics and practical viability of the provision of solar electricity for the charging of electric vehicles by installation of economical available PV modules and secondly the customer preferences and opinions about alternative low emission vehicles. Present estimates indicate that for the prevailing solar climate of Celje - a medium-sized Slovenian town - the cost would be only 2.11 EUR cents/kWh of generated solar electricity. Other results have also revealed that the most relevant factor for purchasing low emission vehicle is total vehicle price.

Experimental investigation review of biodiesel usage in bus diesel engine
Breda Kegl, Marko Kegl, 2017, izvirni znanstveni članek

Opis: This paper assembles and analyses extensive experimental research work conducted for several years in relation to biodiesel usage in a MAN bus Diesel engine with M injection system. At first the most important properties of the actually used neat rapeseed biodiesel fuel and its blends with mineral diesel are discussed and compared to that of mineral diesel. Then the injection, fuel spray, and engine characteristics for various considered fuel blends are compared at various ambient conditions, with special emphasis on the influence of low temperature on fueling. Furthermore, for each tested fuel the optimal injection pump timing is determined. The obtained optimal injection pump timings for individual fuels are then used to determine and discuss the most important injection and combustion characteristics, engine performance, as well as the emission, economy, and tribology characteristics of the engine at all modes of emission test cycles test. The results show that for each tested fuel it is possible to find the optimized injection pump timing, which enables acceptable engine characteristics at all modes of the emission test cycles test.

Acoustic emission detection of macro-cracks on engraving tool steel inserts during the injection molding cycle using PZT sensors
Rajko Svečko, Dragan Kusić, Tomaž Kek, Andrej Sarjaš, Aleš Hančič, Janez Grum, 2013, izvirni znanstveni članek

Opis: This paper presents an improved monitoring system for the failure detection ofen graving tool steel inserts during the injection molding cycle. This system uses acoustic emission PZT sensors mounted through acoustic waveguides on the engraving insert. We were thus able to clearly distinguish the defect through measured AE signals. Two engraving tool steel inserts were tested during the production of standard test specimens, each under the same processing conditions. By closely comparing the captured AE signals on both engraving inserts during the filling and packing stages, we were able to detect the presence of macro-cracks on one engraving insert. Gabor wavelet analysis was used for closer examination of the captured AE signalsć peak amplitudes during the filling and packing stages. The obtained results revealed that such a system could be used successfully as an improved tool for monitoring the integrity of an injection molding process.
