Some aspects of teaching media literacy to pre-school children in Slovenia from a perception standpoint of teachers and parents

Opis: This paper deals with media literacy as a multidimensional skill that parents and teachers possess. In this context we warn of the media-technical aspect of this skill and, within this aspect, of parents' and teachers' opinion on the presence of media in children's lives. Following that, the paper explores teachers' media-didactic competence as a component of educators' media literacy. In the empiric part we used two aspects of fostering media literacy. One is the media-technical competence of parents and educators, while the other is the media-didactic competence of educators. We found that both parents and teachers believe that media have a strong presence in everyday lives of pre-school children and that they play an important role in teaching pre-school children. Teachers are aware of the importance of early teaching with media, for media and about media with the purpose of developing children's media literacy, so they will not be afraid of media when they grow up.

Opis: In maximizing the effect of emerging technologies pre-service teachers should receive assistance in building complex knowledge of how to meaningfully integrate content, pedagogy and technology into the construct of Technological Pedagogical Content Knowledge (PCTK). Teaching by design was found to be a promising strategy in order to support prospective teachers in finding ways to introduce hands-on and mind-on computer-supported activities into their teaching practice.

Development of ICT competences in the environmental studies subject in Slovenia

Opis: Digital literacy is one of eight key competences that were defined by the European Parliament and Council as those that member states should develop as a part of their strategies for lifelong learning (Official Journal of the European Union, 2006, p.11). It would contribute to a more successful life in a knowledge society. The purpose of this paper is to Npresent the results of empirical research on the use of ICT in the lessons of the environmental studies subject in the first triennium of primary schools in the Republic of Slovenia. Data were collected through a questionnaire and according to the protocol. We found that among all of the ICT tools, teachers mostly use the computer. The majority of the teachers use the computer once a week, most often in mathematics and environmental studies subject. In the observed lessons of the environmental studies subject, less than half of teachers use the computer in the lessons. This was followed by the use of computer and the LCD projector, and the interactive whiteboard. Among the obstacles that teachers indicate when they try to include ICT in the learning process are insufficient, out of date equipment, lack of time and lack of their own competence.

Information and communication technologies (ICT) in biology teaching in Slovenian secondary schools

Opis: About two-thirds of Slovene secondary schools received computers equipped with dataloggers and sensors to be used in teaching Physics, Chemistry and Biology. Later it was recognized that only a couple of Biology teachers were using the donated equipment in their classrooms or laboratories. The questionnaire, intended to investigate the situation, was posted to schools which had received a donation. Based on the answers, it was possible to assign computer applications from one of the three groups. In the first group were these applications (word processing, e-mail and internet use) towards which teachers have positive attitudes and that they do use for school work. The common element is that teachers can work at home and then use the materials in the classroom. In the second group were applications (presentations, use of data loggers, computer programmes and virtual laboratory) towards which attitudes are positive, but which teachers do not use because of the overloaded curriculum, lack of equipment, and inappropriate training. In the third group are applications (computer games and programming), about which attitudes are negative and which teachers do not use. The introduction of such applications into teaching is at the moment far from realistic.

Lower secondary school students' attitudes toward computer-supported laboratory exercises

Opis: In Science teaching laboratory work is recognized as one of the cornerstones. In school science laboratory work computers can be used as computer supported laboratory (real) and as virtual laboratory. In the first case "real" laboratories involve bench top experiments utilizing data acquisition systems while "virtual" laboratory entails interactive simulations and animations. Lower secondary school students in age between 11 and 15 performed three laboratory exercises (Activity of yeast, Gas exchange in breathing, Heart rate) as classic, computer-supported and virtual laboratory. As a result of testing we know that all three methods are suitable even for younger students. When they were asked which method they liked the most, their first choice was computer-supported laboratory, followed by classic laboratory, and virtual laboratory at the end. Additionally recognized weak and strong sides of used methods are discussed.

Knowlege of, attitudes toward, and acceptance of genetically modified organisms among prospective teachers of biology, home economics, and grade school in Slovenia

Opis: The objective of this study was to investigate knowledge, opinions, and attitudes toward, as well as readiness to accept genetically modified organisms (GMOs) among prospective primary and secondary Slovene teachers. Our findings are that prospective teachers want to take an active role in rejecting or supporting individual GMOs and are aware of the importance of education about genetically modified organism (GMO) items and their potential significance for society. Through cluster analysis, we recognized four clusters of GMOs, separated by degree of genetically modified acceptability. GM plants and microorganisms which are recognized as useful are accepted. They are undecided about organisms used in research or medicine and reject organisms used for food consumption and for fun. There are only weak correlations between knowledge and attitudes and knowledge and acceptance of GMOs, and a strong correlation between attitudes and acceptance. The appropriate strategies and actions for improving university courses in biotechnology are discussed.

Useful measures in the field of time and dimensional rationalisation of manual training lessons

Opis: Schoolwork, especially lessons in manual skills is often associated with various ergonomics stresses. These stresses are the result not only of school obligations but also of the physical working environment and inadequate lesson planning. Much can be done in this field if certain approaches are taken into consideration at the work planning stage. Thus we can use certain analytical methods, such as the Method of Temporary Observations (Multi-Moment Method) and OWAS (a method for the evaluation of postural load during work), when positioning stressful lesson factors. This can be done in arelatively simple way in the field of time rationalisation as well as in the field of dimensional work adjustment to pupils. Research results in this papershow that by using a planned directed approach in this field, it is possible to achieve, a higher level of efficiency with normal levels of fatigue.

Methodology of evaluation and monitoring teacher - mentor and teacher - trainee

Opis: In Slovenia new teachers are required to complete a ten-month probationary period in a school. In this period they are supervised by a teacher-mentor, who does not have any detailed documentation on how to supervise the probation teachers. The research we have done investigated how teacher-mentors evaluated their own mentoring experiences. The study involvedd 160 teachers and 77 headmasters from Slovenian schools. The data received from the questionnaire was analyzed quantitatively. We found out that the teacher probationary period is suitable. Teachers are satisfied with their menthorship role, because it is a challenge for them and they can gain new knowledge. A lot of teachers think that they would need an additional qualifi cation and an additional material for their work with the probation teachers. Teacher mentors are not enough qualified for their mentors work, therefore they need support in workshops with examples of good practice and detailed guidelines for their work.

The comparison between the behavioural and constructivist learning and teaching

Opis: The difference between the behaviouristic and constructivist approach to learning and teaching originates from different notions of knowledge. Currently in Slovenia the behaviouristic approach dominates as it is present in the whole educational system and teachers are more familiar with it. Those teachers who have different notions of knowledge are introducing a changed approach to learning and teaching that follows from the constructivist paradigm. Both are facing dilemmas that concern teachers in practice more than they do initiators of changes who do not work directly in practice. The consequences of the introduction of changes include different notions of evaluation, examination and assessment. From a didactic point of view the role of feedback changes as it is transferred from assessment to examination. From a student's perspective, it is not the role of feedback that is essential but its meaning.
