Design, Characterisation and Applications of Cellulose-Based Thin Films, Nanofibers and 3D Printed Structures

Opis: The introduction of the Laboratory Manual gives the theoretical bases on cellulose and its derivatives, which are used as starting polymers for the preparation of multifunctional polymers with three different advanced techniques - spin coating, electrospinning and 3D printing. In the following, each technique is presented in a separate Lab Exercise. Each exercise covers the theoretical basics on techniques for polymer processing and methods for their characterisation, with an emphasis on the application of prepared materials. The experimental sections contain all the necessary information needed to implement the exercises, while the added results provide students with the help to implement correct and successful exercises and interpret the results.

1st International FibreNet Science for the Public Day

Teaching vocabulary items related to the field of nursing at the secondary level

Opis: In the following MA thesis professional language is presented in detail. Professional language is based on general one and characterized by technical terminology. It is an essential part of the lessons in vocational programmes, as it forms the basis for students’ future profession. According to the curriculum, a part of English lessons (English as a foreign language) in vocational programmes should be dedicated to professional language in order to prepare students for their career paths/professional activities throughout Europe. To gain as good learning outcomes as possible, it is of great importance that foreign language teachers integrate professional language into the lessons gradually and in cooperation with teachers of vocation specific subjects. Teachers plan professional foreign language lessons in accordance with the curriculum, while taking into account the needs and wishes of their students. In this way, they aim at efficient and successful learning and at the same time exercise one of the key guiding principles of successful teaching and learning – learner-centred teaching. Choosing appropriate vocabulary is of key importance, as well as giving clear, short explanations of new or unknown vocabulary items that are accompanied by examples of their use and, if needed, also by translations/mother tongue equivalents. Teachers should inform students of different learning strategies that facilitate their learning or acquiring new vocabulary. They should also decide on appropriate teaching methods that motivate students and contribute to their independent learning, as well as teaching/learning materials. As learning foreign languages usually starts with reading, its main features are presented in the MA thesis, focusing on reading professional foreign language texts. In the empirical part our research into the importance of learning professional language in foreign language classes is presented. The survey was carried out among third year students of the nursing school. The findings shows how important they consider learning a professional foreign language, how motivated they are for learning it, and if professional language test results were better compared to all the other foreign language tests.

The Use of Authentic Songs in 2nd and 3rd Grade of Primary School

Opis: Children learn languages differently from adults. They learn more spontaneously and naturally. Most students in Slovenia begin learning English as their first foreign language in the second grade of primary school at the latest. Teachers have to use age appropriate materials and methods. Authentic songs are materials that introduce the language of native speakers. The thesis focuses on the use of authentic songs in the 2nd and 3rd grade of primary school. The theoretical part contains the reasons, the criteria for the choice of songs and the ways to use them in class. It lists the advantages and disadvantages of authentic materials and suggests how to prepare authentic materials for the use in the classroom. The empirical part presents examples of the classroom use of the songs "Here We Go Round the Mulberry Bush", "Wind the Bobbin Up", "Rain, Rain, Go Away", "The Big Ship Sails", "Ring Around the Rosie" and "Hickory Dickory Dock". The songs have very interesting origins and can set the basis for the introduction of various themes that are included in the English syllabus for the 2nd and 3rd grade of primary school.

Constitutive modeling and computer methods in geotechnical engineering

Opis: Computer methods are in the forefront of the procedures for analysis and design for geotechnical problems. Constitutive models that characterize the behavior of geologic materials and interfaces/joints play a vital role in the solutions obtained by using computer methods or any other solution procedure. The literature on both constitutive and computer models is wide; attention in this paper is devoted to the disturbed state concept (DSC) for constitutive modeling and the finite element method for computer solutions. The disturbed state concept, a unified and hierarchical approach, provides a unified framework for characterization of the behavior of geologic materials and interfaces/joints. Important factors such as elastic, plastic and creep responses, stress paths, volume change (contraction and dilation), disturbance (softening and damage or stiffening), thermal effects, partial saturation and liquefaction can be included in the same DSC framework. Because of its hierarchical nature, simplified models for specific applications can be derived from the DSC. It has been applied successfully for defining behavior of many geologic materials and interfaces/joints. Procedures for the determination of parameters for the DSC models based on laboratory tests have been developed. Various models from the DSC have been validated at the specimen level with respect to laboratory test data. They have been validated at the practical boundary value problem level by comparing observed behavior in the field and/or simulated problems in the laboratory with predictions using computer (finite element) procedures in which DSC has been implemented; these have been presented in various publications by Desai and coworkers, and are listed in the References. Three typical examples of such validations at the practical problem level are included in this paper. It is believed that the DSC can provide unified and powerful models for a wide range of geomechanical and other engineering materials, and interfaces/joints.

Interactive e-learning materials in the mathematics classroom in Slovenia

Opis: This article presents the current development of e-learning in Slovenia, with an emphasis on the domestic E-um web portal (URL: www.e-um.si) for teaching mathematics in primary and secondary schools. Based on findings from recent scientific research, the strengths and weaknesses of e-learning materials in education, particularly in mathematics classes, are analyzed. We are particularly interested in the advantages and disadvantages of interactive e-learning materials in comparison to traditional learning materials as well as in the quality of the E-um web portal in comparison to similar educational web portals at home and abroad. Theoretical findings are tightly interwoven with examples of teaching practice using the E-um interactive materials.

E-learning materials for social science students

Opis: Today's student population is rightfully categorized as digital natives. From the beginning of their education, they used ICT. The technological gadgets, internet, and social networks are like a glove to them. Such generation of students require more than just textbooks. In the 2013 University of Maribor establish a task force for e-learning materials development. The goal was to identify the optimal technological, didactical and financial approach to the long process of e-learning materials development. Members of the task force have many workshops presenting different views, acquired experiences from their previous projects, technological constraints, prediction, etc. During these workshops it was decided it would be the best to prepare different types of e-learning materials and test them by the students. From their feedbacks we could set the guidelines for large scale production. At the Faculty of Arts, Faculty of Natural Sciences and Mathematics and Faculty of Education students needs to acquire also the digital competences to become successful teachers. For special didactics study programs different types of e-learning materials were produced with different technological approach. The concept was to upgrade the previous deliverables (PowerPoint slides) and narrate them. Narrated slides would enable students to refresh their lectures and should be used as blended e-learning materials. Narrations were prepared in different format: textual narration, voice narration and video narration. But later it was decided that these types are not enough and a mix of narratives (integrated multimedia learning materials) could be used on individual slides depending on the content of the slide. Students first receive the lecture in the classroom and in the same week they need to study associated e-learning materials and write their review of corresponding e-learning materials. In their review students were required to log the required time for studying the e-learning materials; benefits and drawbacks; potential improvement of e-learning materials; and open text of impression of using e-learning materials. Effectiveness and outcomes were tested with the electronic quizzes. Students were highly motivated with these new types of learning materials and provide us valuable feedback. Most efficient were text narrated learning materials, but the favourite was integrated multimedia learning materials. Video and audio narrations take them more time to study since they were constrained with the speed of speech of the recorded lecturer.

HEAT TRANSFER IN UNIPORE CELLULAR STRUCTURE

Opis: This master’s thesis deals with heat transfer in a specific cellular structure, called UniPore cellular structure. Said structure has been developed at Japan’s Kumamoto university. The structure is manufactured using the technique of explosion welding. Due to longitudinal orientation of the pores and high thermal conductivity of materials, the thermal properties of the structure as a heat exchanger have been analysed. Influence of different boundary conditions on the effectiveness of heat transfer in the structure has been analysed. The results are compared and analysed. It has been concluded, that the structure itself might be suitable when dealing with dirty liquids. Usage of the structure in such systems would enable a quick and efficient cleaning process of the waste, that deposits on the walls over time.

Dependence of warm or cold feeling and heat retention ability of knitwear from digital print parameters

Opis: Textile materials are increasingly being subjected to the process of printing. The printing process with its parameters significantly affects the properties of textile materials and clothes made from these materials. This paper examines the effect of the parameters of digital printing on thermo-physiological characteristics of printed textile materials. As the essential print parameters were selected tone value and a different number of passes. In this research were used knitted fabric materials of 100% cotton fibers (100% CO), 100% polyester fibers (100% PES) and their mixture (50%CO/50% PES). The influence of print parameters to thermo-physiological properties of the material is evaluated through a warm or cold feeling and heat retention ability. Results of the research demonstrated that, in addition to material composition, the printing process with its parameters have a significant influence on the thermo-physiological characteristics of textile materials.
