Influence of enzymatic pretreatment on colour of bleached and dyed flax fibres

Opis: In this paper the effect of enzymatic bioscouring on the bleaching and dyeing of flax fibres was studied in comparison with conventional alkaline scouring. Enzymatic bioscouring was performed with a commercial multi-enzyme system consisting of pectinases, hemicellulases and cellulases. The enzyme and alkaline scoured flax fibres were subsequently oxidatively bleached with hydrogen peroxide and dyed with direct dye C.I. Direct Red 80 under the same conditions. The efficiency of both the scouring and bleaching processes was evaluated by weight loss and the whiteness of the bleached samples was determined according to CIE formula. The exhaustion profile of the used dye was followed on-line during the dyeing process using absorbance measurement. The colours of bleached and dyed samples were evaluated using CIELAB colour values. The residual pretreatment and dyeing baths were ecologically analysed with COD, TOC and BOD5. The obtained results indicate that enzymatic scouring provides a lower weight loss, a higher degree of whiteness, comparable dyeing properties and is more environmentally friendly.

The impact of ultrasonic-assisted dyeing on ecological parameters

Opis: The main contribution of our research was to compare the impact of the conventional dyeing process and the power ultrasonic technique on dye-bath exhaustion and, consequently, on dye-bath effluents during the dyeing of four dissimilar fabrics (cotton, viscose, wool and polyamide) using chemically-different dyestuffs (reactive, direct, acid and 1:1 metal complex) at two concentrations, regarding different operational parameters, in order toestimate the environmental impact of numerous parameters and dyeing systems.The efficiency of various dyeing procedures was verified by measuring on-line absorbance, followed by the calculation of exhaustion rate. After dyeing, the selected pollution parameters were monitored in dye-baths effluents, i.e. pH, total organic carbon (TOC), chemical oxygen demand (COD), and biochemical oxygen demand (BOD5). The obtained results indicated superior exhaustion of dyestuffs during ultrasound assistance in comparison to conventional dyeing, thus causing a reduction in dyeing time and energy consumption. Moreover, the selected pollution parameters were diminished in all the dye-baths effluents after ultrasonic dyeing, thus also enhancing environmental protection.

Colour of polyester thread, in regard to different dyeing procedures and dye-bathsć ph

Opis: The aim of the presented research was to investigate the impact of different dyeing procedures (conventional two-baths and one-bath) and dye-bathsć pH (acidic and alkaline) on the exhaustion of five disperse dyestuffs, differing in colour (yellow, red, blue, violet and black). The dyeing of polyester thread was carried-out at two concentrations (1 and 3%). The concentration of dye residual in dye-bath effluents were determined by absorbance measurement, followed by colourimetrical evaluation of dyed samples, and colour differencescalculation. The obtained results indicating superior dye exhaustion throughout alkaline one-bath procedure in comparison to conventional polyester dyeing that affect also on reduction of dyeing time, amount of dye-bath wastewaters, and energy consumption.

The effect of pretreatment on the environment and dyeing properties of a selected cotton knitted fabric

Opis: The current preparation of cotton knitted fabric prior to dyeing mainly involves a combined process consisting of scouring and peroxide bleaching. In this research two pre-treatment procedures, i.e. combined alkaline scouring/bleaching and enzymatic scouring/bleaching, were compared and their effects evaluated regarding environmental impact, whiteness and dyeing properties. Different pre-treated samples of cotton knitted fabrics were subsequently dyed with a chosen set of bifunctional reactive Cibacron LS dyes.The results obtained indicate that combined pre-treatment by enzymatic scouring/bleaching can be regarded as a good alternative to alkaline scouring/bleaching since it results in lower pollution of waste-water, lower SAK value after dyeing, washing and soaping, and consequently lower hydrolysation of dyestuff. Furthermore, added advantages are that it produces similar whiteness, similar dye exhaustion and, with the exception of black dyestuff, comparable dyeing results.

Different measures of sensitivity of recipe colour to random and proportional dye concentration error

Opis: A regularity of the predicted sensitivities to random and proportional dye concentration errors in regard to the position of target colour has been observed for the case of dyeing acrylic with basic dyes. The sensitivity of the recipe colour to random dye concentration errors is highest for light neutral target colours and is almost negligible for dark-shade recipes. Recipes for less saturated targets are slightly more sensitive than recipes for more saturated targets of equal lightness. The span of the sensitivities to weighing error of the recipes matching a given target varies with the position of the target in colour space. By contrast, the sensitivity of recipes to dye strength error is the highest at medium to low lightness for neutral and near neutral target shades. The span of sensitivities of the recipes for any such particular target is broad, with some having low sensitivity to strength errors. Recipes for the target colours at the "lighter" part of the gamut border were the least sensitive to strength errors.

Removal of vat and disperse dyes from residual pad liquors

Opis: The efficiency of three wastewater treatment techniques, coagulation/flocculation, adsorption and ultrafiltration, has been studied for the removal of vat and disperse dyes from residual pad liquors. Three inorganic coagulants Al2(SO4)3 18H2O, FeSO4 7H2O, FeCl3 6H2O and commercial cationic flocculant, as individuals and in combination, were tested for the coagulation/flocculation methods. Granular activated carbon was used as an adsorbent in the adsorption technique. Ultrafiltration was performed using a polyethersulfone membrane with a molecular weight cut-off of 10 kDa. Dye removal was evaluated as the difference between concentrations of dyes in pad liquors before and after a particular treatment using absorbance measurements.The obtained results indicated over 90% of dye removal using appropriate coagulants and only 40% using activated carbon. The best results, dye removal over 98%, were achieved using the ultrafiltration technique.

Ecological alternatives to the reduction and oxidation processes in dyeing with vat and sulphur dyes

Opis: This article gives a summary of the most commonly used ecologically unfriendly processes for the reduction and oxidation of vat and sulphur dyes. It also describes the new alternatives that are in the development stage and could be important in the near future. Sodium dithionite as the dominant reducing agent produces large amounts of sodium sulphate, and also toxic sulphite and thiosulphate as by-products. Consequently, high amounts of hydrogen peroxide and alkali are required for the treatment of effluents, which add to the cost of the process. Attempts have been made to use organic biodegradable reducing agents, enzymes, catalytic hydrogenation, and also indirect or direct, electrochemical reductive methods that employ a redox mediator (electron-carrier). The reduction has also been carried out via the dye radical molecule or, in the case of indigo, by direct electrochemical reduction using graphite as the electrode material. Physical techniques, for example using ultrasound, magnetic fields or UV have been shown to be effective only when used to accelerate methods using classical reduction and oxidation processes. However, although these methods offer some environmental benefits, there is still no satisfactory alternative reducing and/or oxidising agent available today.

[Beta]-cyclodextrin as a retarding reagent in polyacrylonitrile dyeing

Opis: ß-Cyclodextrin was tested as a dye complexing agent - as a dye retardant in the dyeing of PAN fibres with cationic dyes. Significant improvement of colouruniformity and some improvements in colour depth were observed when PAN fibres were dyed in the presence of ß-cyclodextrin as compared to dyeing in the presence of a commercial retardant.
