Achieving Environmental sustainability through theadoption of industry 4.0 : an exploratory case study withinthe information technology industry
Mohamed El Merroun, Istvan Janos Bartók, Osama Alkhlaifat, 2024, izvirni znanstveni članek

Opis: In the present-day competitive business landscape, integrating Industry 4.0 has transitioned from a choice to a necessity for companies striving to maintain their edge. Given the automation functions of IoT, the data management and transformation capabilities of AI, and the traceability benefits provided by Blockchain, this imperative is now more evident than ever. While widespread interest in Industry 4.0 is prevalent, the uncertainties surrounding the implementation process pose notable challenges. For this reason, in this paper, we present a single case study of a firm that operates in the information technology market to showcase the implementation process and how they overcome the challenges of digital transformation. Furthermore, the effect of this implementation on environmental sustainability experienced by the company and three of its customers was discussed.

37th Bled eConference - Resilience Through Digital Innovation: Enabling the Twin Transition : June 9 – 12, 2024, Bled, Slovenia, Conference Proceedin
2024, zbornik

Opis: The Bled eConference, organised by the University of Maribor, Faculty of Organizational Sciences, has been shaping electronic interactions since 1988. The theme of the 37th conference is "Resilience through digital innovation: enabling the twin transition". The theme addresses the critical convergence of digital transformation and sustainability, in line with the European Commission’s top priorities and policy initiatives. At the conference, we aim to highlight the opportunities of digital technologies that can contribute to building organisational and societal resilience, with a focus on social and environmental goals. The papers in this conference proceedings explore a range of topics including the opportunities and challenges of the twin transition, emerging technologies, artificial intelligence and data science, decision analytics for business and societal changes, digital innovation and business models, restructured work and the future workplace, digital health, digital ethics, digital education, smart sustainable cities, digital consumers, and the digital transformation of the public sector.

Prediction of the form of a hardened metal workpiece during the straightening process
Tadej Peršak, Jernej Hernavs, Tomaž Vuherer, Aleš Belšak, Simon Klančnik, 2023, izvirni znanstveni članek

Opis: In industry, metal workpieces are often heat-treated to improve their mechanical properties, which leads to unwanted deformations and changes in their geometry. Due to their high hardness (60 HRC or more), conventional bending and rolling straightening approaches are not effective, as a failure of the material occurs. The aim of the research was to develop a predictive model that predicts the change in the form of a hardened workpiece as a function of the arbitrary set of strikes that deform the surface plastically. A large-scale laboratory experiment was carried out in which a database of 3063 samples was prepared, based on the controlled application of plastic deformations on the surface of the workpiece and high-resolution capture of the workpiece geometry. The different types of input data, describing, on the one hand, the performed plastic surface deformations on the workpieces, and on the other hand the point cloud of the workpiece geometry, were combined appropriately into a form that is a suitable input for a U-Net convolutional neural network. The U-Net model’s performance was investigated using three statistical indicators. These indicators were: relative absolute error (RAE), root mean squared error (RMSE), and relative squared error (RSE). The results showed that the model had excellent prediction performance, with the mean values of RMSE less than 0.013, RAE less than 0.05, and RSE less than 0.004 on test data. Based on the results, we concluded that the proposed model could be a useful tool for designing an optimal straightening strategy for high-hardness metal workpieces. Our results will open the doors to implementing digital sustainability techniques, since more efficient handling will result in fewer subsequent heat treatments and shorter handling times. An important goal of digital sustainability is to reduce electricity consumption in production, which this approach will certainly do.

32nd Bled eConference Humanizing Technology for a Sustainable Society : June 16 – 19, 2019, Bled, Slovenia, Conference Proceedings
2019, zbornik recenziranih znanstvenih prispevkov na mednarodni ali tuji konferenci

Opis: Bled eConference, organized by University of Maribor, Faculty of Organizational Sciences, has been shaping electronic interactions since 1988. Bled eConference is the oldest, most traditional and well renowned conference in the field with more than 30 years of tradition. The theme of this year’s 32nd conference is dedicated to “Humanizing Technology for a Sustainable Society”. In 2018, European Commission emphasized that in the future, competitiveness will be dependent on the ability to move towards sustainability, resource-efficiency and the ability to exploit the advantages of digital technologies. In the context of digital society, implementation of digital technologies to achieve higher efficiency and competitive advantage is insufficient. Society calls for different economy models; more responsible, righteous and less exploitative. In this year’s conference, we address various aspects of these challenges and provide directions and guidelines for organizations to meet and overcome these challenges on their way towards successful digital transformation. Themes covered in the papers of these proceedings are focused on: digital transformation; business model innovation; blockchain and social media; big data, data science, and decision support systems; e-health, digital wellness and wellbeing; new applications and organizational models; and novel approaches and cases in education in digital economy.
Ključne besede: digital transformation, digital technology, innovation, digitalization, sustainability
