From zero to one: a new perspective on the fuzzy front end of innovation and the Stage-Gate® model
Peter Alešnik, Igor Vrečko, Iztok Palčič, 2025, izvirni znanstveni članek

Opis: The Stage-Gate® model has historically provided a systematic framework for New Product Development (NPD). However, the evolving landscape of innovation necessitates continuous enhancement. This paper redefines the model's foundational structure by advocating for the recognition of the Discovery Phase as Stage 1, emphasizing its essential role in aligning initial ideation with strategic goals, streamlining processes, and enhancing NPD efforts. Using a mixed-methods approach, including a systematic literature review, synthesis of illustrative examples and secondary data and case study analysis, the research demonstrates that formalizing the Discovery Phase improves earlystage decision-making, enhances alignment between front-end exploration and downstream execution and mitigates risks by supporting more informed project development. Synthesised sectoral examples show that incorporating the Discovery Phase improves feasibility, reduces risk, and boosts efficiency. For example, simulation planning early in innovation process increased manufacturing throughput by 52 %, while early IP checks lowered infringement risk. The proposed revision boosts the Stage-Gate® model's adaptability and integration with modern methodologies such as AI, Agile, Lean Startup, Design Thinking and TRIZ. The findings highlight how this change promotes a comprehensive approach to NPD. The implications extend to practical applications and future research, offering organizations a flexible framework that meets modern market and technological demands.

The impact of cross-border tourism in Ulcinj : a study of tourism development between Montenegro and Albania : a study of tourism development between Montenegro and Albania
Ajla Bajramspahić, 2025, diplomsko delo

Opis: This thesis investigates how Ulcinj's growth within the Montenegro–Albania corridor is influenced by cross-border tourism. First, a theoretical analysis demonstrated the connections between demand for tourism, employment, and investment; the significance of cooperation and governance; the interdependence of tourism and mobility; and the consequences of seasonality and sustainability. Next, we interviewed emergency services, public administration, local politicians, and business sector stakeholders in lodging and hospitality. The results show distinct advantages for turnover, employment, and small-scale investment, but they also show enduring drawbacks, such as poor public transportation and car-free accessibility, border lines and procedural unpredictability, disjointed governance, irregular electronic payments and taxi rates, noticeable summer peaks, and peak-season strain on municipal services. Targeted last-mile infrastructure improvements planned off-season events, operational mayor/DMO collaboration, direct cross-border public transportation links with basic one-stop/digital facilitation, and harmonized coastal standards were all recommendations made by interviewees. In order to establish a more stable, higher-value, year-round destination system, the thesis concludes by highlighting the necessity of strengthening operational environmental management, integrating mobility and border facilitation, improving governance coordination, and packaging and jointly marketing cross-border products.

Scoping out the common-sense perspective on meaningful work : theory, data and implications for human resource management and development
Francesco Tommasi, Riccardo Sartori, Andrea Ceschi, 2023, izvirni znanstveni članek

Opis: Background/Purpose: Meaningful work is a topic of relevant interest to management and organizational scholars. The study of meaningful work has been heavily characterized by theories from different disciplines, yet the common-sense perspective is often overlooked, i.e., a non-academic perspective of meaningful work. The paper presents a qualitative study on how non-academics define meaningful work. Methods: Adopting the lens of Aristotelian logic, the paper presents a methodological-theoretical approach to explore how non-academics define human resource management concepts. We asked 194 workers to propose ultimate definitions of the concept of meaningful work. The questions were submitted via a short survey collecting demographics. Results: The analysis of the collected definitions led to the proposition of an intensive definition of meaningful work according to which meaningful work is a positive experience associated with a sense of competence, the presence of positive relation with others, significance and purpose of work. Yet, there must be good reasons to experience work as meaningful as the environment may contain barriers to the presence of meaningfulness. Conclusion: Methodologically, the paper advances a novel approach to the study of human resource management and development concepts. Theoretically, the study proposes a novel perspective of meaningful work prioritizing concerns on the common-sense.

Digitalizacija registra prostovoljcev v črni gori
Luka Popović, 2024, diplomsko delo

Opis: The present thesis focuses on the development of a platform that will digitalize the volunteer log in Montenegro. To best understand the needs of our platform, we first need to gain a better understanding of what volunteering is, how it is carried out, and by whom, all taking into consideration the legal context. The currently existing solution for logging volunteer hours is highly impractical and seemingly has a low number of uses, indicating a need for renewal. In Montenegro, volunteering as well as any efforts volunteers put in have low recognition. Our solution is an easy-to-use, web platform developed in Flutter that enables seamless tracking of all volunteer services and activities and sets the foundation for a digital platform for everything related to volunteering on a national level. The research identifies the necessary functionalities through questionnaires for volunteers and interviews with volunteer managers and coordinators. Additionally, it explores the legal outline and how it navigates the desired outcome. Finally, an application is presented alongside the recommended improvements that will be added in the future. The developed platform allows for easy and comprehensive volunteer activity data tracking and helps streamline the volunteer management process. Its implementation would help with the national recognition of volunteer, as well as the skills and competencies one acquires through it.

Strategic transition to sustainability : a cybernetic model
Tjaša Štrukelj, Petya Dankova, Nomi Hrast, 2023, izvirni znanstveni članek

Opis: As the importance of the transition to sustainable development is increasingly recognised by individuals, organisations, and society as a whole, there is a growing need to examine its impact at micro-, meso-, and macro-levels. There is an urgent imperative to ensure the sustainability of growing economic inequalities, a degraded environment, and people living in uneven conditions in different societies. The authors, therefore, highlight the strategic role and essential contribution of organisations, and universities/higher education institutions in particular, in achieving sustainable development and the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Universities/higher education institutions play a key role in fostering entrepreneurship and innovation, and they form the crucial architecture of contemporary practices in national economies and beyond. Policy makers, university/higher education institution governors, managers, and professors shape students and create new social contexts, and these must be oriented towards sustainability. This paper aims to explore the strategic role of organisations, in particular, universities/higher education institutions, as a key link between personal and social responsibility and, thus, as a powerful enabler of sustainable development. The authors examine the strategic transition to sustainability of two higher education institutions, the University of Maribor and the University of Economics—Varna, and conduct a qualitative case study research to develop a cybernetic model of the university’s/higher education institution’s transition to sustainability, which reflects the organisation’s growing commitment to achieving the Sustainability Development Goals. The model includes seven successive stages: pre-awareness, awareness, focusing, implementation, reaching out, transparency and disclosure, and continuous improvement. The study shows that sustainable development, i.e., sustainability governance, management, and operations, are indispensable for implementing the strategic concept of sustainability in an organisation and for achieving the strategic transition to sustainability as explained in the proposed cybernetic model.

Development of a local event 'Summer in Samobor'
Nika Martina Mišić, 2023, diplomsko delo

Opis: Events are one of the main factors of tourism development of a destination. Also, local events are one of the biggest factors that influence tourism in every town, city or community, and they are of great importance for a tourist destination. Summer in Samobor is a particularly successful new event that is in the process of development. In the theoretical part of the graduate thesis, the following topics are explained: the significance of the event, the type and size of the event, the planning and realisation of the event and the sustainability of the event. In the first part of our research, we presented the theoretical knowledge on the subject. Then we presented the event Summer in Samobor taking into account the following factors: aims and visions of the event, programme of the event, place and time of the event, registrations and permits, financial management, sponsors, media and promotion, food and beverages, and finally the sustainability of the event. As part of our research, we conducted interviews with the representative of the external agency Wanderlust Events and the representative of the Samobor Tourist Board. Using the interviews mentioned, we found out how the event developed, what factors influenced the success of the event and how sustainable the event is. The results of this research show that this event is developing every year and that the quality of the event is constantly being raised. Also, as some of the main success factors of the event Summer in Samobor, the following were emphasized: improvement of socio-cultural awareness, strong promotion of sustainable events, rich and high-quality content, uniqueness, cooperation and support of partners, good organization and creative ideas.

Sustainability orientation and focus in logistics and supply chains
Sebastjan Lazar, Dorota Klimecka-Tatar, Matevž Obrecht, 2021, izvirni znanstveni članek

Opis: Sustainable development, logistics, and supply chain are being combined into three increasingly connected and topical global research areas. Therefore, this paper's novelty identifies and defines the priorities of the UN Sustainable Development Goals and sustainable development dimensions in supply-chain- and logistics-management-related studies in the last decade. Knowing logistics and supply chain sustainability focus and orientation is valuable information for researchers and managers to adapt and mitigate their business logistics according to the forecasted trends. The paper provides a systematic and comprehensive review of the literature and is based on 116 scientific papers published between 2010 and 2020 in 73 international journals in the Scopus and Web of Science databases. The study defines focus with integrating environmental, social, and economic sustainability for logistics- and supply-chain-related studies. It emphasizes primary and secondary links of investigated studies with 17 United Nations sustainable development goals. The bibliometric analysis also examined keyword relations. One of the main contributions is that economic sustainability was identified as the most represented one-dimensional sustainability focus. It was revealed that supply chain studies integrated all three sustainability dimensions more frequently (50.60%) than logistics studies, which were equally related to studying two- or three-dimensions of sustainability (39.39%). The most significant findings are also that studies were identified to be oriented primarily towards "responsible consumption and production", "industry, innovation, and infrastructure" and "affordable and clean energy" and secondary especially on "sustainable cities and communities".

Agile development of secure software for small and medium-sized enterprises
Anže Mihelič, Simon Vrhovec, Tomaž Hovelja, 2023, izvirni znanstveni članek

Opis: Although agile methods gained popularity and became globally widespread, developing secure software with agile methods remains a challenge. Method elements (i.e., roles, activities, and artifacts) that aim to increase software security on one hand can reduce the characteristic agility of agile methods on the other. The overall aim of this paper is to provide small- and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) with the means to improve the sustainability of their software development process in terms of software security despite their limitations, such as low capacity and/or financial resources. Although software engineering literature offers various security elements, there is one key research gap that hinders the ability to provide such means. It remains unclear not only how much individual security elements contribute to software security but also how they impact the agility and costs of software development. To address the gap, we identified security elements found in the literature and evaluated them for their impact on software security, agility, and costs in an international study among practitioners. Finally, we developed a novel lightweight approach for evaluating agile methods from a security perspective. The developed approach can help SMEs to adapt their software development to their needs.

Measuring sustainability in supply chains : comparative study of 15 top logistic companies operating in Slovenia
Petra Serdinšek, Lara Sladič, Matevž Obrecht, 2022, izvirni znanstveni članek

Opis: Our research work refers to measuring sustainability in supply chains. First of all we will touch the topic, what means measuring sustainability in supply chain and how it can be measured. We will focus on our research area of fifteen companies, where we will investigate how much Slovenian companies deal with sustainability in their companies, how much sustainability means to them and how they measure it, if their company contributes a lot to the sustainability of supply chain or to the sustainable operation of the whole company. In recent years, have the supply chains undergone significant changes as a result of the COVID-19 crisis, which has forced companies to change the way of their operating in order to make their supply chains more efficient. The COVID-19 crisis has therefore made companies realize that they need to move to a circular economy, as it has shown the disruption or vulnerability of current supply chains. About sustainability is more and more speech and also more and more companies are recognizing its importance, because sustainable supply chain affects to the entire production process, from the sourcing of raw materials to the recycling of products or raw materials, if this is possible. A sustainable supply chain increases a company’s competitiveness and also reduces costs for the company.
