Economic analysis of the cultural and creative industries in Slovenia
Nika Murovec, Damjan Kavaš, 2012, izvirni znanstveni članek

Opis: This paper presents results of the qualitative and quantitative economic analyses of the cultural and creative industries (CCI), which were carried outwithin two projects: "Creative Cities" and "The state of design, with a focus on industrial design, as a part of creative industries, and best international practices as a foundation for fostering this sector in Slovenia." This paper tacked the several methodological issues related to CCI analysis by combining different methodological approaches in order to improve their reliability. The main results of the public sector, industrial, occupational, and SWOT (strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, threats) analyses are described. CCI in Slovenia presented as a potential that has not been fully mobilised. In order to further develop CCI and exploit the economic potential, a comprehensive policy support of CCI at the local, national, and EU levels is needed.

Racial, cultural, and linguistic aspects of rap music : master's thesis
Luka Kovač, 2022, magistrsko delo

Opis: At the beginning of the master's thesis, we will deal with this topic, i.e., the pioneers of the development of rap music. Above all, we will be interested in how this development took place in a cultural sense and how African-American culture influenced it. This cultural as well as sociological aspect will be present throughout the thesis. In the master's thesis, we will also use the title hip Hop music. The term rap has historically been used more for commercial purposes, while the term hip hop has a more cultural background. Rap music was heavily influenced by disco music, among other things, as disco also emphasized the key role of DJs in creating songs and mixes for dancers. While early disco music was strongly associated with African-American and Italian-American culture, which developed mainly in subculture clubs, a trend began in the 1970s, when expensively recorded disco songs produced by the increasingly popular music industry took over. The first few initial chapters will focus on this topic. It is virtually impossible to talk about hip hop or rap music without mentioning AAVE (African-American Vernacular English). Many African-Americans are living in the US. Their ancestors, or at least most of them, came to the USA as slaves. They were brought to Jamestown, Virginia, in 1619, and then a continuous stream of slaves was present until 1808, when the slave trade was abolished. These waves of enslaved Africans did not speak English but their local languages. When they arrived in the USA, they learned English, the dominant language. Linguists' assumptions differ to this day regarding how successful they were in acquiring the new language and how much their local languages in Africa influenced them. In this thesis, we will elaborate on the different theories regarding the origin of AAVE and its grammatical and phonetic features. We will also devote a good part of the thesis to an essential part of the history of rap music, namely the rivalry between the US East Coast rap and US West Coast rap. Finally, we will add another chapter where we will briefly outline the development of rap music in Slovenia. We will focus on the lyrics in the second empirical part of the thesis, where we will highlight some of the selected songs. We will compare and analyze the compositions. We will focus more extensively on the linguistic features, as these make rap music stand out compared to other musical genres. We will also look at the specific characteristics of rap lyrics compared to different genres.

Cultural complex by the river Morača, Podgorica, Montenegro : master thesis
Filip Radojević, 2021, magistrsko delo

Opis: The masters’ thesis aims to examine the practice of appropriation of inherent qualities of certain sites in the city and the necessity of their preservation against dramatically developing trend of private real-estate and consumer-capitalism driven land-claim. The latter, in combination with inadequate response from government institutions can contribute to a total loss of areas of public interest in the city. The location of the former ”Kasarna Morača” military barracks in Podgorica makes for a valuable target for the greedy investors, but also to the public, which could benefit from a large mass of greenery in the very centre of the capital next to the Morača river. For this reason, questions have been raised sparking public debates on how this location, currently an asset of the state, ought to be managed. This project aims to develop an urban regeneration solution for the brownfield area by means of two interconnected segments. The first one is the recreation area along the Morača riverbank which incorporates a large part of the existing greenery and extends to the Mausoleum of the Partisan fighter on the Gorica hill. The second is situated at the Eastern edge of the site. With the adaptive reuse of the existing barrack structures and a new adaptable and flexible structural system, it proposes a set of public and cultural programs along the”Vaka Đurovića” boulevard. Both the green belt and the cultural complex are connected via pedestrian and cycling paths which also lead to a proposed pedestrian bridge connecting the public institutions, neighbourhoods and recreational areas along Morača riverbanks.

Arhitektura kot/za kulturo: muzej industrijske dediščine Maribora in kulturno-kreativni center Tezno : magistrsko delo
Maša Čelebić, 2021, magistrsko delo

Opis: The concept of the Maribor Industrial Heritage Trail, as a form of revitalization of the Maribor industrial zones and the development of the city's cultural content, is being proposed in this master's thesis in the narrow belt of the Tezno industrial zone. The project is based on detailed analyzes of the wider and narrower location, on the basis of which a concept proposal is given for the urban development of the Tezno zone and Perhavčeva cesta, as part of the Maribor Industrial Heritage Trail. The conceptual design of the Cultural and Creative Center Tezno and the entrance building of the Museum of Industrial Heritage of Maribor, which is proposed in the underground tunnels on Tezno, enriches the cultural, memorial and ecological content of this part of the trail. Through a theoretical overview and conceptual solutions, the relationship between the meaning of architecture as culture and architecture for culture is shown on the example of a master's project.

Teaching Culture Through English in Slovenian Primary and Secondary Schools: An Analysis of the Intercultural Element in Textbooks
Eva Hršak, 2019, magistrsko delo

Opis: Our thesis begins by discussing the concept of culture. Next, it considers the importance of incorporating culture into foreign language teaching and developing intercultural communicative competence. We have discovered that culture is an inevitable part of our everyday lives. It shapes our identities and helps in explaining our actions. Therefore, being unaware of the characteristics of other cultures may result in misunderstandings. As teachers, we must be aware of the importance of culture and should be able to familiarize our learners with its elements. By incorporating elements of culture into lessons, our learners will not only become competent English speakers, but will also know how to appropriately and effectively adjust to a variety of situations, and how to maintain and establish personal relationships. In the empirical section of the thesis, we have studied primary and secondary school English teachers’ views on teaching culture. The results showed that the teachers are aware of the importance of culture teaching since all the participants include various cultural elements into their English lessons. In addition, we have analysed the eight most frequently used English textbooks the teachers use in Slovenia in terms of the cultural elements they contain. We have decided to analyse textbooks as the main resource for teaching culture since textbooks are an indispensable and also a mandatory resource for every English teacher. The analysis showed that the textbooks contain a variety of cultural elements and are taught with the help of multiple strategies.

The nature of security culture in a military organization : a case study of the Slovenian Armed Forces
Denis Čaleta, Katja Rančigaj, Branko Lobnikar, 2011, izvirni znanstveni članek

Opis: Purpose: The purpose of this research article is to define and explain the role of security culture as an important factor in the provision of effective preparedness of security organisation members for managing new types of security challenges, which are transnational, asymmetric and complex in form. It should be noted that, to a great extent, the internalisation of security awareness and the attitude towards security information depends on the organisational dynamics in an organisation. The article will complement theoretical findings with the analysis of the nature of security culture in a security (military) organisation, the priority of which is a high level of awareness of the effects of security culture and its integration in individual and organisational values. Design/Methods/Approach: The article presents views of the Slovenian Armed Forces’ (SAF) members on the perception of factors relevant for the operation of processes forming security culture. The research was carried out on a sample of SAF employees who use classified information in their work. Altogether 53 respondents participated in the survey. The security culture was measured with questions in the form of 31 statements. The respondents answered these statements with the help of a five-level scale. The Cronbach’s alpha coefficient for the listed statements was 0.932. Finally, the nature of security culture was established with the help of a factor analysis. Findings: A factor analysis, carried out at the beginning of the analysis, helped establish six factors of security culture which enabled us to explain 71.99 percent of the variance. The identified factors intended for explaining security culture in the context of a military organisation are as follows: personnel requirements for management of classified information, competence for maintenance of security culture, attitude towards the protection of classified information, procedures for ensuring protection of classified information, recording and elimination of violations in the protection of classified information and organisational measures for management of classified information. The results of the survey carried out among the SAF employees demonstrated that the respondents estimated marked all identified security culture sets of contents above average, with marks ranging between 3 and 4 in all statements. Research limitations: The survey covered those SAF members who use classified information in their work. Hence the results of the survey are primarily applicable to the military environment and could not be generalized for other security organisations. Practical implications: The results of the survey can be directly applied to the management of processes for the protection and management of classified information in the SAF. Furthermore, they also indicate the application of the theoretical understanding of security culture’s significance to the success of security organizations’ performance. Originality/Value: The survey introduces an original approach to the measurement of security culture in security organisations. It can serve as a valuable basis for further research on the interaction of security culture with other factors in security organisations, such as for instance organisational culture. Practicians of criminal justice and security, military science and other similar scientific disciplines can also find this article useful in their further study of standpoints and attitudes of security organisations’ members about their role in the processes of establishing an appropriate security culture, as a precondition for effective management of new challenges and threats that we witness in the contemporary security environment.

References to American Culture in the TV Series Supernatural: Analysis of Selected Episodes
Sabina Bedek, 2019, magistrsko delo

Opis: The main aim of this master's thesis is to look into the use of references to American culture in the selected episodes of TV series Supernatural. The empirical part is divided into two parts. In the first part, there is an analysis of references in the selected episodes, which includes the context in which they appear, explanation and possible understanding or misunderstanding by the Slovene viewers. The analysis shows that most of the references are connected to popular culture, especially TV, movies and music. Other cultural categories which appear are literature, general American culture and sport. The purpose of the most references is to appeal to the broader audience, set the humoristic mood and identify the character. The second part of the empirical part is questionnaire analysis. Questionnaires were handed out to first- and third-year students of English Language and Literature on Faculty of Arts in Maribor. With this questionnaire, the level of understanding of selected references and possible differences between the results of first-year and third-year students have been be examined. The questionnaire contained 10 multiple-choice questions. The results show no significant deviances in the correctness of the answers of third- and first-year students; however, the first-year students reached slightly higher percent of correct answers. The students performed better on questions related to present American popular culture (Hulk, Star Wars, The Parent Trap). Questions with the least correct answers were those on American general culture, especially cultural items that are not present in the Slovene culture (for example, GED and historic cultural elements).

Innovating in a Startup: Germany versus Slovenia
Martina Repnik, 2018, diplomsko delo

Opis: Startup companies are enterprises, which are created with the purpose of growth. The driving force of their growth is innovation, which contributes to the competitive advantage of companies in general. Those companies that have a competitive advantage over other companies can exist on a larger scale: they can employ a greater number of workers which contributes to lower unemployment rates in national economies. That is why startup companies are so important for a country’s well-being, and it is crucial for governments that want economic growth to support them. The most efficient way the government can support startups is through creating the right environment where they can exist and develop. There are different factors that contribute to an overall efficient environment; the most relevant one for this thesis is innovation activity. In the thesis, all the relevant factors were analyzed and the chosen countries (Germany and Slovenia) were compared based on their scores. This way, a more startup-friendly business environment was established. Moreover, interviews with startups from each observed country were conducted to further confirm/deny the theoretical conclusions established in the thesis. From all the information gathered, both theoretical and practical, our assumption that Germany has a better ecosystem for startups to exist in was confirmed.

Professional languages alone do not suffice for successful and socially responsible internal communication between different cultures
Darja Kukovec, Matjaž Mulej, Simona Šarotar Žižek, 2018, izvirni znanstveni članek

Opis: Successful internal communication in an intercultural environment depends on the organizational culture, business environment, social responsibility, and leaders’ skills. Thus, internal communication and employee adaptation to changing business environments ask what a successful socially responsible internal communication requires. This contribution discusses theoretical foundations of qualitative research, how the organizational culture can define which direction the organization should chose to attain social responsibility, and how internal communication can improve understanding of professional language and be decisive in a working environment. The generated model offers insights into understanding social responsibility and organizational culture to improve internal communication.
