1. COVID-19 and social distancing : ǂa ǂcross-cultural study of interpersonal distance preferences and touch behaviors before and during the pandemicIlona Croy, Andreja Avsec, Tina Kavčič, Bojan Musil, Nejc Plohl, Gaja Zager Kocjan, Maja Zupančič, 2024, izvirni znanstveni članek Opis: The COVID-19 pandemic has led to the introduction of unprecedented safety measures, one of them being physical distancing recommendations. Here, we assessed whether the pandemic has led to long-term effects on two important physical distancing aspects, namely interpersonal distance preferences and interpersonal touch behaviors. We analyzed nearly 14,000 individual cases from two large, cross-cultural surveys – the first conducted 2 years prior to the pandemic and the second during a relatively stable period of a decreased infection rate in May-June 2021. Preferred interpersonal distances increased by 54% globally during the COVID-19 pandemic. This increase was observable across all types of relationships, all countries, and was more pronounced in individuals with higher self-reported vulnerability to diseases. Unexpectedly, participants reported a higher incidence of interpersonal touch behaviors during than before the pandemic. We discuss our results in the context of prosocial and self-protection motivations that potentially promote different social behaviors. 3. Cross-platform Sense Glove Communications : magistrsko deloKlemen Peganc, 2019, diplomsko delo Opis: In this thesis, we have redesigned the communication protocol for the Sense Glove device, so it works on all major operating systems. This opened new ways to develop applications, which use the device and also increased the interest of developers, who use the operating systems on which the development was not possible before. The device has many use cases, such as Virtual Reality training and different kinds of simulations. We have used open-source wxWidgets and Boost libraries to help us mostly with creating a graphical user interface and the serial/bluetooth communication with the Sense Glove device. 4. Business English as a lingua franca : a cross-cultural perspective of teaching English for business purposesNataša Gajšt, 2014, pregledni znanstveni članek Opis: In our era of globalisation, English is at the top of the languages used in international business. A vast majority of business communication in English is carried out by non-native speakers of English. In a cross-cultural exchange of information, the sender and the recipient come from different cultural backgrounds. The patterns of communication vary across the globe and non-native speakers tend to apply their native language patterns when communicating in English. This paper thus focuses on the concept of spoken communication and dimensions of culture and how they are reflected in communication patterns in different business situations. It also addresses the teaching of Business English as a lingua franca and the role of Business English teachers in helping learners develop their communicative and intercultural competence in order to communicate effectively in a multicultural work environment.
