Challenges that need to be addressed before starting new emergency remote teaching at HEIs and proposed solutions

Opis: Emergency Remote Teaching (ERT) aims to swiftly adapt conventional face-to-face educational methods to alternative (typically virtual) formats during crises. The recent COVID-19 pandemic accentuated the vulnerability of traditional educational systems, revealing limitations in their ability to effectively withstand such unprecedented events, thereby exposing shortcomings in the adopted ERT strategies. The goal of this study is to discuss the establishment of resilient, sustainable, and healthy educational systems in non-crisis times, which will enable teachers and students to make a smoother and less stressful transition to Emergency Remote Teaching (ERT) when necessary. A comprehensive hybrid approach, combining quantitative (interviews) and qualitative (online survey) methods has obtained data from 276 professors in 29 countries. These data have been used to identify a range of challenges related to ERT and their perceived level of difficulty. The methodological and social challenges (overshadowed by technical issues at the beginning of the crisis) identified in this research—such as the lack of personal contact or poor feedback from students—have been found to be the most demanding. From the collected insights regarding the perceived level of difficulty associated with the identified challenges, the present study aims to contribute to making higher education systems more robust in non-crisis times.

Artificial-intelligence-supported reduction of employees’ workload to increase the company’s performance in today’s VUCA environment

Opis: This paper aims to develop a multidimensional model of AI-supported employee workload reduction to increase company performance in today's VUCA environment. Multidimensional constructs of the model include several aspects of artificial intelligence related to human resource management: AI-supported organizational culture, AI-supported leadership, AI-supported appropriate training and development of employees, employees' perceived reduction of their workload by AI, employee engagement, and company's performance. The main survey involved 317 medium-sized and large Slovenian companies. Structural equation modeling was used to test the hypotheses. The results show that three multidimensional constructs (AI-supported organizational culture, AI-supported leadership, and AI-supported appropriate training and development of employees) have a statistically significant positive effect on employees' perceived reduction of their workload by AI. In addition, employees' perceived reduced workload by AI has a statistically significant positive effect on employee engagement. The results show that employee engagement has a statistically significant positive effect on company performance. The concept of engagement is based on the fact that the development and growth of the company cannot be achieved by increasing the number of employees or by adding capital; the added value comes primarily from increased productivity, which is a result of the innovative ability of employees and their work engagement, which improve the company's performance. The results will significantly contribute to creating new views in the field of artificial intelligence and adopting important decisions in creating working conditions for employees in today's rapidly changing work environment.

How do job-related constructs determine employee turnover? : Serbian hotels example

Opis: In the hospitality industry, employee turnover is extremely high. It is often caused by minimal growth opportunities, intensive work, lack of flexibility, limited opportunities for promotion, lack of recognition, etc. Investment in human resources, strategies that maintain an adequate workforce and improve employee engagement is quite justified cost with multiple returns. The specific issue is that hospitality leaders often do not know the relationships between employee satisfaction, employee motivation and employee engagement, which may be the basis for understanding their intention to leave the job. The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between the three job-related constructs: motivation, job satisfaction, and work engagement, as well as to examine their impact on employee turnover. The results confirmed a positive relationship between job satisfaction and motivation, satisfaction and work engagement, as well as the relationship between motivation and engagement. On the other side, the results showed that job satisfaction, dedication, and vigor negatively predict employee turnover. The findings may provide hotel managers with a foundation to understand this issue and assume where to direct their research and how to improve job conditions.

Enhancing the performance of high-growth small- and medium-sized enterprises through effective project- management processes and stakeholder engagement : a systems perspective

Opis: This study examines the impact of project management practices on high-growth Small and Medium-sized Enterprises (HG SMEs) from a systems perspective, utilizing Structural Equation Modelling (SEM) and data from a diverse SME sample. It investigates the intricate relationships among project management system support, project management processes, stakeholder involvement, project management success, project success, and HG SME growth. Our findings highlight the substantial positive influence of project management processes and stakeholder engagement on project management success. These factors subsequently contribute significantly to both project success and the overall growth of HG SMEs. Notably, project management system support does not exhibit a substantial influence on these success factors. Furthermore, our research uncovers important indirect effects. Project management processes indirectly impact both project success and HG SME growth, underscoring their central role. Similarly, stakeholder involvement indirectly influences HG SME growth through its impact on project success, emphasizing its significance. This study contributes to the existing body of knowledge by emphasizing the critical roles of project management processes, stakeholder engagement, and project success as drivers of SME growth. These insights have valuable implications for SME managers, project leaders, and policymakers, highlighting the essential nature of effective project management in shaping the growth trajectory of SMEs.

The impact of serious games in economic and business education: a case of ERP business simulation

Opis: Digitalisation nowadays impacts business environments significantly. Therefore, if higher education wants to educate students properly for a successful career path, the business and economics curriculum must be enriched with innovative teaching approaches covering actual topics, such as, for example, the implementation of the ERPsim business simulation, a representative of serious games. The ERPsim business simulation is based on SAP ERP, and is aimed at teaching ERP concepts. It covers different business processes, and allows students to learn using a hands-on approach, simulating real-life scenarios. The presented research focuses on using an ERPsim business simulation as the introduction to the course. The simulation was implemented to ease the introduction of ERP and IT concepts to the business and economic oriented students. Considering the positive effects of serious games and gamification, our research was formed and focused on knowledge acquisition and future student engagement. We researched whether participation in the introductory simulation results in significant knowledge gain and impacts students’ future course engagement. The data were gathered using a self-assessment questionnaire before and after an introductory simulation. The results were highly positive, confirming many positive aspects of business simulation, among others, significant knowledge increase in the domains of business process and ERP transactions, and in the domain of technical knowledge for SAP ERP. The results confirmed that the introductory simulation is appropriate for introducing ERP concepts to newcomers, and, nevertheless, confirmed the positive impact on their intent on future course engagement.

Relationships between work-family balance, job satisfaction, life satisfaction and work engagement among higher education lecturers

Opis: Background and Purpose: Our research examines the impact of work-life balance on work engagement, both di­rect impact as well as through job and life satisfaction. The main aim of our research is to empirically test relations between work-life balance, job satisfaction, life satisfaction, and work engagement among higher education lectur­ers from Austria, Croatia, Czech Republic, Germany, Serbia, and Slovenia. Methods: Using validated questionnaires, we collected data on work-life balance, job satisfaction, life satisfaction and their work engagement. The quantitative data for our analysis were collected through a survey of 164 online participants. Based on an extensive literature review, we have formulated five hypotheses, which we tested in one structural model by using structural equation modelling (SEM). Results: Our findings show that an increase in work-life balance positively relates to life and work satisfaction and that life satisfaction leads to an increase in work engagement. Conclusion: The knowledge of important impact of work-life balance, together with the understanding of the rela­tions between the researched constructs of work-life balance, life satisfaction, job satisfaction and work engage­ment, can strengthen teachers’ work engagement by respecting employees as actors in other roles and supporting work-family balance in the form of family-friendly policies and practices, and thereby contributes to the area of employee’s behaviour and improves the teacher’s productivity.

Kritični dejavniki uspeha uvajanja rešitev CRM na primeru Microsoft Dynamics 365 Customer Engagement

Opis: V današnjem času se podjetja zaradi nenehnih sprememb tehnologije in konkurenčnosti borijo za pridobivanje in zadrževanje strank. Tako se je koncept upravljanja odnosov s strankami oblikoval tudi kot strateška rešitev za podjetja. V prvem delu magistrskega dela se bomo srečali s pojmom upravljanje odnosov s strankami in ga opredelili. Opredelili bomo CRM rešitev in njeno arhitekturo, ki se deli na strateško, strukturno in procesno. Predstavili bomo namestitvene modele CRM rešitev, ki smo jih podrobneje razdelili na CRM rešitev na lokaciji in CRM rešitev v oblaku. V magistrskem delu bomo opredelili prednosti in slabosti CRM rešitev in izpostavili nekaj ponudnikov CRM rešitev ter trende, ki se pojavljajo na področju CRM rešitev. Predstavili bomo izbiro in uvedbo CRM rešitev. Pri uvedbi CRM rešitev bomo predstavili najpogosteje izbrana pristopa uvedbe CRM rešitev, in sicer fazni in agilni pristop. Nato se bomo osredotočili na kritične dejavnike uspeha uvajanja CRM rešitev in sklope le-teh. Sklopi, ki jih bomo opredelili, so človeški, organizacijski in tehnološki. V drugem delu magistrskega dela se bomo osredotočili na metodologijo Microsoft Dynamics Sure Step, rešitev Microsoft Dynamics 365 Customer Engagement in KDU uvajanja Microsoft Dyanmics 365 Customer Engagement. Podrobneje bomo predstavili tudi rešitev Microsoft Dynamics 365 Customer Enagagement. Opredelili bomo prednosti, ki nam jih prinaša. Za uvedbo Microsoft Dynamics 365 Customer Engagement bomo uporabili metodologijo Microsoft Dynamics Sure Step in agilni pristop. Med KDU uvajanja Microsoft Dyanmics 365 Customer Engagement bomo uvrstili človeške, organizacijske in tehnološke sklope. Te smo opredelili z vidika podpore uprave, izvršnega direktorja, organizacijske kulture, organizacijske infrastrukture, človeških virov, upravljanje znanja, strategije, procesov, kakovosti informacij, rešitve in storitve, integracije, usmerjenosti na stranko, izkušeni in usposobljeni zaposleni ter tehnološke pripravljenosti. Identificirali bomo tudi kritične dejavnike uspeha po uvedbi Microsoft Dynamics 365 Customer Engagement.

How to strengthen employee engagement among Slovenian criminal investigators?

Opis: Purpose: In terms of providing security, employee engagement may be defined as an important contribution by individual criminal investigators or their physical, cognitive and emotional dedication to their work. Employee engagement positively correlates with one’s work, as reflected in the dedication, absorption, and psychological state accompanied by personal energy invested in the work. A fundamental question for the criminal investigation police thus arises of how to achieve maximum engagement and commitment in police work, which in turn will contribute to greater security in Slovenia. Design/Methods/Approach: The article is based on empirical research conducted among 160 Slovenian criminal investigators. We used Gallup’s Q12 Employee Engagement Survey to measure employee engagement. Findings: The research encompassing 160 Slovenian criminal investigators shows that most criminal investigators are disengaged. The research also reveals that employee engagement is statistically significantly correlated with self-efficacy, social undermining by one’s supervisor, social support by one’s supervisor and colleagues, as well as cynicism. To raise employee engagement among the Slovenian criminal investigators, we propose several measures affecting the conduct of the police, labour legal matters, operational issues and the leadership. Research Limitations / Implications: The first limitation is social desirability bias. The second limitation is a labour strike that was underway while we were collecting the data from the police officers. Practical Implications: The proposed actions should raise the level of employee engagement of Slovenian criminal investigators, while also enhancing the police service’s reliability. Originality/Value: This is the first paper to research employee engagement among Slovenian criminal investigators.

The Language of Appraisals in Articles About Ice Hockey

Opis: Media articles, regardless of the media in which they are published (e.g. news, a report, a notification), are generally expected to be characterized by balance and objectivity as one of their most important and identifiable characteristics. However, the results of the analysis show that this is not entirely true for the articles about ice hockey analysed in this thesis. Thus, the presence of a certain degree of subjectivity has been determined. In the thesis, the article was considered objective when the writer wrote about the facts and data that could be checked and did not reveal his/her emotions, presence or opinion. At the same time, the article was considered subjective when the writer was present in the article in a way that s/he revealed his/her emotions or s/he evaluated what was going on and/or the hockey players. For the analysis, the appraisal model developed in 2005 by Martin and White was used because it turned out to be the most useful as their appraisal categories (graduation, engagement, and attitude) cover all lexical choices, with which one shows his/her attitude or engagement or graduates something. Appraisal can be a single word or a phrase that indirectly/implicitly or directly/explicitly expresses one’s opinion, judgement, or engagement. According to the Longman Dictionary of Contemporary English (LDOCE), appraisal is “a statement or opinion judging the worth, value, or condition of something” (https://www.ldoceonline.com/dictionary/appraisal), while the Oxford Advanced Learner’s Dictionary (OALD, 8th Edition) defines it as “a judgement of the value, performance or nature of sb/sth” (OALD 2010: 62). The analysis of the articles was carried out with Computer Assisted Text Markup and Analysis (CATMA) platform. Objectives of the thesis were to research the differences in the use of appraisals in the articles that describe the same event, i.e. the ice hockey match. Thus, it was researched how the author’s presence and engagement were reflected through appraisal, and how much of subjectivity was present in the articles that were supposed to be objective. Next, I was interested in how the writer is positioned in the articles which report about the winning team, and how in the articles reporting about the losing team. Finally, it was researched which types of appraisal were used in three articles which report about the same match and were published on the official web sites of Los Angeles Kings and Colorado Avalanche, and in the article that was published in a neutral web media FOX Sports. The results showed that the articles that were published on the official web sites of the teams tended to be more subjective as numerous instances of the writer’s presence and engagement were found. On the other hand, the article from the neutral web site turned out to be the most objective and unbiased, even though some instances of the writer’s presence and engagement were found as well.

The impact of behavioral symptoms of burnout on work engagement of older employees : the case of Slovenian companies

Opis: The main objective of the paper is to determine the impact of behavioral symptoms of burnout of older employees on their work engagement in large- and medium- sized companies in Slovenia. The research is based on the implementation of a factor analysis by which we wanted to reduce the large number of variables into a smaller number of factors. With those factors, we performed a simple linear regression. Based on the results, we confirmed the hypothesis that behavioral symptoms of burnout of older employees have a statistically significant negative impact on their work engagement. Well-being of employees of varying ages in the workplace is key for long-term effectiveness of companies. From this point of view, companies should apply appropriate measures to reduce burnout as well as to contribute to employees’ well-being and better workplace performance, which is reflected in work engagement of employees.
