The impact of management control systems - strategy interaction on performance management
Darja Peljhan, Metka Tekavčič, 2008, izvirni znanstveni članek

Opis: We study the interaction between management control systems and strategy its impact on organisational performance considering the way in which multiple aspects of control systems and dimensions of context combine in a variety of ways to enhance performance. Our purpose is to investigate the relationship among management control systems, strategy and organisational performance in a particular company. The contribution of this study is that it upgrades the existing theory in that it does not only establish a relationship between strategy and management control systems, but also considers how this relationships impacts on organisational performance. The study shows that the combination of performance-driven behaviour and regular use of management control systems leads to improved results. The second contribution of the study is that it incorporates a wider range of controls, including informal controls as being equally important as formal controls, to provide a more comprehensive analysis, as opposed to the majority of prior studies focusing on a more limited range of controls. In this way, this paper contributes to the literature in terms of examination of the broader components of management control systems than was previously done.

The impact of wind-power generation on the planning of regulating reserve
Dunja Srpak, Boštjan Polajžer, 2017, izvirni znanstveni članek

Opis: This paper presents new approach to the optimal distribution of the regulating reserve (RR) in a set of available regulating generation units. It is developed using evolutionary computation for the transmission-loss minimization and power-flow computation by applying the iterative method with a reactive power correction for voltage control. The approach involves the use of actual operating data directly from the network’s dispatch centre as well as daily and hourly plans of wind and load power for determining the RR requirements for the load frequency control (LFC). By testing the proposed approach on a case study, the possibility of implementing it on real power systems is demonstrated. The obtained results of the testing with actual data from the Croatian control area indicate substantial savings in ancillary service costs for the LFC and the considerable impact of different variations from the plan of each individual wind-power plant on the optimal RR distribution.

Intelligent adaptive cutting force control in end-milling
Uroš Župerl, Franc Čuš, Edvard Kiker, 2006, izvirni znanstveni članek

Opis: In this article, an adaptive neural controller for the ball end-milling process is described. Architecture with two different kinds of neural networks is proposed, and is used for the on-line optimal control of the milling process. A BP neural network is used to identify the milling state and to determin the optimal cutting inputs. The feedrate is selected as the optimised variable, and the milling state is estimated by the measured cutting force. The adaptive controller is operated by a PC and the adjusted feedrates are sent to the CNC. The purpose of this article is to present a reliable, robust neural controller aimed at adaptively adjusting feed-rate to prevent excessive tool wear, tool breakage and maintain a high chip removal rate. The goal is also to obtain an improvement of the milling process productivity by the use of an automatic regulation of the cutting force. Numerous simulations are conducted to confirm the efficiency of this architecture. The proposed architecture for on-line determining of optimal cutting conditions is applied to ball end-milling in this paper, but it is obvious that the system can be extended to other machines to improve cutting efficiency.

Optimal robust motion controller design using multi-objective genetic algorithm
Andrej Sarjaš, Rajko Svečko, Amor Chowdhury, 2014, izvirni znanstveni članek

Opis: This paper describes the use of a multi-objective genetic algorithm for robust motion controller design. Motion controller structure is based on a disturbance observer in an RIC framework. The RIC approach is presented in the form with internal and external feedback loops, in which an internal disturbance rejection controller and an external performance controller must be synthesised. This paper involves novel objectives for robustness and performance assessments for such an approach. Objective functions for the robustness property of RIC are based on simple even polynomials with non-negativity conditions. Regional pole placement method is presented with the aims of controllers% structures simplification and their additional arbitrary selection. Regional pole placement involves arbitrary selection of central polynomials for both loops, with additional admissible region of the optimized pole location. Polynomial deviation between selected and optimized polynomials is measured with derived performance objective functions. A multi-objective function is composed of different unrelated criteria such as, robust stability, controllers' stability and time performance indexes of closed loops. The design of controllers and multi-objective optimization procedure involve a set of the objectives, which are optimized simultaneously with a genetic algorithm - Differential evolution.

Quasipolynomial approach to simultaneous robust control of time-delay systems
Nikolaj Semenič, Andrej Sarjaš, Amor Chowdhury, Rajko Svečko, izvirni znanstveni članek

Opis: A control law for retarded time-delay systems is considered, concerning infinite closed-loop spectrum assignment. An algebraic method for spectrum assignment is presented with a unique optimization algorithm for minimization of spectral abscissa and effective shaping of the chains of infinitely many closed-loop poles. Uncertainty of plant delays of a certain structure is considered in a sense of a robust simultaneous stabilization. Robust performance is achieved using mixed sensitivity design, which is incorporated into the addressed control law.

Implementation of hard real-time embedded control systems
Matjaž Colnarič, Domen Verber, Roman Gumzej, Wolfgang A. Halang, 1998, samostojni znanstveni sestavek ali poglavje v monografski publikaciji

Opis: Although the domain of hard real-time systems has been thoroughly elaborated in the academic sphere, embedded computer control systems - being an important in mechatronic design - are seldom dealt with consistemntly. Often, off-the-shelf computer systems are used, with no guarantee that they will be able to meet the requirements specified. In this paper, a design for embedded control systems is presented. particulary, the paper deals with the hardware architecture and design details, the operating sustem, and the high-level real-time language support. It is shown how estimates of process run-times necessary for schedulability analysis can be acquired on the basis of deterministic behavior of the hardware platform.

Spatial coherence resonance in neuronal media with discrete local dynamics
Matjaž Perc, 2006, izvirni znanstveni članek

Opis: We study effects of spatiotemporal additive noise on the spatial dynamics of excitable neuronal media that is locally modelled by a two-dimensional map. We focus on the ability of noise to enhance a particular spatial frequency of the media in a resonant manner. We show that there exists an optimal noise intensity for which the inherent spatial periodicity of the media is resonantly pronounced, thus marking the existence of spatial coherence resonance in the studied system. Additionally, results are discussed in view of their possible biological importance.

Effects of small-world connectivity on noise-induced temporal and spatial order in neural media
Matjaž Perc, 2006, izvirni znanstveni članek

Opis: We present an overview of possible effects of small-world connectivity on noise-induced temporal and spatial order in a two-dimensional network of excitable neural media with FitzHugh-Nagumo local dynamics. Small-world networks are characterized by a given fraction of so-called long-range couplings or shortcut links that connect distant units of the system, while all other units are coupled in a diffusive-like manner. Interestingly, already a small fraction of these long-range couplings can have wide-ranging effects on the temporal as well as spatial noise-induced dynamics of the system. Here we present two main effects. First, we show that the temporal order, characterized by the autocorrelation of a firing-rate function, can be greatly enhanced by the introduction of small-world connectivity, whereby the effect increases with the increasing fraction of introduced shortcut links. Second, we show that the introduction of long-range couplings induces disorderof otherwise ordered, spiral-wave-like, noise-induced patterns that can be observed by exclusive diffusive connectivity of spatial units. Thereby, already a small fraction of shortcut links is sufficient to destroy coherent pattern formation in the media. Although the two results seem contradictive, we provide an explanation considering the inherent scale-free nature of small-world networks, which on one hand, facilitates signal transduction and thus temporal order in the system, whilst on the other hand, disrupts the internal spatial scale of the media thereby hindering the existence of coherent wave-like patterns. Additionally, the importance of spatially versus temporally ordered neural network functioning is discussed.
