ANALYSIS OF SLANG EXPRESSION IN THE NOVEL THE CATCHER IN THE RYE IN COMPARISON WITH ITS TWO SLOVENE TRANSLATIONS
Barbara Lapuh, 2011, diplomsko delo

Opis: Diploma thesis consists of two major parts, theoretical and empirical. In the theoretical part slang is represented in general. Slang is a special form of colloquial language, which has a special vocabulary and consists of new expressions or old expressions with new or different meaning. These expressions are formed with standard wordformational forms, e.g. compounding, derivation, onomatopoea, etc. Slang can, with time, become a part of standard language, it can be popular for some time and then be forgotten or stay slang forever. There are many kinds of slang and they are: family, children, youthful, general slang, slang in journalism and tabloid prints. American slang is very popular and is intelligible or used by the majority of American population, however it is not accepted as a formal usage. Slang is mostly used by men and the most popular slang expressions are connected to food. New York contributed to a great extent to slang about big cities and slang in general. The empirical part contains some basic information about the author J.D.Salinger and his work The Catcher in the Rye. Very important part of the empirical part is a chart which contains all the slang expressions from the novel and their definitions. Beside each slang expression there are also all the translations which can be found in both Slovene translations of the novel. Important is also the analysis of slang expressions and some of the most interesting examples or ideas on how some slang expression could be translated more accurately.

New approach to uncertainty evaluation in the calibration of gauge block comparators
Andrej Godina, Bojan Ačko, Marjan Družovec, 2007, izvirni znanstveni članek

Opis: Gauge blocks (GBs) are being calibrated by two methods: interferometric calibration and calibration by mechanical comparison to reference GB. While interferometric method represents primary level, comparison is more suitable for calibrating industrial GBs because of lower costs and shorter calibration time. Although no significant changes in equipment happened in last decade, improvements in mechanical comparison are on-going. In addition to the uncertainty of the reference GB calibration, uncertainty of the GB comparator is the most important contribution to total uncertainty of the mechanical calibration. The article introduces a new approach for evaluating the uncertainty of GB comparator calibration. The uncertainty budget and results of analytical and experimental evaluation of all contributions are presented. This approach results in lower end-effect uncertainty and a slightly higher length dependent uncertainty, in comparison with the uncertainty evaluation procedure as described in EA document EA-10/02.

Comparison of George Orwell’s novel Animal Farm and animation film Chicken Run
Tadeja Premrov, 2013, diplomsko delo

Opis: The aim of this thesis was to compare George Orwell’s novel Animal Farm and the animated film Chicken Run. The theme in both works is a rebellion, so I compared its reasons and consequences. I compared farms, farm owners, revolt managers (Napoleon and Ginger) and other characters, and lastly analyzed and compared both works as allegories. I came to the conclusion that both revolts were stimulated by masters’ evil characteristics and lack of care and kindness for animals. However, not both revolts ended with freedom and prosperity for animals. I highlighted the reasons for this discrepancy. The analysis of allegories showed that both, the novella and the film, use animal characters to construct an idea of how people were oppressed in the history, each highlighting a different part of European history.

NUMERICAL MODELING OF THE IMMERSION QUENCHING PROCESS USING AN EULERIAN MULTI-FLUID MODELING APPROACH
Rok Kopun, 2014, doktorska disertacija

Opis: Optimization of heat transfer characteristics in automotive industries is one of the more important factors leading to reductions in fuel consumption and lower emissions values. Efficient heat treatment techniques, like immersion quenching, have been introduced in order to replace heavier metals with lower weight alloys (aluminum), which results in vehicle weight reduction and consequently improved fuel consumption and emission values. Immersion quenching is one of the more important heat treatment techniques introduced in automotive industries, where heat transfer plays a vital role in determining the structure and mechanical properties of the material (e.g. the cylinder head). This presented PhD thesis deals with the development and validation of improved computational methodology in order to simulate the heat transfer characteristics of the immersion quenching cooling process, as implemented within the commercial computational fluid dynamics (CFD) code AVL FIRE®. The boiling phase change process between the heated part and a sub-cooled liquid domain is handled by using the Eulerian multi-fluid modeling approach, where each phase is treated as interpenetrating continua. While for the fluid domain mass, momentum and energy equations are solved within the content of the multi-fluid modeling approach, where only the energy equation is solved to predict the thermal field within the solid region. Result comparisons between the measurements and corresponding numerical simulations using the variable Leidenfrost temperature with additional interfacial forces showed very good agreement. The comparisons were performed on an aluminum step-plate test piece with different thicknesses along its length and on a simplified aluminum cylinder head structure. The specimens were submerged within the liquid domain at different pool temperatures and different solid part orientations, where the solid temperature histories predicted by the numerical model correlated very well with the provided measurement data.

A STYLISTIC AND THEMATIC COMPARISON BETWEEN TOUCHING THE VOID BY JOE SIMPSON AND DAVID BY EARLE BIRNEY
Ana Suvajčević, 2016, diplomsko delo

Opis: The theme of my thesis is a stylistic and thematic comparison between Touching the Void by Joe Simpson and David by Earle Birney. Both works have surprisingly similar themes, so the purpose of the thesis was to find out where they are contiguous, where they diverge, and what are the reasons for this. Since both the poem and the narrative are unique masterpieces, some elements and the reasons for their appearance were sometimes surprising. Firstly, the analysis of morphology of each work was made separately – its themes, symbols, inner and outer forms, which include structure, style and rhythm. In a separate chapter both works, their elements and reason for divergences and similarities were compared and interpreted once again.

Stylistic comparison of the original and Slovene translation of Douglas Adams's The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy
Jure Cehner, 2015, diplomsko delo

Opis: An author's style can sometimes be as important as the content itself. One could argue it is one of the fundamental components in fiction, and it can make or break a good book. However, as much as we enjoy it, it can be hard to define. We know it is present and it can make us feel a range of emotions, but what causes the emotions on a linguistic level is not easily answered. Douglas Adams’ novel The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy is a mixture of science fiction and comedy. Comedic effect is prevalent throughout the book and is achieved by several linguistic devices. The optimal way to study one’s writing style is to break it down in to smaller components, and in the case of this thesis to proper names, nonce words and several figures of speech. Alojz Kodre, the Slovene translator of the book, holds a Master’s degree in Physics, therefore I assumed he was more capable of bringing the astronomical concepts and technical jargon to the Slovene reader than a translator with no knowledge of astrophysics. The purpose of my thesis was also to find out whether he had been successful at not only accurately conveying meaning but also Adams’s unique style. Not taking into account his many stylistic elements can be detrimental for the overall reading experience. The discrepancies were highlighted with skopos theory as a basis for adequacy of translations methods, both used or methods that could have been used. The skopos theory helps the translator achieve the purpose of the translation usually defined by the target audience. It is a universal theory, but I was interested whether skopos theory can be applied to style as well. The translation must serve the readership of the target culture, but the author’s style, especially if prominent such as Adams’s, should not be put in second place. To some extent the translator also needs to be faithful to the author, but where does he need to draw the line? Occasionally, one factor needs to be sacrificed; whether the author’s style for the sake of understandability or the understandability for the sake of style. Alojz Kodre seemed to favour purpose over form; sometimes for clear reasons, because preserving the author’s style would have made the translation less comprehendible, and sometimes for less obvious reasons. It is evident that the artistic aspect of the novel was not the translator’s primary concern. He, however, had very little problems with conveying the intended meaning to the target readership.

COMPARISON OF MYSQL, NEO4J AND APACHE HIVE DATABASE MANAGEMENT SYSTEMS
Matjaž Moser, 2016, magistrsko delo/naloga

Opis: In this work a comparison of three different database management systems (DBMS) is presented. In general a relational data model with a graph data model is compared. The three systems used are MySQL, Neo4j and Apache Hive. Neo4j is a member of the NoSQL database family and is a well-known graph database. The relational databases used in this work are MySQL and Apache Hive. The latter is not a classic relational model but since it is modelled as such it can be considered relational. MySQL is a well-known solution that has been on the market for several years now and is a standard solution for many data problems. Within this work a detailed comparison of all three systems from different aspects of usage is made, both from our own experience as well as from preliminary research from other authors and sources. Additionally some practical information from our dataset with some simple mining techniques is extracted and the result of our work is visualised in an interactive web side using modern approaches to data visualisation.

A comparison of comprehension processes in sign language interpreter videos with or without captions
Ines Kožuh, Matjaž Debevc, Danijela Milošević, 2015, izvirni znanstveni članek

Opis: One important theme in captioning is whether the implementation of captions in individual sign language interpreter videos can positively affect viewers% comprehension when compared with sign language interpreter videos without captions. In our study, an experiment was conducted using four video clips with information about everyday events. Fifty-one deaf and hard of hearing sign language users alternately watched the sign language interpreter videos with, and without, captions. Afterwards, they answered ten questions. The results showed that the presence of captions positively affected their rates of comprehension, which increased by 24% among deaf viewers and 42% among hard of hearing viewers. The most obvious differences in comprehension between watching sign language interpreter videos with and without captions were found for the subjects of hiking and culture, where comprehension was higher when captions were used. The results led to suggestions for the consistent use of captions in sign language interpreter videos in various media.

Process quality indicators in family medicine
Danica Rotar-Pavlič, Maja Sever, Zalika Klemenc-Ketiš, Igor Švab, 2015, izvirni znanstveni članek

Opis: Background: The aim of our study was to describe variability in process quality in family medicine among 31 European countries plus Australia, New Zealand, and Canada. The quality of family medicine was measured in terms of continuity, coordination, community orientation, and comprehensiveness of care. Methods: The QUALICOPC study (Quality and Costs of Primary Care in Europe) was carried out among family physicians in 31 European countries (the EU 27 except for France, plus Macedonia, Iceland, Norway, Switzerland, and Turkey) and three non-European countries (Australia, Canada, and New Zealand). We used random sampling when national registers of practitioners were available. Regional registers or lists of facilities were used for some countries. A standardized questionnaire was distributed to the physicians, resulting in a sample of 6734 participants. Data collection took place between October 2011 and December 2013. Based on completed questionnaires, a three-dimensional framework was established to measure continuity, coordination, community orientation, and comprehensiveness of care. Multilevel linear regression analysis was performed to evaluate the variation of quality attributable to the family physician level and the country level. Results: None of the 34 countries in this study consistently scored the best or worst in all categories. Continuity of care was perceived by family physicians as the most important dimension of quality. Some components of comprehensiveness of care, including medical technical procedures, preventive care and health care promotion, varied substantially between countries. Coordination of care was identified as the weakest part of quality. We found that physician-level characteristics contributed to the majority of variation. Conclusions: A comparison of process quality indicators in family medicine revealed similarities and differences within and between countries. The researchers found that the major proportion of variation can be explained by physicians' characteristics.

Management practices utilization in organizations
Zlatko Nedelko, Vojko Potočan, 2016, objavljeni znanstveni prispevek na konferenci

Opis: The main purpose of this paper is to examine the utilization of management practices in catching-up and well-developed economies. Within that framework, the paper examines the utilization of management practices in Slovenian and Croatian organizations, as both are considered the representatives of catching-up economies from Central and East Europe (CEE), while also comparing the utilization of management practices in the two selected economies to the global use of management practices. Evidences about management practices utilization reveal that in well-developed economies in the forefront are management practices aiming to support customer relationship management, strength customer relations and customer satisfaction, while in Slovenia and Croatia prevail practices that are oriented toward optimization of the business and its processes. Based on the research results and the situation in organizations, a possible future pattern of management practice utilization in organizations operating in catching up economies is outlined, with the aim to reduce the developmental lag and increase competitiveness of those organizations. The paper also provides several practical implications for future utilization of management practices in catching-up economies. The sample of catching up-countries includes 155 responses from employees in Slovenian organizations and 185 from Croatian ones. Data for samples from well-developed economies are obtained from a global survey of management practices.
