From zero to one: a new perspective on the fuzzy front end of innovation and the Stage-Gate® model
Peter Alešnik, Igor Vrečko, Iztok Palčič, 2025, izvirni znanstveni članek

Opis: The Stage-Gate® model has historically provided a systematic framework for New Product Development (NPD). However, the evolving landscape of innovation necessitates continuous enhancement. This paper redefines the model's foundational structure by advocating for the recognition of the Discovery Phase as Stage 1, emphasizing its essential role in aligning initial ideation with strategic goals, streamlining processes, and enhancing NPD efforts. Using a mixed-methods approach, including a systematic literature review, synthesis of illustrative examples and secondary data and case study analysis, the research demonstrates that formalizing the Discovery Phase improves earlystage decision-making, enhances alignment between front-end exploration and downstream execution and mitigates risks by supporting more informed project development. Synthesised sectoral examples show that incorporating the Discovery Phase improves feasibility, reduces risk, and boosts efficiency. For example, simulation planning early in innovation process increased manufacturing throughput by 52 %, while early IP checks lowered infringement risk. The proposed revision boosts the Stage-Gate® model's adaptability and integration with modern methodologies such as AI, Agile, Lean Startup, Design Thinking and TRIZ. The findings highlight how this change promotes a comprehensive approach to NPD. The implications extend to practical applications and future research, offering organizations a flexible framework that meets modern market and technological demands.

Bioinspired design of ergonomic tool handles using 3D-printed cellular metamaterials
Gregor Harih, Vasja Plesec, 2025, izvirni znanstveni članek

Opis: The design of ergonomic tool handles is crucial for user comfort and performance, yet conventional stiff materials often lead to uneven pressure distribution and discomfort. This study investigates the application of 3D-printed cellular metamaterials with tunable stiffness, specifically gyroid structures, to enhance the ergonomic and haptic properties of tool handles. We employed finite element analysis to simulate finger–handle interactions and conducted subjective comfort evaluations with participants using a foxtail saw with handles of varying gyroid infill densities and a rigid PLA handle. Numerical results demonstrated that handles with medium stiffness significantly reduced peak contact pressures and promoted a more uniform pressure distribution compared to the stiff PLA handle. The softest gyroid handle, while compliant, exhibited excessive deformation, potentially compromising stability. Subjective comfort ratings corroborated these findings, with medium-stiffness handles receiving the highest scores for overall comfort, fit, and force transmission. These results highlight that a plateau-like mechanical response of the 3D-printed cellular metamaterial handle, inversely bioinspired by human soft tissue, effectively balances pressure redistribution and grip stability. This bioinspired design approach offers a promising direction for developing user-centered products that mitigate fatigue and discomfort in force-intensive tasks.

Experiences as heuristics for geothermal public perception : testing the correlation between thermal waters recreation and geothermal energy perception
Maja Turnšek, Katja Kokot, 2025, izvirni znanstveni članek

Opis: This research focuses on the question of how geothermal energy public perception is formed within a national context where news media do not pay attention to geothermal energy, and there is no active opposition to geothermal energy. The research builds on theoretical underpinnings of heuristics in energy perceptions and highlights the importance of physical experiences and associations as sources of experiential learning. Through a survey conducted among members of the general public in Slovenia, the role of thermal water recreation in shaping public perception of geothermal energy is empirically tested. The results show that, in this context, geothermal energy is highly positively assessed compared to hydro energy and nuclear energy, and that there is a correlation between frequency of thermal recreation and certain aspects of public perception of geothermal energy. The policy implications go beyond the simple recommendation of including tourism in public awareness campaigns but point to the specific vulnerability of energy acceptance in this context, where perceptions are formed based on “thinking fast”, and where the media and the public discourse on geothermal energy have not (yet) considered the potential risks and opposition to geothermal projects.

Simulation-based modelling of migration flows on the Balkan route : a contribution to the development of European migration policies
Igor Bernik, Blaž Rodič, 2025, izvirni znanstveni članek

Opis: Migration flows along the Balkan Route since 2015 have revealed structural weaknesses in the European Union’s migration governance and highlighted the need for new, evidence-based approaches. This paper presents the MIG@B project, which develops an integrated simulation model of migration by combining agent-based modelling (ABM), system dynamics (SD), and discrete-event simulation (DES), supported by Bayesian methods for managing uncertainty. The model addresses both micro-level decision-making among migrants and macro-level feedback loops between policies and public opinion, as well as operational challenges related to border flows and asylum capacities. The approach contributes to the design of coordinated and sustainable EU and Slovenian migration policies, aligning with the New Pact on Migration and Asylum [1] and Slovenia’s Migration Strategy 2023–2030 [2]. The expected contribution is threefold: scientific innovation through methodological integration, political usability by providing scenario-based testing of policy measures, and normative relevance through alignment with European solidarity and human rights values. The MIG@B framework exemplifies how simulation modelling can serve as a laboratory for migration policy, enabling transparent, robust, and data-driven decision-making.

Razpad metilen modrega v pretočnem fotokemijskem mikroreaktorju : diplomsko delo
Laura Žajdela, 2025, diplomsko delo

Opis: V diplomskem delu preučujemo razgradnjo sintetičnega barvila metilen modro v vodni raztopini s pomočjo pretočnega fotokemijskega mikroreaktorja. Namen raziskave je bil določiti optimalne pogoje procesa, ki omogočajo čim višjo učinkovitost čiščenja ob čim nižji porabi energije. Ker se metilen modro pogosto uporablja v tekstilni in farmacevtski industriji, njegova prisotnost v odpadnih vodah predstavlja pomemben okoljski problem.

Communication with disabled fans at sports events : approaches, challenges, and opportunities
Martin Koželj, Iztok Podbregar, Maja Meško, Irena Nančovska Šerbec, 2025, izvirni znanstveni članek

Opis: This study investigates how effectively European football clubs communicate and implement accessibility features for disabled fans, aiming to develop a comprehensive framework for evaluating these practices. Using a multi-phase research design, the study analyzes disability support systems through semi-structured interviews with representatives from eleven European football clubs and a systematic analysis of club documentation. The methodology combined traditional qualitative analysis with large language model (LLM)-assisted content analysis, enabling robust identification of thematic patterns and performance indicators. Our findings reveal significant disparities in disability support practices, with larger clubs demonstrating structured approaches through dedicated Disability Access Officers (DAOs) and comprehensive communication strategies. Analysis identified three distinct performance tiers: Elite Performers, primarily well-resourced clubs with advanced systems; Solid Performers, mid-tier clubs with established frameworks; and Developing Systems, smaller organizations with emerging support structures. We present a validated Fan Communication Model incorporating key weighted criteria, including infrastructure, dedicated personnel, engagement, specific adaptations, ticketing, challenge management, and feedback systems. This model provides a standardized framework for evaluating disability support communication in football organizations. The research demonstrates the importance of integrating technological solutions with human-centered approaches while maintaining universal design principles. Our findings contribute to the sports accessibility literature and provide evidence-based recommendations for football organizations seeking to enhance their communication with disabled fans.

Enhancing racking stiffness in tall timber buildings using double-skin façades : a numerical investigation
Erika Kozem Šilih, Miroslav Premrov, 2025, izvirni znanstveni članek

Opis: The main goal of the paper is to present possible benefits in application of previously developed innovative in-plane load-bearing timber double-skin façade elements (DSF) as additional bracing elements in tall timber buildings. Therefore, a six-storey prefabricated timber structure of a height of 15 m and with a regular floor-plan is analysed by a seismic excitation of ag = 0.225 · g with a strong asymmetrical position of transparent façade elements. Two structural solutions are analysed: a hybrid system combining CLT and Light Timber-Framed walls and a non-hybrid structure made entirely of CLT. In both cases, DSF elements are first considered non-resisting and later as racking-resisting bracing elements. Numerical results show that using racking-resisting DSF elements in a hybrid system (CLT+LTF) achieves a similar increase in overall racking stiffness as a non-hybrid CLT structure with non-resisting DSF. Previous studies highlight hybrid timber systems as the preferred approach due to structural, energy-efficient, and ecological advantages. This finding is significant, offering practical benefits and new design opportunities for modern tall timber buildings with asymmetrical transparent façades, improving both energy efficiency and interior illumination in contemporary prefabricated structures.

Tourism-driven economies and income disparity : insights from a regression discontinuity design
Zdravko Šergo, Jasmina Gržinić, Anita Ilak-Peršurić, 2024, izvirni znanstveni članek

Opis: This paper aims to answer two questions: (1) Does overtourism incline countries to favorise the capital asset holder instead of workers in income distribution? (2) Does income inequality come hand in hand with overtourism? Employing Kaldor's theory of income distribution, this study adapts its theoretical framework to assess countries with a specialization in tourism. The analysis encompasses data from 115 developed countries over the period of 2000 to 2019. A Regression Discontinuity Design (RDD) methodology is utilized for the empirical investigation, categorizing key variables based on the exposure of a country's unit to a tourism-focused developmental strategy. The study reveals that adopting overtourism as a developmental strategy has led to increased inequality, characterized by a rising capital share and a declining labor share over time. Evidence supporting these findings is presented through both parametric and non-parametric Regression Discontinuity Design (RDD) analyses. Robustness checks and placebo tests corroborate these results.
