2. No way out for climate refugees’ asylum applications in court decisions and conventionsNuray Ekşi, 2023, izvirni znanstveni članek Opis: One major consequence of climate change is the migration problem caused by internal and international displacement of people due to environmental disasters. The cross-border effects of climate-induced displacement have naturally sparked novel debates in the field of refugee law, and has created a group of people commonly called ‘climate refugees’. Climate refugees do not necessarily fall within the definition of ‘refugee’ under the 1951 Geneva Convention. While certain states and international organisations, including the UN, approach the situation of climate refugees solely from a security point of view, others see these people as victims of climate-induced disasters. No country is truly willing to share the burden caused by the climate-induced mass migration or address the full extent of this major phenomenon. Moreover, the international agreements on which they base their asylum claims fail to adequately address the circumstances surrounding their requests. Differing opinions have been expressed in academia as to the appropriate protection mechanisms and assistance that can be provided to climate refugees. In article, we explain the differences between the conventional refugees and climate refugees, discuss the reasons why the existing international conventions fail to protect climate refugees, and highlight the proposed solutions for the protection of such refugees. 3. Climate change and air pollution : the twin threats to children’s health and well-beingElijah Sriroshan Sritharan, 2025, izvirni znanstveni članek Opis: Environmental factors, such as air pollution and climate change, significantly contribute to the global burden of disease and are critical to understanding health disparities between countries, with low- and middle-income nations facing the highest environmental health burdens across various diseases and injuries. While health is universally acknowledged as both a fundamental human need and a basic human right, yet the harmful effects of unhealthy environments disproportionately impact children. Research indicates that pre- and post-natal exposures to environmental toxicants can disrupt brain and lung development, impairing their function. These health impacts are distributed unequally, with marginalised populations experiencing greater harm. The IPCC identifies fossil fuel combustion as the primary driver of climate change. Epidemiological studies further highlight the existing and future consequences of climate change, including its effects on infectious diseases, cardiovascular and pulmonary diseases, and mental well-being. 4. Communicating the climate crisis : stories in the classroomNastja Prajnč Kacijan, Bernarda Leva, Barbara Majcenovič Kline, David Hazemali, Tjaša Mohar, Katja Plemenitaš, Tomaž Onič, Kirsten Hempkin, 2025, samostojni znanstveni sestavek ali poglavje v monografski publikaciji Opis: As the climate crisis escalates, educators find themselves frequently having to engage with this issue in a classroom context. A significant contribution that educators, especially language teachers, can make is connected to communicating about environmental questions and helping learners develop the critical skills and competences to engage with such questions fully. In this contribution, we present a series of tasks drawing upon the medium of stories – both fiction and non-fiction, for younger and older learners – which are designed to develop a number of key competences: enhance vocabulary in English relating to climate issues; develop awareness of the key themes regarding these issues; increase learners' critical thinking (regarding the use of language specifically) concerning information available on climate change and related issues. 5. Speaking climate : how translators make environmental language workSara Orthaber, Aleksandra Nuč Blažič, 2025, samostojni znanstveni sestavek ali poglavje v monografski publikaciji Opis: Climate change is a global challenge that demands informed action. One major barrier to public engagement is the difficulty in understanding specialised environmental terminology. In Slovenia, as in other countries, improving environmental literacy is essential for supporting sustainable practices and the green transition. This study explores how climate-related terms are translated from English into Slovenian, focusing on the behind the-scenes processes of meaning-making. It examines how Slovenian translators address terminological challenges through collaboration in online professional groups, where terminology is co-constructed through expert discussions. These informal exchanges play a key role in clarifying ambiguity and ensuring accurate, context-sensitive translations. Although official glossaries offer standardised terms, the cognitive work and decision-making that support them often remain invisible. This research highlights the translators’ crucial role in making climate discourse accessible, thus promoting understanding and enabling greater public engagement in sustainability efforts. 7. Framing of sea level rise in news headlines : a study of The Guardian and The New York TimesTjaša Mohar, Nastja Prajnč Kacijan, Kirsten Hempkin, Bernarda Leva, Tomaž Onič, Barbara Majcenovič Kline, David Hazemali, Katja Plemenitaš, 2025, samostojni znanstveni sestavek ali poglavje v monografski publikaciji Opis: The deepening of the environmental crisis brings an increased need for clear and targeted communication about environmental issues, leading to greater environmental awareness and encouraging the necessary changes in people’s behaviour. The way the media frames reports on environmental issues, such as climate change, plays a crucial role in the efficient communication of these issues. This paper examines how sea level rise was reported in the digital editions of The Guardian and The New York Times in 2022, utilizing framing theory – a theory that is used in textual linguistics to study texts on socially important topics in public discourse. The study identifies the predominant generic frames in the headlines and subheads of these articles, which are the key framing locations. A comparative analysis also reveals differences in the framing of sea level rise in the two newspapers. 8. Predicting wine quality under changing climate : An integrated approach combining machine learning, statistical analysis, and systems thinkingMaja Borlinič Gačnik, Andrej Škraba, Karmen Pažek, Črtomir Rozman, 2025, izvirni znanstveni članek Opis: Climate change poses significant challenges for viticulture, particularly in regions known for producing high-quality wines. Wine quality results from a complex interaction between climatic factors, regional characteristics, and viticultural practices. Methods: This study integrates statistical analysis, machine learning (ML) algorithms, and systems thinking to assess the extent to which wine quality can be predicted using monthly weather data and regional classification. The dataset includes average wine scores, monthly temperatures and precipitation, and categorical region data for Slovenia between 2011 and 2021. Predictive models tested include Random Forest, Support Vector Machine, Decision Tree, and linear regression. In addition, Causal Loop Diagrams (CLDs) were constructed to explore feedback mechanisms and systemic dynamics. Results: The Random Forest model showed the highest prediction accuracy (R2 = 0.779). Regional classification emerged as the most influential variable, followed by temperatures in September and April. Precipitation did not have a statistically significant effect on wine ratings. CLD models revealed time delays in the effects of adaptation measures and highlighted the role of perceptual lags in growers’ responses to climate signals. Conclusions: The combined use of ML, statistical methods, and CLDs enhances understanding of how climate variability influences wine quality. This integrated approach offers practical insights for winegrowers, policymakers, and regional planners aiming to develop climate-resilient viticultural strategies. Future research should include phenological phase modeling and dynamic simulation to further improve predictive accuracy and system-level understanding. 10. Transformative dynamics of the economy of Kosovo : a perspective on history and development of foreign direct investmentJeton Zogjani, Fife Kovaci-Uruci, Agon Zogjani, 2024, izvirni znanstveni članek Opis: This paper presents an in-depth overview of foreign direct investments (FDI) in Kosovo's economy over more than twenty years. FDI has played a central role, proving indispensable to the development of Kosovo's economy. Thus, FDI is primarily directed towards economic activities like real estate, finance, manufacturing, construction, etc. In terms of the legal framework, Kosovo has approved a range of regulations and laws with the primary goal of protecting, attracting and encouraging foreign investors to invest. However, obstacles such as political instability, energy insecurity, delayed EU integration, and regional political tensions are recognized as the main barriers affecting FDI in Kosovo. Finally, Kosovo should develop suitable policies to boost its investment competitiveness, attract multinational enterprises for investment opportunities, and prioritize less attractive economic sectors for investment of FDI.
