1. Career aspirations of Slovenian ninth graders : the influence of personal factors and attitudes towards engineering professionsMateja Ploj Virtič, Igor Košak, Andrej Šorgo, 2025, izvirni znanstveni članek Opis: The study examines the career aspirations of Slovenian ninth-grade students and analyses how these are influenced by personal factors and their attitudes towards engineering professions. Regression analyses on a sample of 779 students show that interest in outdoor work is a significant predictor of engineering career aspirations across all educational levels. Physical demands positively influence aspirations for engineering occupations requiring secondary or elementary education, while intellectual demands and employment opportunities encourage interest in engineering occupations at the tertiary level. A positive perception of engineering professions as interesting is a key factor for all levels of education. The results emphasise the importance of fostering interest in technical careers. 2. Which positive view of general practice do medical students and trainees have? : a systematic literature reviewBernard Le Floch, Hilde Bastiaens, Jean-Yves Le Reste, Heidrun Lingner, Robert Hoffman, Radost Spiridonova Assenova, Tuomas Koskela, Zalika Klemenc-Ketiš, P. Nabbe, T Montier, Lieve Peremans, 2020, pregledni znanstveni članek Opis: Background: Despite several studies focusing on the negative aspects of general medicine, the speciality seems attractive for students. Researchers from the European General Practice Research Network created a group to study job satisfaction in general practice. The aim of this eight-country European study was to determine which positive view students have about general practice.
Method: Systematic review of the literature from Pubmed, Embase and Cochrane databases. Articles published between 01/01/2000 and 12/31/2018 were searched and analysed by two researchers working blind. The data on satisfaction factors were extracted from the full text article used as verbatims. Then the data were coded with a thematic analysis.
Results: 24 articles out of 414 were selected. Satisfaction factors were classified: teaching of general practice, workplace and organisational freedom, quality of life, variety in practice, workload balance and income. The analysis highlighted intellectual stimulation and the relationship built with patients and other professionals.
Conclusion: Literature on the appeal of general practice for students revealed many factors of job satisfaction in general practice. It is possible to create a global view of a satisfied GP on the students' opinion. Courses and clerkships in general practice with positive rolemodels are determining factors in career choice. 4. Employers’ efforts to encourage older workers to retire later : a case study of large companies in SloveniaVesna Novak, Anja Vidmar, Janja Jerebic, Alenka Brezavšček, 2023, izvirni znanstveni članek Opis: Background and Purpose: Most developed societies are facing the challenge of an ageing population, which poses several issues, including low labour force participation and financial pressures on the sustainability of the pension system. Countries typically address this situation by raising the retirement age, which often results in dissatisfaction among workers as such decisions are perceived as imposed. Therefore, our work’s main purpose was to research the analysis of implementing measures for managing older workers in companies, which would indirectly influence workers’ decisions to voluntarily choose longer work participation. Design/Methodology/Approach: We designed our study on the assumption that companies that more frequently conduct various analyses of their employees also pay greater attention to measures for managing older workers. In doing so, we focused on the measures that the literature identifies as important for keeping older workers employed for longer. The data source was a study from 2020, which sampled large companies in Slovenia with more than 100 employees. We posed the questions to the person responsible for human resource management in the company. The initial question was whether conducting employee analyses is associated with the implementation of measures focused on education and training, skills transfer, and career development as well as managing the health of older workers. We formulated three main hypotheses, which we confirmed using linear correlation analysis. Results: We found that companies that conduct more frequent analyses of employees’ qualifications and competencies, on average, also more frequently implement measures related to the area of education and training of older workers and to the area of knowledge transfer and career development of older workers. We confirmed statistically significant correlations in general as well as at the level of particular measures. Furthermore, we found that companies that more frequently conduct analyses of the health structure of employees, on average, also more frequently implement measures in the field of managing the health of older workers. We concluded that companies that conduct employee analyses more frequently demonstrate a higher level of commitment to implementing measures for managing older workers, which subsequently impacts their decision to retire later. Conclusion: By conducting employee analyses, companies gain important information that leads to the timely and sufficiently frequent implementation of measures for managing older employees. With empirical data, we have supported our prediction that the frequency of implementing measures through which companies can influence older workers’ decisions for later retirement is associated with the frequent conduction of employee analyses. This article has contributed to our understanding of ageing and the treatment of older workers. It has also highlighted a softer approach to promoting prolonged work engagement for older employees as an alternative to unwanted, legally imposed later retirement. 5. Preschool teachers’ conceptions of professional development in relation to career motivation and job satisfactionMojca Žveglič Mihelič, Milena Valenčič Zuljan, Romina Plešec Gasparič, 2025, izvirni znanstveni članek Opis: In this paper, we are interested in preschool teachers’ conceptions of professional
development in relation to their motives for choosing the profession and
professional satisfaction. Results of a study among 145 Slovenian preschool
teachers show that they generally have a positive conception of professional
development; nevertheless, recognition of the importance of learning and in-depth
reflection on this conception depend on career motivations, while a broader
conception of professional development increases the likelihood of thinking about
leaving the profession more frequently. The findings justify the need for better
recognition of preschool teachers’ needs and obstacles in the workplace. Ključne besede: professional development, conception of professional development, career motivation, job satisfaction, preschool teachers Objavljeno v DKUM: 24.07.2025; Ogledov: 0; Prenosov: 9

Aldousari, Maya Baltazar Herrera, 2025, izvirni znanstveni članek Opis: Drawing from status characteristics theory, we develop a multilevel model to explain the relationships between gender composition (e.g., female-female supervisor-subordinate dyads, a female majority at the next higher level, and a female majority at the same job level) in the workplace and women's career satisfaction. We hypothesise that working with a female supervisor and a female majority at the same level will be negatively related to women's career satisfaction, while a female majority at the next higher level will be positively related to women's career satisfaction. Moreover, we propose that formal societal (gender-equality) institutions and informal cultural (gender-egalitarian) values, each has a moderating effect on the impact of gender compositions on women's career satisfaction. Our results from a multilevel analysis of 2291 women across 35 societies support the three hypothesised main effects. Whereas institutions that support gender equality weaken the positive effect of working with a female majority at the next higher level, they amplify the negative effect of a female majority at the same hierarchical level. Our findings highlight the complex and paradoxical nature of gender composition effects on women's career satisfaction. We discuss the theoretical contributions of our findings and their implications for the diversity management practices of multinational enterprises. 7. Becoming a mother-athlete : female athletes' transition to motherhood in SloveniaJanja Usenik, Paul Wylleman, Saša Cecić Erpič, 2020, izvirni znanstveni članek Opis: Perceptions of incompatibility of sport and motherhood still exist within both sport and family Slovene cultures. For many female athletes starting a family means an end of their athletic careers. However, some women decide to pursue their athletic life after they become mothers. While recent media interest in mother-athletes has increased significantly, scientific research focusing on this topic is still scarce. The purpose of this study was to explore the transition of Slovene female athletes into motherhood and their experiences of combining motherhood with competitive sport. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with eight female elite athletes, who became mothers during their elite level competitive career. The results of the study revealed that mother-athletes perceived this transition as a long-term process in which motherhood and elite sport had a reciprocal effect on each other. Three transition phases characterized by changes in the participants’ holistic development were identified: (1) pre-pregnancy and pregnancy, (2) returning to competitive sport, and (3) living the life of a mother-athlete. 8. Lower secondary school experiences as predictors of career aspirations toward engineering, and production and processing occupationsMateja Ploj Virtič, Andrej Šorgo, 2022, izvirni znanstveni članek Opis: The global demand for technically educated persons is greater than the supply. It is believed that interest and school experience can influence career choice. 624 Slovenian high school students participated in the survey. Exploratory and Confirmatory Factorial Analysis procedures were used to investigate the influence of school and out-of-school-related factors on career aspirations. Predictors of career aspirations in (a) engineering and (b) production and processing occupations in the models were: (1) students’ opinions on technical topics, (2) the content of school subject Technics and Technology; and (3) related classroom experiences. The results of the models showed that career aspirations were explained by out-of-school generated opinions on technical topics and not by school-related factors. Boys are more enthusiastic than girls in their career aspirations for technically oriented occupations. This calls for a fundamental revision of the school subject and the corresponding teaching. 9. Universal productivity patterns in research careersAndre S. Sunahara, Matjaž Perc, Haroldo V. Ribeiro, 2023, izvirni znanstveni članek Opis: A common expectation is that career productivity peaks rather early and then gradually declines with seniority. But whether this holds true is still an open question. Here we investigate the productivity trajectories of almost 8500 scientists from over 50 disciplines using methods from time-series analysis, dimensionality reduction, and network science, showing that there exist six universal productivity patterns in research. Based on clusters of productivity trajectories and network representations where researchers with similar productivity patterns are connected, we identify constant, u-shaped, decreasing, periodic-like, increasing, and canonical productivity patterns, with the latter two describing almost three-fourths of researchers. In fact, we find that canonical curves are the most prevalent, but contrary to expectations, productivity peaks occur much more frequently around midcareer rather than early. These results outline the boundaries of possible career paths in science and caution against the adoption of stereotypes in tenure and funding decisions. 10. The impact of social and cultural norms, government programs and digitalization as entrepreneurial environment factors on job and career satisfaction of freelancersIvona Huđek, Polona Tominc, Karin Širec, 2021, izvirni znanstveni članek Opis: At the end of the last century, digital technology emergence enabled millions of people to compete globally by remotely offering their knowledge and skills. In addition, business processes are becoming fragmented into smaller components, so-called short-term projects. These work arrangements are often carried out by so-called independent professionals (contractors), better known as freelancers. A literature review has shown that the research topic of freelancing from an entrepreneurial perspective is relatively new and has its assumptions and gaps. Different stakeholders and institutions connect, mediate and manage the services of the entrepreneurial ecosystem to support entrepreneurs. As freelancers belong to the self-employed entrepreneurial category, they are engaged in business activities and need support from their environment. To contribute to this topic, we have analyzed the relationships between freelancers’ job and career satisfaction, digitalization and entrepreneurial ecosystem factors, with the aim of making policy recommendations. Regarding the entrepreneurial environment, we analyzed the cultural and social norms and government programs that provide support, based on the measurement instrument, developed in the Global Entrepreneurship Monitor (GEM) research. We surveyed 200 freelancers (respondents) in Slovenia. Using factor analysis and structural equation modelling, the empirical results suggest that digitalization and cultural and social norms are significant factors that promote the success of new careers as freelancers in terms of job and career satisfaction. The results show that both positively influence job and career satisfaction, while government programs indirectly influence the job and career satisfaction of freelancers. This explains how the entrepreneurial ecosystem, plays a special role in supporting freelancers on their career path.
