Fluid flow simulation with an ▫$ℋ^2$▫ -accelerated boundary-domain integral method
Jan Tibaut, Jure Ravnik, M Schanz, 2024, izvirni znanstveni članek

Opis: The development of new numerical methods for fluid flow simulations is challenging but such tools may help to understand flow problems better. Here, the Boundary-Domain Integral Method is applied to simulate laminar fluid flow governed by a dimensionless velocity–vorticity formulation of the Navier–Stokes equation. The Reynolds number is chosen in all examples small enough to ensure laminar flow conditions. The false transient approach is utilized to improve stability. As all boundary element methods, the Boundary-Domain Integral Method has a quadratic complexity. Here, the ℋ2 -methodology is applied to obtain an almost linear complexity. This acceleration technique is not only applied to the boundary only part but more important to the domain related part of the formulation. The application of the ℋ2 -methodology does not allow to use the rigid body method to determine the singular integrals and the integral free term as done until now. It is shown how to apply the technique of Guigiani and Gigante to handle the strongly singular integrals in this application. Further, a parametric study shows the influence of the introduced approximation parameters. For this purpose the example of a lid driven cavity is utilized. The second example demonstrates the performance of the proposed method by simulating the Hagen–Poiseuille flow in a pipe. The third example considers the flow around a rigid cylinder to show the behavior of the method for an unstructured grid. All examples show that the proposed method results in an almost linear complexity as the mathematical analysis promisses.

Improvement of biogas production utilizing a complex anaerobic digestion model and gradient-based optimization
Tina Kegl, Breda Kegl, Marko Kegl, 2024, izvirni znanstveni članek

Opis: : Anaerobic digestion (AD) is a promising technology for renewable energy production from organic waste. In order to maximize the produced biogas quantity and quality, this paper deals with the optimization of the AD process in a CSTR bioreactor of a full-scale biogas plant. For this purpose, a novel approach was adopted coupling, a highly complex BioModel for AD simulation, and a gradient-based optimization method. In order to improve AD performance, the dosages of various types of biological additives, the dosages of inorganic additives, and the temperature in the bioreactor were optimized in three different scenarios. The best biogas quality was obtained using multi-objective optimization, where the objective function involves the following two conflicting objectives: the maximization of biogas production and minimization of the needed heating energy. The obtained results show that, potentially, the content of CH4 can be increased by 11%, while the contents of H2, H2S, and NH3 can be reduced by 30%, 20%, and 81% when comparing the simulation results with the experimental data. The obtained results confirm the usefulness of the proposed approach, which can easily be adapted or upgraded for other bioreactor types.

3.
A simplified hybrid methodology for designing coreless axial flux machines
Franjo Pranjić, Peter Virtič, 2020, izvirni znanstveni članek

Opis: Axial flux permanent magnet generators (AFPMG) are used in many high torque applications, including wind generators. There are many design methodologies for AFPMG that are connected to simple design equations used for preliminary design. Analytical methods offer a fast preview of torque production of the designed machine with a certain degree of accuracy. The finite element method (FEM) is a more accurate numerical method than other methods and requires a great deal of time for simulations in the design procedure. This article presents a method for the design and analysis of an axial flux permanent magnet generator by using approximation polynomials.
