1. Participation in youth sports influences sarcopenia parameters in older adultsKaja Teraž, Miloš Kalc, Boštjan Šimunič, Uroš Marušič, Primož Pori, Saša Pišot, Rado Pišot, 2023, izvirni znanstveni članek Opis: Background: The degree of deterioration in sarcopenia parameters may be affected by a person’s level of physical activity (PA) and sedentary behavior (SB). Our study focused on examining the PA and SB of active older adults including those with and without history of sports in youth.
Methods: Forty-four participants (20 men and 24 women, mean age of total sample 76.1 ± 5.2 years) were included in analysis of PA, SB habits and sarcopenia parameters, determined by skeletal muscle index, hand-grip strength, gait speed, Timed Up and Go tests (TUG). PA and SB were recorded with accelerometers. Our primary aim was to compare participants with (AH) or without a sport history in youth (NAH), in their sarcopenia parameters and PA and SB habits.
Results: When divided participants in two groups (AH and NAH) and adjusting for age, we have detected the differences for skeletal muscle index (p = 0.007) and hand-grip strength (p = 0.004) in favor of participants who were engaged in sports in youth. We did not find any differences in PA and SB habits between the AH and NAH groups. After adjusting for age, participants with a higher number of daily steps, longer moderate to vigorous physical activity (MVPA) bouts, a higher number of MVPA bouts in a day and higher overall MVPA engagement achieved better results in hand-grip strength and TUG. Participants with lower SB had better TUG and gait speed results.
Conclusions: Our findings suggest that engaging in sports activities in youth can make a difference with sarcopenia parameters. Although we found no differences in PA and SB habits between participants with AH and NAH, participants with an athlete history performed better results in sarcopenia parameters. 2. Motives of retirement-aged workers and the importance of doing, being, becoming, and belonging : a systematic review of qualitative studiesUrša Bratun, Eric Asaba, Joca Zurc, 2022, izvirni znanstveni članek Opis: Background: Although extended work activity is often associated with active and healthy ageing, it meets with a polarized response. Studying workers’ lived experience may provide important insights into their motives for working beyond typical retirement age.
Objective: This systematic review aims to explore why people who could retire continue to work and applies the dimensions of doing, being, becoming, and belonging to describe prolonged participation in work.
Methods: Our search strategy followed the guidelines of the Centre for Reviews and Dissemination (CRD, Citation2009). Original studies were identified from databases CINAHL, Web of Science, Business Source Premier, ERIC, and ProQuest. Data were analyzed from the perspective of doing, being, becoming, belonging. A thematic synthesis was applied to summarize key motives.
Results: Eleven qualitative studies met the inclusion criteria and achieved the quality criteria of the The Qualitative Assessment Research Instrument. Eight motives were identified that were associated with extrinsic and intrinsic motivational factors. Health was a theme of salience and was both a prerequisite for work and an important motivator in itself. The dimensions of doing, being, becoming, belonging emerged in the description of workers’ motives and formed an interwoven selection of motives that included achievement, positive relationships, helping others, and enjoying work. Conclusion: Retirement-aged workers appear to be a poorly represented population in the scientific literature on work motives. The main findings indicate that workers who prolong labour activity experience work as much more than the act of ‘doing’ or acquiring additional financial resources. This urges us to include the dimensions of ‘being, becoming, belonging’ into contemporary age management. 3. The degree of deterioration of the tunnels of the Prague Metro based on a monitoring assessmentIvan Vaníček, Martin Vaníček, 2007, izvirni znanstveni članek Opis: Understanding the ageing of structures is a very important issue from the point of view of assessing the risk inherent in those structures. Geotechnical structures, of course, have their own specific risks. This paper is focused on the tunnels of the Prague Metro, looked at from various aspects, i.e., geology, construction systems, and the influence of flooding. The section of the tunnels that was selected for monitoring is one of the most affected, and has a large system of cracked segments. However, even for this affected section the monitoring systems, based on macro- and micro-approaches, showed no significant deterioration was taking place. Nevertheless, for long-term monitoring a wireless system for data collection and transfer was installed and implemented. The results so far have been very positive. 4. The demographic ageing of population in Bosnia and Herzegovina : causes and consequencesAlma Kadušić, Alija Suljić, Nedima Smajić, 2016, izvirni znanstveni članek Opis: In this paper the age structure and the ageing population process in Bosnia and Herzegovina in the second half of the 20th century and the beginning of the 21st century is analyzed. The main reasons that caused changes in the age composition of the population and the population ageing in Bosnia and Herzegovina have been researched. The main causes of the population ageing in Bosnia and Herzegovina in the second half of the 20th century were primarily trends in fertility rates and secondarily trends in mortality rates. The economic growth of Bosnia and Herzegovina after World War II conditioned changes in the economic and educational structure of the population and with that the changes in the natural increase rates and migration balance. The war was the main cause of negative demographic changes in Bosnia and Herzegovina in the period from 1992 to 1995, and the post-war adverse socioeconomic, political and other circumstances have been the cause of negative demographic trends after 1995. The aim of this paper is to determine the level of population ageing in Bosnia and Herzegovina and the consequences this process could have on the demographic future of this country. 5. Population aging and changes in the age structure of SlovakiaSlavomír Bucher, 2012, izvirni znanstveni članek Opis: The age group structure of the population in the districts of Slovakia was highlighted by means of an analysis of the three big age groups: 0 – 19 years, 20 – 64 years and 65 years and older. The paper reports on the development of the characteristics of the burden carried by the productive population in consequence of the demographic ageing of population in the conditions of the Slovakian regions. The main task of the paper was the identification the tendencies in age structure of Slovak population. Statistical methods and mathematics proceeding are used to compare different parameters age structure (e. g. index of ageing, youth dependency ratio etc.). That can be the ageing process as well as the forming of the population age structure considered as a demographical phenomenon with a fairly high degree of complexity. The results of the study will enhance the knowledge about demographic characteristics of Slovakia and therefore might be useful for further research in the field. 6. Impact of population ageing on unemployment and entrepreneurial activity : the case of SloveniaMarjetka Troha, Žiga Čepar, 2015, izvirni znanstveni članek Opis: The main aim of the research was to identify the elements of a suitable organisational educational model for tourism in Slovenia. Our research was based on the need of inner circular reflexive performance of the individual in the tourism education model, institutionalised concept of education, which is viewed by outer reflexive model of tourism educational institutions performance and functional practical interaction of individuals and tourism institutions at the development of innovative potentials in the field of tourism. Tendencies to develop complex and qualitative services coming from permanent strengthening of innovative potential of tourism services are common in this field. It is necessary to develop a suitable model in the field of tourism education that places an individual in the educational process taking into account his/her conscious reflection, rational reflection and acquired motivation for solving complex projects in various levels of tourism. Suitable tourism education model, which is level-structured, is expanded in two ways. It includes the active role of an individual in rationalising practical knowledge and strengthening the innovative potential in developing his/her competences, and the role of tourism education institutions. The organisational cultural dimension can be observed as dual activity structure distinguishing between conscious reflection of the external environment on the level of educational institution and internal practical consciousness on the level of individual development of competences. Giddens structuration theory is used as a conceptual frame explaining the organisational-cultural dimensions of suitably structured educational model for tourism in Slovenia. The conclusion is based on the fact that an individual does not acknowledge the multilevel structure of study at higher education where there is an absence of conscious, practical and motivational reflection. Organisational cultural environment in the field of tourism education in Slovenia prefers practical and functional ways of acquiring competences on a higher and postgraduate (Master’s) level of study. Due to the structured changes implemented by the Bologna process, competences are not realised on the higher education level but on the postgraduate (Master’s) level, which demands a systematic review and a suitable education model change. 8. Mott-Peierls phase in deuterated copper-DCNQI systems: a comprehensive study of longitudinal and transverse conductivity and ageing effectsMarko Pinterić, Tomislav Vuletić, Martin Lončarić, Konstantin Petukhov, Boris Gorshunov, Jost Ulrich von Schütz, Silvija Tomić, Martin Dressel, 2003, izvirni znanstveni članek Opis: Transport and low-frequency optical reflection measurements (180-380 GHz) are reported for the quasi-three-dimensional conducting alloy ▫$Cu[(2,5(CH_3)_2-DCNQI)_{0.70}(2,5(CD_3)_2-DCNQI)_{0.30}]_2$▫ between room temperature and 35 K. The optical properties of the system are strongly anisotropic. It is metallic down to 60 K where a Mott-Peierls phase transition occurs. While the transverse conductivity remains practically unchanged, the longitudinal conductivity abruptly drops at the phase transition. Comparing our latest results with previous dc data and measurements of the microwave conductivity also reported here, we find indications of an ageing effect in these samples. 9. Detecting and analysing condition of hydraulic oils with on-line sensorsVito Tič, Darko Lovrec, 2011, izvirni znanstveni članek Opis: On-line condition monitoring of the entire system or individual components can be used for detection of impending system break-down. The on-line monitoring of the state of hydraulic system and fluid plays a decisive role in general on-line condition monitoring. Friction, wear, leakage and excessive temperatures all have impact on lubricating properties of the oil. Apart from this, the oil its self is prone to aging and deterioration processes, which can also result in corrosion and equipment failures. The oil condition can be understood as a fingerprint of the condition of the complete system. Due to a widespread availability of robust and cost-effective on-line sensors for measuring various fluid properties, latest developments deal with on-line oil condition monitoring to determine the condition of hydraulic system and fluid. This allows for maintenance work to be carried out based on the detected system condition.
