Classroom design as a way of motivating students for artistic activities
Janja Batič, Petra Lebar Kac, 2025, samostojni znanstveni sestavek ali poglavje v monografski publikaciji

Opis: In this chapter, we present the results of a case study that we conducted to discover how the equipment and space of a design in a universal classroom can encourage students' spontaneous artistic expression. The study included fifth-grade students and their generalist teacher. In the 2022-2023 school year, pupils were offered an art station that included various art materials and art challenges. We aimed to determine how students would utilize the space for artistic expression, their approach to selecting art materials, and their attitude toward art activities outside of art classes. Data were collected by analysing the teacher's observation diary, photographs of the art works, and student surveys. The results showed that the art station was very well received by the students and that the most popular material for modelling was clay. Spending free time with friends was also a very important aspect of the art station.

Overview of the Patents and Patent Applications on Upper Guardrail Protection Systems for Motorcyclists
Laura Brigita Parežnik, Marko Renčelj, Tomaž Tollazzi, 2025, izvirni znanstveni članek

Opis: Upright-posture motorcycle crashes against steel safety barriers (SSBs) often result in severe upper-body injuries due to the sharp upper edge of the rail. While solutions for sliding crashes on curves, called a ‘motorcyclist-friendly barrier’, are already implemented in practice, protective measures for upright-posture impacts remain underdeveloped. This study systematically reviews patents and patent applications addressing upper guardrail protection for motorcyclists. We identified and analysed a small number of existing innovations aimed at mitigating the consequences of upright crashes. The selected solutions were evaluated according to their technical design, ease of installation, potential for recycling, environmental compatibility, and expected costs. Our comparative analysis reveals that while some patents or patent applications offer promising features, such as flexible caps, bent plates, or modular attachments, none comprehensively address all safety, environmental, and economic requirements. The findings provide a basis for further development of motorcyclist-friendly SSB designs and suggest specific criteria that should be included in future guidelines and standard updates.

Students' attitudes towards didactic characteristics in graphic design classes
Martina Kač Nemanič, 2019, izvirni znanstveni članek

Opis: Contemporary education enables the development of creative expression in students, while the role and significance of didactic approaches in secondary school have not yet been comprehensively studied. The article presents the results of research into students' attitudes towards didactic characteristics of Graphic Design classes in secondary school. We were interested in the attitude of 3rd-year students (17-18 years old) towards the characteristics of the subject Graphic Design, and their level of satisfaction with the use of teaching methods, learning techniques and didactic communication in Slovenian schools. The results show that little attention is paid to the concept of effective methodologies in practice. There is a need for a range of didactic approaches that would contribute to active, interesting, creative and dynamically based Graphic Design classes.

Omissions by design in a survey : is this a good choice when using Structural Equation Models?
Paula Cristina Ribeiro Vicente, 2024, izvirni znanstveni članek

Opis: Missing observations can arise due to the effort required to answer many questions in long surveys and the cost required to obtain some responses. Implementing a planned missing design in surveys helps reduce the number of questions each respondent needs to answer, thereby lowering survey fatigue and cutting down on implementation costs. The three-form and the two-method design are two different types of planned missing designs. An important consideration when designing a study with omissions by design is to know how it will affect statistical results. In this work, a simulation study is conducted to analyze how the usual fit measures, root mean square error of approximation (RMSEA), standardized root mean square residual (SRMR), comparative fit index (CFI), and Tucker-Lewis index (TLI) perform in the adjustment of a Structural Equation Model. The results revealed that the CFI, TLI, and SRMR indices exhibit sensitivity to omissions with small samples, low factor loadings and large models. Overall, this study contributes to our understanding of the importance of considering omissions by design in market research.

Compression of triangulated solids’ surfaces by Decimating Reconstructable Triangles
Blaž Repnik, Borut Žalik, Krista Rizman Žalik, 2025, izvirni znanstveni članek

Opis: This paper introduces a new programming solution for reducing the size of files needed to store 3D geometric solids, whose surfaces are interpolated by watertight irregular triangle meshes. Unlike other approaches, the software does not introduce any special storage data format, but, instead, utilises popular CAD formats such as STL, OBJ, or PLY. This increases the software’s interoperability significantly. The software comprises an encoder and a decoder. The encoder estimates which facets may be removed in such a way that they can later be reconstructed unambiguously by the decoder. The decoder also ensures that the reconstructed triangles are oriented correctly. The encoder and the decoder are straightforward to understand and to implement. They are asymmetric, making any potential programming error easier to identify and correct.

Commercial SARS-CoV-2 targeted, protease inhibitor focused and protein–protein interaction inhibitor focused molecular libraries for virtual screening and drug design
Sebastjan Kralj, Marko Jukič, Urban Bren, 2022, pregledni znanstveni članek

Opis: Since December 2019, the new SARS-CoV-2-related COVID-19 disease has caused a global pandemic and shut down the public life worldwide. Several proteins have emerged as potential therapeutic targets for drug development, and we sought out to review the commercially available and marketed SARS-CoV-2-targeted libraries ready for high-throughput virtual screening (HTVS). We evaluated the SARS-CoV-2-targeted, protease-inhibitor-focused and protein–protein-interactioninhibitor-focused libraries to gain a better understanding of how these libraries were designed. The most common were ligand- and structure-based approaches, along with various filtering steps, using molecular descriptors. Often, these methods were combined to obtain the final library. We recognized the abundance of targeted libraries offered and complimented by the inclusion of analytical data; however, serious concerns had to be raised. Namely, vendors lack the information on the library design and the references to the primary literature. Few references to active compounds were also provided when using the ligand-based design and usually only protein classes or a general panel of targets were listed, along with a general reference to the methods, such as molecular docking for the structure-based design. No receptor data, docking protocols or even references to the applied molecular docking software (or other HTVS software), and no pharmacophore or filter design details were given. No detailed functional group or chemical space analyses were reported, and no specific orientation of the libraries toward the design of covalent or noncovalent inhibitors could be observed. All libraries contained pan-assay interference compounds (PAINS), rapid elimination of swill compounds (REOS) and aggregators, as well as focused on the drug-like model, with the majority of compounds possessing their molecular mass around 500 g/mol. These facts do not bode well for the use of the reviewed libraries in drug design and lend themselves to commercial drug companies to focus on and improve.

Optimising energy piles: a multi-objective approach to cost and failure probability
Rok Varga, Primož Jelušič, Bojan Žlender, 2025, izvirni znanstveni članek

Opis: This paper presents a comparative analysis of the influence of thermal loading on the design of optimally designed floating energy piles in soft consistency soils using a genetic algorithm. The nonlinear settlement of energy piles is also considered. The deterministic optimisation model (OPT-EP) includes a cost objective function constrained by design constraints and is later extended to include the probability of failure as a second objective function to perform multi-objective optimisation. This extension was undertaken because the Eurocode 7 approach only partially accounts for uncertainties in the soil, whereas the reliability-based design (RBD) approach fully exploits these uncertainties. Consequently, a multi-objective optimisation (cost vs. failure probability) was carried out in this study. The optimal designs obtained by the two different optimisation methodologies were further analysed and it was found that when the Eurocode 7 safety factor approach was used, the conditions related to thermal loading were not crucial for the design values. On the other hand, the multi-objective optimisation based on the RBD approach showed that the thermal loading affected the design, proving the usefulness of the multi-objective optimisation and the reliability-based design.

3D platform for coupling coefficient evaluation of an inductive power transfer systems
Jure Domajnko, Miro Milanovič, Nataša Prosen, 2022, izvirni znanstveni članek

Opis: This paper presents a custom-made, computer-connected, and controlled 3D platform that enables the evaluation of the coupling coefficient between the transmitter and receiver coil parts of an inductive wireless power transfer (IPT) system. The platform includes a computer application, a 3D positioning mechanism, and an inductance measurement circuit. The positioning mechanism moves the coils to the point in 3D space, and the inductance circuit measures the mutual inductance between the transmitter and the receiver coil. The measured value can be used to calculate the coupling coefficient between the transmitter and the receiver coil. The data are sent to the computer for further visualisation. The transmitter and the receiver coil can be evaluated by measuring the coupling coefficient between them in multiple points in space. Measurements performed with the platform can be used in the design and evaluation phases of inductive wireless power transfer systems and to extrapolate the polynomial function of the coupling coefficient in relation to the distance between coils or their misalignment.

Magnetic flux density measurement platform for an inductive wireless power transmitter coil design
Nataša Prosen, Miro Milanovič, Jure Domajnko, 2022, izvirni znanstveni članek

Opis: This paper presents a platform developed for automated magnetic flux density measurement. The platform was designed to be used to measure the magnetic flux density of the transmitter/receiver coil of an inductive wireless power transfer system. The magnetic flux density of a transmitter was measured using a small, 3-axis search coil. The search coil was positioned in the 3D space above the transmitter coil using a 3D positioning mechanism and used to measure the magnetic flux density at a specific point. The data was then sent to a computer application to visualize the magnetic flux density. The measured magnetic field could be used in combination with electromagnetic field solvers to design and optimize transmitter coils for inductive wireless power transfer systems.
