The Influence of Chestnut Extract and Its Components on Antibacterial Activity against Staphylococcus aureus

Opis: Increasing antimicrobial resistance has caused a great interest in natural products as alternatives or potentiators of antibiotics. The objective of this study was to isolate individual tannins from crude chestnut extract as well as to determine the influence of both crude extracts (tannic acid extract, chestnut extract) and individual pure tannins (gallic acid, vescalin, vescalagin, castalin, castalagin) on the growth of Gram-positive Staphylococcus aureus bacteria. Their antibacterial activity was monitored by measuring the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) and minimum bactericidal concentration (MBC) as well as the duration of the lag phase, growth rate and generation time. The effect of growth medium strength on the MIC of different tannins was also investigated. Bacterial growth was followed spectrophotometrically, and MIC values were determined by the microdilution method. The MIC values of various isolated compounds allowed us to determine the bioactive compounds and their contribution to antimicrobial activity. It was found that MIC values increase with increasing growth medium strength and that the lag phase lengthens with increasing tannin concentrations, while the growth rates decrease. Comparing the results of the two studies, the antimicrobial activity of tannins against S. aureus was not as pronounced as in the case of E. coli, which may indicate that a different mechanism of action is responsible for the antimicrobial effects of tannins on Gram-positive than on Gram-negative bacteria, or that a different mechanism is more pronounced.

Green Processing of Neat Poly(lactic acid) Using Carbon Dioxide under Elevated Pressure for Preparation of Advanced Materials : A Review (2012–2022)

Opis: This review provides a concise overview of up-to-date developments in the processing of neat poly(lactic acid) (PLA), improvement in its properties, and preparation of advanced materials using a green medium (CO2 under elevated pressure). Pressurized CO2 in the dense and supercritical state is a superior alternative medium to organic solvents, as it is easily available, fully recyclable, has easily tunable properties, and can be completely removed from the final material without post-processing steps. This review summarizes the state of the art on PLA drying, impregnation, foaming, and particle generation by the employment of dense and supercritical CO2 for the development of new materials. An analysis of the effect of processing methods on the final material properties was focused on neat PLA and PLA with an addition of natural bioactive components. It was demonstrated that CO2-assisted processes enable the control of PLA properties, reduce operating times, and require less energy compared to conventional ones. The described environmentally friendly processing techniques and the versatility of PLA were employed for the preparation of foams, aerogels, scaffolds, microparticles, and nanoparticles, as well as bioactive materials. These PLA-based materials can find application in tissue engineering, drug delivery, active food packaging, compostable packaging, wastewater treatment, or thermal insulation, among others.

When wine meets generation Z

Opis: Generation Z refers to people born in the 90s and raised in the 2000s. They have several nicknames, for example Generation 2020, the Internet Generation, Digital Natives, Screensters, and Zeds. This generation is technologically smarter than the others are and prefers to communicate via social networks. This study is about the relationship between Generation Z and wine consumption. An online survey among students was conducted to achieve this aim. The study was conducted in November and December 2020, in several Central European countries among 123 students aged 18–15 years. The results showed that the majority of respondents consider their knowledge of wines to be mediocre. Most respondents drink wine several times a month and prefer white wine. They also like to drink pure wine or wine with sweet drinks, and, when selecting a bottle of wine, taste, smell, and price are the most important factors. More than 50% of respondents buy wine at supermarkets and only 36% in wineries or wine shops. Generation Z has just begun to participate in wine tourism. As a result, their knowledge will be further upgraded and their opinions will change over the years.

Izzivi podnaslavljanja za gluhe in naglušne na primeru serije Star trek: The next generation : magistrsko delo

Opis: Sporazumevanje je ena temeljnih ovir, s katero se srečujejo gluhe in naglušne osebe. Pravica do dostopnosti je nujna; zato je podnaslavljanje eden od virov dostopa za gluhe in naglušne ter najpogostejša tehnika prevajanja avdiovizualnih vsebin. Podnapisi so pogosto že prilagojeno besedilo s prostorskimi in časovnimi omejitvami, ki že samo po sebi zahteva določene izpuste ali prilagoditve. Prevajalec mora paziti, da je sporočilna vrednost izvirnika ohranjena; to pa je pogosto težje upoštevati pri podnapisih, ki so namenjeni gluhim in naglušnim. Dostopnost teh podnapisov je zelo pomembna, saj v to skupino ne spadajo le starejši, temveč tudi otroci in učenci tujih jezikov, ki bi s pomočjo podnapisov lažje razumeli vsebino. Magistrsko delo se osredotoča na izzive v procesu nastanka podnapisov za gluhe in naglušne ter na vprašanje, ali so takšni podnapisi sploh kakovostni. Na primeru petih epizod prve sezone serije Star Trek: The New Generation (1987–1995) bomo analizirali angleške podnapise za gluhe in naglušne ter s pomočjo raziskave narave in posebnosti podnapisov ponudili vpogled v način podnaslavljanja vsebin za gluhe in naglušne. Teoretični del se bo osredotočil na avdiovizualno prevajanje, splošno podnaslavljanje ter podnaslavljanje za gluhe in naglušne. Opisali bomo načela, smernice in pravila podnaslavljanja. Pozornost bomo namenili tudi problematiki zvočnih učinkov in koncepta teh, saj so edina oblika prevoda, ki mora upoštevati neverbalne akustične elemente v vizualni besedni obliki. V empiričnem delu bomo na primeru analize podnapisov poskušali ugotoviti, ali je podnaslavljalec upošteval načela podnaslavljanja za gluhe in naglušne, ki jih predpisuje Netflix; ali je vključil zvočne učinke ter na kakšen način. S pomočjo analize bomo ugotovili, ali so podnapisi za gluhe in naglušne dovolj učinkoviti pri ohranjanju pomena ali pa so pomanjkljivi ter nezanesljivi.

Software based encoder/decoder generation for data exchange optimization in the internet of things : master's thesis

Opis: Efficient encoding of data is an important part of projects in the Internet of Things space. Communication packets must be kept as small as possible in order to minimize the power consumption of devices. In this thesis, an automatic code generation tool, irpack, is proposed that will unify the way packets are defined across all future projects at Institute IRNAS. Using a schema, this tool generates source code of encoders and decoders in target programming languages. A schema evolution system is also defined, by which changes to packets can be compatible across multiple versions. The tool is then applied to a selection of past projects to gauge its usefulness. It is determined that irpack is able to encode the same data into a similar or smaller size packet, while also providing additional versioning information.

Opis: The author of the first paper explores how students perceive various types of active learning techniques. The second paper identifies the teaching methods that are accepted by Generation Y students. The author of the third paper addresses the characteristics of contemporary students and their implications for teaching strategies. The fourth paper explores the effects of interdisciplinary problem-based learning on the development of students' knowledge, skills, and competences. Gamification as a teaching strategy is discussed in the fifth paper. The sixth paper addresses the challenge of merging disciplines of entrepreneurship and finance in one study program. The approaches to increasing students’ focus in learning finance-related subjects are discussed in the seventh paper. Germanismen im Drautal aus der Sicht der Generationsunterschiede

Opis: Die Diplomarbeit erforscht die substandardsprachlichen Germanismen im Drautal. Es ist auf den theoretischen und analytischen Teil geteilt. Der theoretische Teil ist aus zwei Einheiten verfasst, das sind die Sprachkontakte und die Geschichte der Germanismen. Sie entstehen aus mehreren Unterkapiteln. Ein besonderes Kapitel ist die Liste der substandardsprachlichen Germanismen. Im Rahmen des Kapitels sind die Entstehung davon und die Eigenschaften der Liste beschrieben. Der analytische Teil umfasst die Analyse der Liste der substandardsprachlichen Germanismen und den Vergleich der Liste mit dem Wortschatz einer Person aus der mittleren Generation. Sie musste für den jeweiligen substandardsprachlichen Germanismus eine der drei Optionen auswählen. Die erste war, dass sie das Lemma kennt und verwendet. Die zweite lautete, dass sie das Lemma kennt und nicht verwendet und die dritte bedeutete, dass sie das Lemma nicht kennt und nicht verwendet. Die Resultate sind in den Tabellen dargestellt und auf verschiedene Themen geteilt. Vor dem Anfang der Forschung wurden einige Voraussetzungen vorhergesehen. Die erste war, dass die mittlere Generation weniger substandardsprachlichen Germanismen kennt als die ältere. Die zweite lautete: Alle Interviewten haben ein breites Wortschatz der substandardsprachlichen Germanismen, unabhängig von ihrer Deutschkenntnisse. Die dritte war, dass der jeweilige substandardsprachliche Germanismus mehrere Varianten hat. Sie hängen von dem Ort des Sprechers ab und sind nicht groß (z. B. verschiedene Vokale).
