1. The Lack of ESP Materials in Slovenian Vocational Schools : a needs-based approach to teaching future hairdressersNina Ferlič, 2024, magistrsko delo Opis: This master's thesis examines the inclusion of field-related elements in the coursebook High Note 1 for hairdressing students at the secondary vocational school of design in Maribor. The theoretical part of the thesis provides an overview of the development of English for Specific Purposes (ESP), early theories of the communicative approach, the communicative approach defined by the Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR) and first foreign language programs in Slovenia. The empirical part of the thesis includes the analysis of the coursebook High Note 1 and its appropriateness for hairdressing students as well as two online questionnaires, for both students and their ESP teachers, with analysis of the results and the interpretations of results collected through the questionnaires. The thesis aims to explore the inclusion of ESP elements in the coursebook as well as to highlight the importance of not having sufficient field-related elements incorporated into the students' coursebooks. The thesis also provides a suggestion unit on how ESP and general English elements could be incorporated into a tailored coursebook that would cater to the students' needs. 2. Preparing students for mobility in vocational education and trainingTina Rajhman, 2019, magistrsko delo Opis: The following master’s thesis focuses on preparing students on mobility in vocational education and training. The focus lies on English for specific purposes which is an integral part of English in technical secondary and vocational technical education. The thesis also concentrates on exchange programmes and their effects on students’ L2 and communicative competences.
The above-mentioned educational programmes have to focus on both general English as well as English for specific purposes because the students need the knowledge at school, during the vocational training and later at work. The EU helps promoting language diversity by financing various international mobility programmes. The following MA thesis focuses on Erasmus+ which supports education and training at all levels and helps the schools send vocational education and training learners abroad. As proven by various studies, mobility has a beneficial effect on students’ English and communication skills.
The case study included seven students attending upper-secondary programmes at the school centre Škofja Loka. The purpose of the study was to analyse the influence of the students’ vocational training abroad on their foreign language competences and to see whether students’ communicative competences improved during the vocational training abroad. The results were used to prepare helpful language exercises for future Erasmus+ students. According to students’ answers, a four-week exchange period is long enough for both weaker as well as more advanced students to make progress in English. All of them also confirmed that the most used language skills during the mobility were speaking and listening. For that reason, the practical part of the MA thesis presents four examples of exercises focusing on woodworking vocabulary, listening and speaking. 3. English for Specific Purposes - Students of Nursing Bridging the Gap between Theory and PracticeSofia Ha Vela, 2016, diplomsko delo Opis: Theoretical framework: Mastering a foreign language is a necessary component in the pursuit of a successful nursing career. Needs analysis identifies the purposes of learning, the best teaching methods, and the possible problems in implementing the language program.
Purpose: This thesis explored the academic and professional needs of the English language for nursing students at the Faculty of Health Sciences in Maribor and for health care employees within the region in order to build a bridge between theory and practice.
Methodology: The quantitative method of research was applied and a survey questionnaire was used as an instrument to collect data. Questions included in the survey were mostly of the closed type. Microsoft Word and Microsoft Excel were used to analyze, examine, and edit the acquired information.
Results: It was determined that the learning needs of the students should focus on verbal communication and listening comprehension and less on grammar. More emphasis should be placed on conversational English, as both the student and employee groups felt that this was the most efficient method for learning.
Conclusion: The necessary information is now available to make improvements to the English language courses at the Faculty of Health Sciences in Maribor to better meet the needs of future health care professionals. Ultimately, this can improve communication between nurses and patients in a foreign language and increase the quality of care.
