The Influence of English on the Language of Croatian Influencers on YouTube, Instagram and TikTok Social Media : master's thesis
Ena Cilar, 2023, magistrsko delo

Opis: The rapid spread of the English language, which is frequently referred to as a lingua franca, has had a significant impact on other languages and the peculiar language of computer-mediated communication. What is more, the Internet, social media and digital influencers are the key agents of both language change and changes in the modern society. Due to the globally growing popularity of social media influencers, the purpose of this thesis is to explore the ways in which their language use is affected by the globality of English, with a focus on Croatian influencers. Therefore, data for this paper are drawn from altogether 270 social media posts published by the eight most successful Croatian influencers on YouTube, Instagram and TikTok. The research methods include linguistic, thematic and content analysis. The results reveal that the use of ‘ad hoc loanwords’ and intra-sentential code-switching are more common among Croatian influencers in comparison with outdated Anglicisms and inter-sentential code-switching. While the most frequently used loanwords among Croatian influencers belong to the categories of cyberculture and popular culture, the use of loanwords belonging to particular semantic fields is not strongly related to their thematic content categories. The importance and originality of this thesis are that it is the first study to provide new insights into the language use of Croatian influencers in relation with English as a global and leading online language. However, due to practical constraints, it is limited in terms of the research sample size and generalizability, which offers implications for further research.

With the help of questionnaire which had 9 tasks in total, we were able to examine and research to what extent do the Slovenian 9th graders know and successfully use Past Simple and Present Perfect. The questionnaire was created accordingly to the syllabus. The learners were the most successful when dealing with the theoretical part of the questionnaire. Even though they had some problem when choosing the correct tense when dealing with practical tasks, they had a higher success rate when dealing with the tasks that were theoretical. The learners from 9th grade achieved overall positive success rate in all tasks which means that they successfully know, recognize and properly use Past Simple and Present Perfect Tense.

Globalization: The Influence of English on the Language of Macedonian and Slovene Students
Emi Nikolovska, 2016, magistrsko delo

Opis: Globalization influences economic development political systems, the environment, languages and cultures as well as many other aspects of societies worldwide. Language has become an integral and very sensitive element in the process of globalization; therefore globalization related issues cannot be discussed without the analysis of language changes. Today the English is a means of mutual communication of the emerging global culture spread by international trade and relations, the internet, science, literature, sports and entertainment. The influence of the English language on Macedonian and Slovene is evident on almost all linguistic levels. The main goal of this thesis is to present the influence that English has on the language of Macedonian and Slovene students. The research is focused on the analysis of undergraduate theses in order to indicate the linguistic levels where the influence is most evident and frequent. Additionally, as part of the research, I have prepared questionnaires distributed among students currently studying at major universities in Macedonia and Slovenia. The results show that the most affected linguistic levels are vocabulary and orthography. Furthermore, the results point to the necessity of enriching the technological terminology in both languages of interest. Students do not have negative attitudes toward the expansion of English; on the contrary they believe that it provides certain benefits (education, career, international communication). Macedonian and Slovene are not threatened by the spread of the English language, but that does not mean that we should stop protecting our linguistic heritage and indulge in indiscriminate use of words borrowed from English.
