Motivation for Learning English in Adulthood
Jerneja Osredkar, 2019, magistrsko delo

Opis: Technological development, information technology development, new ways of communicating and globalisation have influenced the society and knowledge greatly. One's knowledge needs to be upgraded and improved constantly since it enables the quality of work, personal development, as well as a better quality of life in society. Due to historical spread of the language and the economic power of the United States of America, English has gained the position of a global language and is used as a lingua franca in the world. Therefore, many invidiuals decide to learn English in adulthood. Their decision to enrol in language courses and final success depend on many factors, motivation certainly being one of the key factors. The main aim of the master’s thesis is to find out what motivates adults to take part in language courses as well as what the potential barriers are. The analysis of the survey has not shown any major differences in motivation between older and younger adults; however, factor analysis shows that knowledge is the most important value upon which people decide to enrol in the English language classes. When analysing barriers, situational barriers have proven as the most pressing issue once again.

Translation of Characteristics of African American Vernacular English in Kathryn Stockett´s Novel The Help
Ana Klement, 2016, diplomsko delo

Opis: The thesis is an overall view over translation of African American Vernacular English (AAVE) in the novel The Help by an American author Kathryn Stockett and in the translation Služkinje by Dušanka Zabukovec. Main purposes of the thesis are to present literary translation, standard and non-standard language, introduce dialect, sociolect and idiolect and the translation of those lects; introduce AAVE: its socio-linguistic context and its origin, AAVE in literature and its general characteristics; get familiarized with the American author Kathryn Stockett and her work The Help and the translator Dušanka Zabukovec with the translation Služkinje; furthermore, introduce socio-historical setting of the original novel, plot summary, main themes and language in the novel. Purposes of the second part of the thesis are to introduce the methodology for observation of translation and present the comprehensive analysis of translation of characteristics of AAVE in the original and translated text; and explore, define and support as many examples of characteristics of AAVE as possible. The analysis performed in this thesis has shown that characteristics of AAVE from the original novel are not maintained in the translation and that emotional and psychological reaction of an American reader and a Slovene reader are not the same, since language – AAVE – plays a significant role in the original text. The last part of the thesis presents some solutions and suggestions to maintain or, at least, show the existence of characteristics of AAVE in the Slovene novel Služkinje.

Attitudes of different age groups of Slovene speakers toward English
Laura Gerenčer, 2011, diplomsko delo

Opis: English is the most widely spread language of today's world. Its functions exceed the ones of a lingua franca, as it is not used only for the purpose of international communication, but is also more and more widely used within non-English-speaking countries in different domains. Thus English exerts a great influence on other languages, their lexis, syntax, orthography and cultural aspect. All this brings up certain attitudes towards the language. Language attitudes are opinions, ways of thinking, feeling and reacting toward a language or its speakers, and can significantly affect people’s behaviour. The purpose of this paper was to research the attitudes of three different age groups of Slovene speakers toward English. In the theoretical part the theory behind language attitudes, the current status of English and its presence in Slovenia are presented. In the empirical part the results of the questionnaire, which was filled out by four different groups – the 8th grade pupils, the students of English, the students of other study programmes and the adult learners of English – three age groups in total, are analysed and interpreted.

Faithfulness to the dialect in English and Slovene songs
Sabina Jevšenak, 2011, diplomsko delo

Opis: When we speak we are able to control our language. We can speak in our dialect, with our accent, or we speak correctly as the standards of a language require. The purpose of this paper was to research how is with this phenomenon in music. Do different singers use the same language when singing and when speaking? I used three different English dialects (Cockney, Irish and Scottish dialect) and two random representatives of each dialect for my research. I transcribed one song and one interview of each representative and parallel to that transcribed the same text in RP. I concentrated on the differences and compared the results. Moreover, for comparison between English and Slovene language I used my diploma seminar work, which deals with dialects in Slovene songs.

Anka Balant, 2012, diplomsko delo

Opis: In the first part of my graduation thesis I speak about Latin America because that is where English Spanish cognates came from. There are twenty countries in Latin America and they generally lie south of the United States. Europeans began to influence the people and culture of Latin America with the arrival of Christopher Columbus in 1492. He "discovered" many islands in the Caribbean and mapped the coast of Central and South America. Spain built its empire in the central and southern parts of the Americas and exploited human and material resources. Preservation of Christianity in Latin America was also the goal of the Spanish Crown and it allowed colonialism to rule Latin America for over three hundred years. As I state in my graduation thesis, the Spanish domination of cruelty, exploitation, discrimination and repression did not last forever. American-born descendants of Spaniards, called criollos, fought for South American independence, and continued to rule many new nations of Spanish America for generations. The struggle for independence was hard, but despite that almost all Latin American countries had gained their independence by 1825. The main part of my graduation thesis is about English Spanish cognates. In a technical sense, cognates are two words that have a common origin. Cognates often have similar meaning, but in some cases the meaning has changed over the centuries in one language or another. An example of such a change is the English word "arena," which usually refers to a sports facility, and the Spanish arena, which usually means "sand." They both come from the Latin harena, which originally meant "sand" and came in time to also refer to an arena of a Roman amphitheater that was covered with sand. Spanish retained the meaning of "sand" (although the word can sometimes refer to a sports arena), but English expanded the word's meaning to include facilities, something like the Roman amphitheater (spanish.about.com). In a popular and not technical sense, the phrase "false cognate" is used to refer to cognates that have different meanings, such as the Spanish molestar (to bother) and the English "molest" (to abuse sexually). A more precise term to use for such word pairs is "false friends” (spanish.about.com).

Maja Rauter, 2012, diplomsko delo

Opis: English is the lingua franca of the world and it is as such affecting many languages; Slovene is no exception to this process. In the indirect contact between English and Slovene, the former is affecting the later in different areas, but the most receptive are the areas of media and the spoken discourse of young people. In the language of conversation of high school students in Slovenia, English is mostly used to fill lexical gaps, but lately it is also used in cases where there already exists a Slovene equivalent. This is a consequence of an increased influence of English on Slovene. There are some English words and phrases that are used by high school students independently of the fact where these students live, and there are some words and phrases that vary from city to city. Students of three different cities (Ljubljana, Maribor, and Murska Sobota) were included in the research sample. The purpose of this diploma paper was to find out the degree of students’ awareness of English influence on Slovene, to find the differences in the use of English among students living in different cities and to determine words and phrases that are most commonly used in the language of conversation of young people in Slovenia.

Opis: The book entitled »Exercises in Travel Writing and Literary Tourism – A Teaching and Learning Experiment« emerged as a result of experimental project work in teaching English during the subject English in Tourism – Higher Level 1 at the Faculty of Tourism in Brežice, University of Maribor. This approach included teaching in the classroom, research in libraries and at home, and field work. The collection brings eight very different texts on Travel Writing and Literary Tourism by Master's students of Tourism, who were free in choosing the topic of the texts, their styles and the titles . The field of Travel Writing is significant, not only as its own discourse, a tourism trend and a tool of branding and embedding attractions and/or destinations, but also as a tool of teaching and learning a foreign language, which, along with upgrading specific language knowledge, encourages curiosity, research, creativity, reflection and self-development.

Characteristics of Black English Vernacular in the novel The Color Purple
Patricija Tojnko, 2012, diplomsko delo

Opis: The diploma paper Characteristics of Black English Vernacular in the novel The Color Purple deals with Black English Vernacular. The main aims are to present the development of Black English and Black English Vernacular through time, to present and get to know the famous black writers through history, to get to know where Black English Vernacular stands in contemporary literature, to compare Black English Vernacular to Standard English, and to analyse the use of Black English Vernacular in Alice Walker’s masterpiece The Color Purple. African Americans had to fight hard to keep their language alive; their language was a means to communicate and to keep their spirits high through different trials. Different prejudices existed connected to the Black English Vernacular and speaking it automatically meant that the speaker was looked upon as someone illiterate and inferior. But black people were strong and proud of their language and with their infinite effort they succeeded to preserve something that would become; one of the most interesting parts of the English language. The first part of the diploma paper is theoretical; in the second part we analysed and compared Black English Vernacular to Standard American English. We applied the analysis to Celie’s and Nettie’s emotions and later compared the ways they spoke - according to their different life periods.
