Role of tourism in promoting geothermal energy : public interest and motivation for geothermal energy tourism in Slovenia

Opis: From household geothermal heat pumps to industrial geothermal heating and electricity production, geothermal energy is one of the most promising future climate change mitigation areas. This paper aims to analyse the potential role that the tourism industry has in the promotion of geothermal energy. Although general knowledge and understanding of geothermal energy is often relatively low, geothermal energy tourism has the potential to encourage the public to use and learn about geothermal energy and its applications. The paper first provides a theoretical conceptualisation of geothermal energy tourism at the energy production level and energy usage level. Empirical results from an online survey amongst a sample of the Slovenian population show that there is a reasonably strong interest in geothermal energy tourism, correlating with the public image of geothermal energy. The study furthermore identified three main motivational factors for energy tourism: the first is "Knowledge," followed by "Having fun," with the lowest level on the motivational factor being "Self-recognition." The paper finally provides future recommendations on geothermal energy tourism as a tool for wider public acceptance but also knowledge on the potential risks of geothermal energy as a sustainable energy source.

Visiting nuclear reactors : safety and security aspects

Opis: Visiting nuclear reactors is a niche tourism offer within energy (industrial) tourism, which leads tourists through areas that are not primarily meant for them. Hence, safety and security issues are even more critical in this case. This study aims to highlight different aspects of safety and security issues in nuclear power plant tours and to present measures taken to address these concerns. In addition, we studied the connection between plant visits and the public image of nuclear energy. Information was gathered through participant observation (personal visits of factory tours) and an online survey. There, we identified safety and security nuclear power plant visit protocols and a positive correlation between the visit variable and the two variables of the public image of nuclear energy, which suggests energy (industrial) tourism as a suitable tool to enhance awareness and knowledge about nuclear energy.

Hydroelectric powerplant Kablić - Impact on the environment and spatial development

Opis: Hydro energy is simply energy that is taken from water and converted into electricity. The most common method of producing energy from water is taking place in hydropower plants. These facilities represent industrial architecture where water coming down through an area causes turbines to rotate and the energy is captured to run a generator. When creating a hydropower plant for producing hydropower, in some cases, areas must be flooded, which largely affects spatial development during the planning process. In the 21st century, people are becoming increasingly interested in obtaining electricity through hydro potential, especially since water is a clean and renewable source of energy that does not emit toxins and does not pollute the environment. Due to this fact, hydroelectric plants are becoming places of education and receive more visitors, which is developing a new branch of sustainable tourism.
