Challenges of teaching primary school migrant students basic English
Patricija Obrovnik, 2021, magistrsko delo

Opis: Educational institutions carry an immense responsibility as the key institutions where migrant children start their integration process. Educational workers at schools are the ones that actualize government policies in their classrooms and directly influence migrant students’ integration process and monitor their progress. Teachers need proper education, training, and support to be able to work with migrant students successfully. Our master thesis focused and researched issues and problems teachers encounter when teaching migrant students English in the first triennium of primary school. In the first part of our thesis we defined migrant students and presented legislation and national guidelines surrounding migrant student integration. We introduced the immigration situation in Slovenska Bistrica, where a proportionally large Kosovo minority lives, and the two primary schools where we conducted our research. In the empirical part of our thesis, we interviewed four teachers that teach English in the first triennium of primary school about their experience with teaching in multicultural classrooms. Teachers rely on visual aids and mime to teach English through group activities where students actively participate through song, dance and games. The analysis of interviews showed that even though all English lessons are conducted in English, migrant students’ lack of Slovenian knowledge and their lack of socialization present the biggest problems interviewed teachers face.

Classroom climate as a part of contemporary didactical approaches
Majda Fiksl, Boris Aberšek, 2014, izvirni znanstveni članek

Opis: To achieve successful teaching in the 21st century school, teachers must change their didactical approaches in order to create a stimulating pro-activeness in a pleasant classroom climate for better development of student's achievement. A classroom climate in the present research means the combination of variables within a classroom that work together to promote learning in a comfortable environment. In the present research, classroom's climate will be evaluated, and what kind of influence different didactical approaches have on the atmosphere in the classroom. The classroom climate of two 6th grade classes at a lower secondary school will be studied: a class with traditional methods of teaching and a class with innovative methods, as regards searching for ideas, monitoring the students' progress and giving instructions. Students in both classes filled out a questionnaire with thirteen statements, which included three dimensions of a classroom atmosphere: personal relationship, contribution to the class and research work. The results confirmed a change in the perception of the classroom climate, depending on different innovative didactical approaches. The values of individual dimensions are higher in the class with innovative methods, which was confirmed with a better atmosphere in this class and an increased activeness of the students. When introducing changes in an educational process, it is necessary to establish a positive classroom atmosphere.

Tamara Višnić, Ljubica Ivanović Bibić, Smiljana Đukičin Vučković, Anđelija Ivkov-Džigurski, Eva Konečnik Kotnik, 2017, izvirni znanstveni članek

Opis: This paper discusses the methodological procedures of application of teaching aids through the subjects: World around us, Nature and Society and Geography, as well as an adequate choice of teaching resources that encourage students to earn a permanent knowledge. The idea is to use teaching aids in active teaching and to turn it into the practical use of the material, in order to efficiently adopt the fundamental knowledge about the nature of science in the classroom teaching. The procedures are identified, which are especially important from the point of maximum achievements in teaching the use of teaching aids, and especially significant for subjects the World around us, Nature and Society and Geography. The aim of this study was to determine the importance of teaching aids in active teaching, as well as whether the student becomes mentally active participant in the educational process using teaching aids. The study involved class teachers (154) who evaluated the importance of teaching resources for permanent adoption of knowledge of students. In addition, the survey was analyzed and different types of learning resources in terms of their values in the activation of thinking in students were analyzed as well. This survey has confirmed the hypothesis about the importance of teaching aids for thoughtful activation of the students.

Back to nature: exploring the potential for implementing the Norwegian idea of outdoor days in the Slovenian school system
Katja Gomboc, 2016, kratki znanstveni prispevek

Opis: Nowadays it is common to use the expressions ‘in the classroom’ and ‘out of the classroom’ (outdoors). In this article the word ‘outdoors’ will be replaced with the words ‘in the natural environment’, ‘into the natural environment’ and ‘within the natural environment’. These words accent the equal importance of nature as a learning area, a concept that is often forgotten, neglected or ignored. In this area, Norway has forged a real connection between people and nature, a way of life called “friluftsliv,” and has used experiential learning based on learning and playing in an outdoor area. In this article is presented a research study of teaching in nature, the Norwegian nature-oriented curriculum and the implementation of nature practice in the Slovenian school system.

Analysis of didactic games in selected coursebooks
Mateja Krajnc, 2017, magistrsko delo

Opis: For early foreign language learning, it is typical that it is carried out in a dynamic, varied and child-friendly way. This means that there is a wide variety of media used in these lessons, which enrich the learning process and make learning more efficient and, most importantly, more interesting for the students. One of the many media is also didactic games, which is being used more and more in practice. Due to the actuality of the topic of didactic games, the purpose of this Master’s thesis is to analyze didactic games in selected coursebooks for English in the fourth grade of primary school. In the theoretical part the terms “(child’s) play”, “game” and “didactic game” are defined, based on the technical literature. The importance of child’s play for the development of children and the significance of games in the educational process are presented. Numerous types of didactic games are listed and presented, along with their use in the classroom. Furthermore, the term “coursebook” is defined and the importance of its role in the educational process illustrated. At the end of the theoretical section, the requirements for coursebook design are presented and the characteristics of a quality coursebook listed. In the empirical section of the thesis, the analysis that was carried out based on the selected coursebooks is presented. The research shows that there is a small share of didactic games in the selected coursebooks and that language games and communicative games prevail. The majority of games are intended for practicing vocabulary, speaking and listening. The research also reveals that didactic games encourage all forms of work (individual work as well as pair work and group work).

Exploring stereotypes
Kirsten Hempkin, 2008, izvirni znanstveni članek

Opis: It is widely accepted that the use of humour and jokes in particular brings a number of benefits to the EFL teacher. Not only can jokes help to establish a relaxed learning atmosphere, they can also serve as a context in which to study particular aspects of grammar, vocabulary and culture. However, jokes based on national and regional stereotypes tend to be ignored by EFL teachers, as their potential to cause offense has seen them deemed unsuitable for classroom use. The purpose of this paper is to present a different perspective: it is precisely the rather risky nature of these jokes which makes them ideal for classroom use, particularly in lessons with the specific aim of raising students' cultural awareness through the exploration of stereotypes.

Challenges of advanced technologies and school of the future
Ivan Gerlič, 2010, izvirni znanstveni članek

Opis: The era of advanced technology claims a different individual. The individual that would undisturbed function in the era of digitalization and would better perceive and protect our environment with the help of accomplishments and benefits of advanced information and communication technology (ICT). There is no better time for learning and concretization of these values as in school. Nowadays pupils, the pupils of digital era, are more and more experienced in the usage of contemporary media and networks. That is why they require the modification of conditions and teachers' role in the school. Will new information and multimedia or hypermedia support for classrooms and new didactical ideas improve learning results, and stimulate innovation and greater pleasure towards learning and knowledge? All these questions will be answered in our contribution.

The role of background music in the English language classroom
Anna Sorger, 2013, diplomsko delo

Opis: According to the Statistical Office of the Republic of Slovenia, the interest in second language learning has been increasing in recent years. In the context of primary and secondary education in Slovenia, English language is prominent in the field of foreign languages. A quite similar picture can also be seen in the context of non-formal educational system for adults (http://www.stat.si). Throughout recent years, more and more attention has been given to the importance of a learning environment. Stimulating and pleasant learning environment has a considerable impact on the actors of an educational process and the results of a learning process. Many researchers and educators have been trying to discover the path to effective teaching and learning. In the 1970s, Dr. Georgi Lozanov, the Bulgarian psychotherapist, developed a teaching method called Suggestopedia. The approach was based on the idea that positive suggestion stimulates the learning process. Relaxation techniques, music and a pleasant environment are central to this approach. Mainly it was used to teach foreign languages. The purpose of this graduation thesis is to determine the impact of background music in the English language classroom. Additionally, it is examined whether the age factor plays a role in the perception acceptance to listening to music in the English classroom. It is assumed that learners have a positive experience regarding the use of background music in the English language classroom. By using a questionnaire we found out that learners (both, younger and older) are more relaxed during English lessons when background music is being played. Learners also tend to listen to it more often during English lessons. It was also found out that, compared to younger learners, adult learners use various relaxation techniques in order to increase relaxation during studying more often.

Otherness - challenge or obstacle in multimedia translation
Barbara Majcenovič Kline, 2011, strokovni članek

Opis: As the world becomes increasingly unified, there is a growing tendency for language transfer in audiovisual media. Media are one of many different channels through which globalization is rapidly occurring. Although audiovisual (or multimedia) translation may not have been discussed much until recently, in the last twenty years, awareness of the importance of this kind of communication has grown considerably because the development of new technologies. This paper will examine whether translation training is keeping up with theory on the translation process and its product. It will address such issues as how to acquire multimedia translation competence, how to design a lesson to achieve long-term goals, and how to determine the teacher's and the student's roles in translation activities. I will discuss possible ways of introducing the predominant and/or prevailing types of multimedia translation to students of translation, giving some practical examples for classroom dynamics.
