1. Supply chain integrity : addressing ethical concerns in agricultural supply chainsPaul Mukucha, Thulani Dube, Divaries Cosmas Jaravaza, 2025, izvirni znanstveni članek Opis: Ethics has become a trending phenomenon in most disciplines as a result of the sustainability wave enshrined in the United Nations Sustainability Goals (SDGs). In business circles procurement ethics have become topical as a result of the rising malpractices whose ripple effects have far reaching economic, social and environmental consequences. In the agricultural supply chains procurement ethics have been called to question due to outcries from the tobacco contract farmers whose livelihoods are affected by supplier development washing in the form of exorbitantly priced contract farming inputs. The unethical practice of supplier development washing in the form of exorbitantly priced tobacco contract farming inputs has some ripple effects which this study sought to determine. Twenty-five contracted tobacco farmers were interviewed and the results indicated that farmers subjected to tobacco merchants’ unethical conduct tend to practice contractor switching, side marketing, become insolvent, and indulge in unorthodox cost cutting measures. The study recommended that the regulatory authorities should intervene to bring sanity to the tobacco supply chains through enforcing contract farming mechanisms that reflect genuine supplier development. 2. Dynamic capabilities and environmental performance of high-tech SMEs in Pakistan – the role of eco-innovation and female executivesRameen Niamat, Fayyaz Hussain Qureshi, 2025, izvirni znanstveni članek Opis: Background/Purpose: This study examines the relationship between dynamic capabilities (DCs) and environmental performance (EP) in high-tech SMEs in Pakistan, focusing on the key dimensions of sensing, seizing, and reconfiguration. Additionally, it explores the mediating role of environmental innovation (EI) and the moderating effect of female leadership on this relationship. Methods: A quantitative research approach was employed, using a structured questionnaire distributed among male and female Chief Executive Officers (CEOs), senior management personnel, and executives in high-tech SMEs. Data were analysed using structural equation modelling (SEM) to assess the relationships between DCs, environmental innovation, and environmental performance. Results: The findings indicate that seizing capabilities significantly enhances environmental performance, with a one-point increase leading to a 0.282-point improvement. Similarly, reconfiguration contributes positively, with a one-point increase resulting in a 0.227-point improvement. Both process innovation (path coefficient = 0.384, p = 0.001) and product innovation (path coefficient = 0.157, p = 0.043) positively influence environmental performance. However, female leadership did not exhibit a significant direct effect on environmental performance. Notably, female moderators negatively impacted the relationship between process innovation and environmental performance (-0.328), suggesting that in lower hierarchical positions, female inclusion may reduce the effectiveness of process innovation in achieving sustainability goals. Conclusions: The study provides empirical evidence on the role of dynamic capabilities and environmental innovation in enhancing sustainability in high-tech SMEs. It highlights the need for firms to strengthen their seizing and reconfiguration capabilities to improve environmental performance. Additionally, eco-innovation should be encouraged, and gender diversity in leadership should be strategically considered when designing innovation and sustainability strategies. These findings offer valuable insights for policymakers and industry practitioners aiming to foster sustainable business practices in high-tech SMEs in Pakistan. 3. Ethical leadership and management of small- and medium-sized enterprises : the role of AI in decision makingTjaša Štrukelj, Petya Dankova, 2025, izvirni znanstveni članek Opis: The integration of artificial intelligence (AI) within the decision-making processes of small- and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) presents both significant opportunities and substan- tial ethical challenges. The aim of this paper is to provide a theoretical model depicting the interdependence of organisational decision-making levels and decision-making styles, with an emphasis on exploring the role of AI in organisations’ decision making, based on selected process dimension of the MER model of integral governance and management, particularly in relation to routine, analytical, and intuitive decision-making capabilities. The research methodology employs a comprehensive qualitative analysis of the scientific literature published between 2010 and 2024, focusing on AI implementation in SMEs, ethi- cal decision making in integral management, and regulatory frameworks governing AI use in business contexts. The findings reveal that AI technologies influence decision making across business policy, strategic, tactical, and operative management levels, with distinct implications for intuitive, analytical, and routine decision-making approaches. The analysis demonstrates that while AI can enhance data processing capabilities and reduce human biases, it presents significant challenges for normative–ethical decision making, requiring human judgment and stakeholder consideration. We conclude that effective AI integration in SMEs requires a balanced approach where AI primarily serves as a tool for data collection and analysis rather than as an autonomous decision maker. These insights contribute to the discourse on responsible AI implementation in SMEs and provide practical guidance for leaders navigating the complex interplay between (non)technological capabilities, ethical considerations, and regulatory requirements in the evolving business landscape. 4. What is the relationship between sales growth and insolvency risk?Nataša Šarlija, Sanja Šimić, Biljana Đanković, 2023, izvirni znanstveni članek Opis: Sales growth is essential for an enterprise’s survival and financial growth.
If an enterprise manages to achieve sales growth, its expansion can be
accomplished. However, does sales growth always have only positive effects?
If the enterprise is not collecting enough cash, it can miss a payment on its
debt, triggering a series of events that can lead to its insolvency. The goal
of the paper is to explore the relationship between an enterprise's sales
growth and its insolvency. The relationship is tested empirically on the data
set of 4271 SMEs in Croatia. The results confirmed that there is a relationship
between sales growth and insolvency. Better indicators exist with solvent and
growing SMEs than with insolvent and non-growing. Results have also shown
that high growth can be at the same time a high risk. The paper contributes
to a deeper understanding of the relationship between sales growth and
insolvency and empirically demonstrates that sales growth over 200% per
year induces the highest probability of insolvency compared to other lower
levels of growth. Ključne besede: SMEs growth, insolvency risk, sales growth, financial indicators, insolvency prevention, bankruptcy Objavljeno v DKUM: 28.05.2025; Ogledov: 0; Prenosov: 2

6. The interplay of restaurant SMEs' entrepreneurial and environmental characteristics, management of the requisite assets, and operational efficiencyTanja Planinc, Marko Kukanja, Anja Žnidaršič, 2022, izvirni znanstveni članek Opis: Background/Purpose: SMEs are subject to different factors in the business environments that influence their business performance. Considering the importance of restaurants’ environmental characteristics, entrepreneurs can also, through their entrepreneurial characteristics, influence SMEsʼ management of the requisite assets (MRA). Accordingly, this study examines the influence of restaurant SMEs’ entrepreneurial (self-efficacy, orientation, and demographics) and environmental (location, size, and competition) characteristics on MRA and, consequently, on SMEs’ operational efficiency.
Methods: Primary data relating to the environmental (location, size, and competition) and entrepreneurial (self-efficacy, orientation, and demographic) characteristics were obtained using a survey questionnaire, while the secondary data were obtained from SMEs’ official financial reports. The sample consists of 266 restaurant SMEs in the Republic of Slovenia. Efficiency was analysed using data envelopment analysis (DEA), and structural equation modelling (SEM) was used to test the research model.
Results: The results indicate that environmental characteristics have a much more significant impact on MRA than entrepreneurial characteristics. Entrepreneurial self-efficacy and most demographic characteristics (age, gender, education, and experience) proved not to influence significantly MRA and, consequently, SMEs’ operational efficiency.
Conclusion: SMEs’ external environment is generally not directly influenced by managerial decisions. Therefore, it is critical to strengthen the influence of the internal environment through an active development of entrepreneurial characteristics, which could result in a more effective MRA and higher efficiency. The conclusion provides suggestions for future research and valuable information for entrepreneurs, academia, and policymakers. 10. The interplay among restaurant SMEs' financial, quality, and managers' perceived business performance : a balanced scorecard approachMarko Kukanja, Tanja Planinc, Anja Žnidaršič, 2023, izvirni znanstveni članek Opis: The present study aims to test a simplified version of the balanced scorecard (BSC) model for restaurant industry SMEs. This study aims to determine if (I) restaurant managers' perceived business performance correlates to SMEs' (II) actual financial and (III) quality performance. A new variable, the manager's perceived business performance, was added in light of the unique characteristics of restaurant SMEs. We hypothesized that all three business perspectives are positively correlated since restaurant managers must have realistic perceptions of SMEs' business performance. A total of 266 questionnaires were obtained from restaurant managers, and 1,330 questionnaires were obtained from restaurant guests. SMEs' official financial reports served as the basis for the analysis of financial data. Exploratory factor analysis and correlation analysis were used to investigate the relationships among the three perspectives. Results indicate that managers' perceptions of business performance are not correlated to SMEs' actual financial performance, and managers have realistic perceptions about the quality of what restaurants offer. Interestingly, SMEs' financial performance is not correlated to guests' perceptions of quality. Introducing a new internal perspective indicates the incoherence among the three BSC perspectives. Furthermore, using selected variables highlights the necessity of raising the managerial perspective in future restaurant SME studies.
