Translation of Characteristics of African American Vernacular English in Kathryn Stockett´s Novel The Help
Ana Klement, 2016, diplomsko delo

Opis: The thesis is an overall view over translation of African American Vernacular English (AAVE) in the novel The Help by an American author Kathryn Stockett and in the translation Služkinje by Dušanka Zabukovec. Main purposes of the thesis are to present literary translation, standard and non-standard language, introduce dialect, sociolect and idiolect and the translation of those lects; introduce AAVE: its socio-linguistic context and its origin, AAVE in literature and its general characteristics; get familiarized with the American author Kathryn Stockett and her work The Help and the translator Dušanka Zabukovec with the translation Služkinje; furthermore, introduce socio-historical setting of the original novel, plot summary, main themes and language in the novel. Purposes of the second part of the thesis are to introduce the methodology for observation of translation and present the comprehensive analysis of translation of characteristics of AAVE in the original and translated text; and explore, define and support as many examples of characteristics of AAVE as possible. The analysis performed in this thesis has shown that characteristics of AAVE from the original novel are not maintained in the translation and that emotional and psychological reaction of an American reader and a Slovene reader are not the same, since language – AAVE – plays a significant role in the original text. The last part of the thesis presents some solutions and suggestions to maintain or, at least, show the existence of characteristics of AAVE in the Slovene novel Služkinje.

African Literature
Denis Recek, 2011, diplomsko delo

Opis: The topic of this diploma is the formation and shaping of African literature. The first chapter is about the beginning of African literature. It describes oral literature and its transmission into written literature. Written African literature had great problems in becoming a part of world literature because of its diversity of languages and dialects. Christianity and Islam are mentioned as two religions which had a great impact on African literature. Colonialism is broadly described as an essential factor in the development of African literature. The second chapter is an analysis of a famous novel written by Alan Paton entitled Cry the Beloved Country. It speaks of a parson searching for his son in a big city. During this search there are many descriptions of the circumstances people live and their relationships. I compared the novel to a recent movie about aliens that are imprisoned in a concentration camp entitled District 9.

Historical and Linguistic Elements in the Novel of Slavery The Price of a Child
Cita Konec, 2012, diplomsko delo

Opis: The paper presents the contemporary novel of slavery written by Lorene Cary, and published in 1995. The novel is based on the actual story of Jane Johnson, an escaped slave, and follows two events from Johnson's life. The Price of a Child includes many other historical facts, mentions several notable people, societies and movements of the antebellum era. The paper begins with the explanation of the term "neo-slave" narrative, and argues for the appropriateness of the term as a classification for The Price of a Child. The setting of the novel, plot summary and analysis of characters is presented prior to the two main sections of the paper, "Historical Elements" and "Linguistic Elements". The paper examines the historical facts in the novel, determines the extent of their historical accuracy, and analyses the literary dialect, which presents several stable features of the African American Vernacular English in direct discourse.

Carmen Astrid Horvat, 2012, diplomsko delo

Opis: Communication and interaction with people of different cultures is nowadays available to anyone. Some cultures are more alike than others, and trying to communicate with people of different cultures can be difficult, since each language has its own characteristics. This diploma paper discusses to what extent, if any, certain linguistic characteristics of Black English from the film Do the Right Thing can be translated into the Slovene language. The theoretical part presents the meaning of culture, cultural differences, a brief presentation of Slovene and African-American culture, along with a detailed presentation of speech of African-Americans, including its characteristics, which is followed by skopos theory and subtitling standards. The empirical part consists of analysis and comparison of examples with Black English characteristics found in the film, with their equivalents in Slovene translations. The skopos theory and subtitling standards are considered in the analysis as well.

Nina Rošer, 2013, diplomsko delo

Opis: The aim of this diploma is to show the development and characteristics of slave narratives by analysing the novel Beloved by Toni Morrison and Quentin Tarantino’s film Django Unchained. The aim is also to show the impact that African-American history (particularly slavery) has had on African American literature. Slavery is one of the main themes of African American writers, particularly in the 18th century; however, it is also an important subject of modern literature and writers. One of those is Toni Morrison, who is a literary voice of slave literature and whose work seeks to shed a light on the problems of African American people. For this purpose the novel Beloved is discussed. The book is a narration of the traumatic experience of slavery. In the same way, directors try to keep the memory of slavery alive in their films. One of those is Quentin Tarantino, who directed the latest film about slavery Django Unchained.

Problems in translating musical elements in African American poetry after 1950
Kristina Kočan, 2009, izvirni znanstveni članek

Opis: In most cases, African American poetry eschews traditional literary norms. Contemporary African American poets tend to ignore grammatical rules, use unusual typography on many occasions, include much of their cultural heritage in their poetry, and interweave musical elements into literary genres. The influence of such musical genres as jazz, blues, soul, and gospel, together with the dilemmas that occur for the translator, will be shown to great extent, since music, like black speech, is a major part of African American culture and literature. The translator will have to maintain the specific African American rhythm, blues adaptations and the improvisational language under the jazz impact. The paper presents the problems in translating post-1950 African American poetry into Slovene, and asks to what extent can one successfully transfer the musical elements within this poetry for the target culture? Inevitably, it will identify a share of elements that are lost in translation.

Translating culture
Kristina Kočan, 2015, izvirni znanstveni članek

Opis: The paper interrogates cultural specifics of contemporary African American poetry and exhibits translation problems when translating this poetic work. African American writers have always included much of their cultural heritage in their writing and this is immediately noticed by a translator. The cultural elements, such as African American cuisine, attire and style in general, as well as spiritual and religious practices, often play a significant role for African American poets who are proclaiming their identity. Moreover, the paper presents the translation problems that emerge when attempting to transfer such a specific, even exotic, source culture into a target culture, like Slovene. The goal is to show to what extent contemporary African American poetry can successfully be translated into the Slovene language and to highlight the parts that inevitably remain lost in the translation process.

Feed intake, body weight changes and haematology of West African dwarf goats fed dietary levels of Moringa oleifera leaf meal
Peter-Damian Chukwunomso Jiwuba, Francis Okechukwu Ahamefule, Samuel Okechukwu Okechukwu, Kingsley Ikwunze, 2016, izvirni znanstveni članek

Opis: A 90-day study was carried out with 36 West African Dwarf goats to determine the effect of Moringa oleifera leaf meal (MOLM) on feed intake, body weight changes and haematology of WAD does. Four diets were formulated such that diets T1, T2, T3 and T4 contained MOLM at 0%, 5%, 10% and 15%, respectively. The diets were offered to the goats, which were randomly divided into four groups of nine goats each in a completely randomized design. Average daily feed intake (ADFI), average daily weight gain (ADWG), feed conversion ratio (FCR) and heamatology of the animals were determined and statistically analyzed. Results showed that ADFI, ADWG differed significantly (P<0.05) with T4 goats having better values. FCR was however best for does fed T4 diet. PCV, RBC, MCV and WBC differed (P<0.05) significantly among the treatments. Packed cell volume (29.50-32.75%) was improved (p<0.05) by MOLM supplementation at 15% inclusion level. White blood cell counts for goats in treatment groups were significantly (p<0.05) higher and better than the control. Incorporation of 15% MOLM in diets of WAD does enhanced their performance and heamatological profile. Moringa oleifera leaf meal supplementation level at 15% was recommended for optimum West African Dwarf goat production.

Black Identity in Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie’s Novel Americanah
Nika Vaupotič, 2018, magistrsko delo

Opis: The thesis analysed the formation of black identity in Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie’s novel Americanah (2013). It aimed to uncover whether it is possible to talk about black identity, how it is formed and what influences its formation. It primarily explored how the author presented the formation of black identity in the protagonist of the novel through factors such as race, racism and racial terminology, body image, skin, hair and hair salons. In conducting the analysis of the problem, various critical approaches have been used, such as close reading of the text, formalist and stylistic analyses, review of literature and scholarly articles about the author and black identity, and the biographical method, followed by an evaluation and comprehensive interpretation of the topic in the scope of historical, social and linguistic contexts. Based on the examples presented, it appeared that exposure to various forms of racism, racial discrimination and marginalization, primarily connected to visual appearance, social position, treatment and opportunities (e.g., lighter skin and straighter hair improve one’s job prospects), led the protagonist to discover the meaning of being black in America. Thus, the research showed that the formation of black identity is influenced by the environment in which one lives and the social attitudes to which one is exposed.

Reviewing the narrative concerning the impact of population growth in Africa
Cocou Marius Mensah, 2019, izvirni znanstveni članek

Opis: This article discusses the topic of population growth in Africa, a recurring theme in the era of climate change and the fight against CO2 emissions. The African continent is full of essential raw materials and encompasses the youngest population in the world. There is no doubt concerning the significant role it will play in global affairs, at a time when the world population is ageing, according to the UN statistics. In recent years, many policymakers have highlighted the necessity to deal with overpopulation, provoking moral controversial and basic human rights abuses. This article, however, proposes an opposite argumentation based on fresh data and emphasises the opportunities and challenges to take on, as the author considers "overpopulation" as more of a challenge than a sentence to underdevelopment. Though the paper mentions different issues linked to overpopulation, such as migration crisis, ecological sustainability and the UN Sustainable Development Goals, it concludes with a reminder of the importance of international cooperation as a solution to global issues.
