1. Shakespeare on Trial: An Appraisal Analysis of Law-Infused Discourse in Shakespeare’s Othello and Its Two Slovene Translations : m. a. thesisAja Barbič, 2025, magistrsko delo Opis: The thesis explores the connection between literature and law through an appraisal-based linguistic analysis of thirteen selected excerpts from William Shakespeare's Othello and its Slovene translations by Oton Župančič (1923) and Milan Jesih (2013). Excerpts exemplify courtroom rhetoric as characters employ legal roles, such as judge, witness, and solicitor, thus engaging in discourse that mirrors judicial proceedings. The focus of the analysis is therefore on the legal discourse and how this discourse is either maintained or omitted in the Slovene translations. Using Martin and White's appraisal framework, developed in 2005 within systemic functional linguistics, this study examines how attitude, graduation, and engagement contribute to the usage of legal discourse. The comparative analysis of the original and the translations also reveals key differences in how evaluative meaning is preserved or transformed, highlighting the similarities and discrepancies. The research demonstrates that in Othello, legal discourse helps reveal character's intentions, while appraisal analysis reveals moral evaluations of the character's behavior, their emotions, and the aesthetic evaluation of circumstances, as well as how these evaluations are graded and how characters use their voice to either confirm the accusations or deny them. 2. Building intimacy between the protagonists in the film adaptations of Hardy's Far from the madding crowd : master's thesisKarmen Globočnik, 2025, magistrsko delo Opis: Thomas Hardy’s Far from the Madding Crowd (1874) has been adapted into film multiple times, with notable versions directed by John Schlesinger (1967), Nicholas Renton (1998), and Thomas Vinterberg (2015). This thesis explores how these adaptations portray the intimacy between the two protagonists, Bathsheba Everdene and Gabriel Oak, focusing on the visual and narrative techniques that have been used to develop their relationship.
By analysing a selection of key scenes from each adaptation, the thesis investigates the use of close-ups, camera angles, and dialogue features to convey the growing intimacy between Bathsheba and Gabriel, examining how these techniques reflect power dynamics and interact with physical closeness. Additionally, it considers how portraying intimacy differs across adaptations. The 1967 and 1998 films seem to use power dynamics more prominently through camera angles, while the 2015 adaptation foregrounds physical intimacy and humour. The findings show that each film emphasizes various aspects of the protagonists' relationship; the 1967 version focuses more on Bathsheba and Troy's connection, while the 1998 and 2015 films highlight the bond between Bathsheba and Gabriel.
Finally, this thesis contributes to the study of film adaptations of classic literature by offering a detailed comparison of the representation of intimacy across three distinct cinematic interpretations of Hardy’s novel. 4. Izzivi komuniciranja samooskrbe v času podnebnih in družbenih spremembTomaž Onič, Ana Vovk, David Hazemali, Tjaša Mohar, Bernarda Leva, Nastja Prajnč Kacijan, Kirsten Hempkin, Katja Plemenitaš, Barbara Majcenovič Kline, 2025, samostojni znanstveni sestavek ali poglavje v monografski publikaciji Opis: Pomen pojma »samooskrba« postaja v sodobnem času vse kompleksnejši, saj poleg ekonomskih vključuje tudi socialne, kulturne, okoljske in politične razsežnosti. A significant contribution that educators, especially language teachers, can make is connected to communicating about environmental questions and helping learners develop the critical skills and competences to engage with such questions fully. In this contribution, we present a series of tasks drawing upon the medium of stories – both fiction and non-fiction, for younger and older learners – which are designed to develop a number of key competences: enhance vocabulary in English relating to climate issues; develop awareness of the key themes regarding these issues; increase learners' critical thinking (regarding the use of language specifically) concerning information available on climate change and related issues. 6. 7. Framing of sea level rise in news headlines : a study of The Guardian and The New York TimesTjaša Mohar, Nastja Prajnč Kacijan, Kirsten Hempkin, Bernarda Leva, Tomaž Onič, Barbara Majcenovič Kline, David Hazemali, Katja Plemenitaš, 2025, samostojni znanstveni sestavek ali poglavje v monografski publikaciji Opis: The deepening of the environmental crisis brings an increased need for clear and targeted communication about environmental issues, leading to greater environmental awareness and encouraging the necessary changes in people’s behaviour. The way the media frames reports on environmental issues, such as climate change, plays a crucial role in the efficient communication of these issues. This paper examines how sea level rise was reported in the digital editions of The Guardian and The New York Times in 2022, utilizing framing theory – a theory that is used in textual linguistics to study texts on socially important topics in public discourse. The study identifies the predominant generic frames in the headlines and subheads of these articles, which are the key framing locations. A comparative analysis also reveals differences in the framing of sea level rise in the two newspapers. 8. Evaluating chatbot assistance in historical document analysisDavid Hazemali, Janez Osojnik, Tomaž Onič, Tadej Todorović, Mladen Borovič, 2024, izvirni znanstveni članek Opis: The article explores the potential of PDFGear Copilot, a chatbot-based PDF editing tool, in assisting with the analysis of historical documents. We evaluated the chatbot's performance on a document relating to the Slovenian War of Independence. We included 25 factual and 5 interpretative questions to address its formal characteristics and content details, assess its capacity for in-depth interpretation and contextualized critical analysis, and evaluate the chatbot’s language use and robustness. The chatbot exhibited some ability to answer factual questions, even though its performance varied. It demonstrated proficiency in navigating document structure, named entity recognition, and extracting basic document information. However, performance declined significantly in tasks such as document type identification, content details, and tasks requiring deeper text analysis. For interpretative questions, the chatbot's performance was notably inadequate, failing to link cause-and-effect relationships and provide the depth and nuance required for historical inquiries. 10. Visual Depiction of Narrative Gaps in the Graphic Novel Adaptation of Agatha Christie's The Murder of Roger Ackroyd : master's thesisJasna Verdnik, 2025, magistrsko delo Opis: The following thesis examines narrative gaps and hints through a comparative analysis of Agatha Christie's detective novel The Murder of Roger Ackroyd and its graphic novel adaptation of the same title by Bruno Lachard. Christie's detective novel is known for its unreliable narrator and innovative plot twists by including several narrative gaps—omissions of certain crucial information—which are revealed to the reader at the end. The focus of this thesis is to inspect the visual depiction of those narrative gaps in the graphic adaptation of Christie's novel through searching for hidden clues in the pictures. In our analysis, we explore the graphic novel and expect to find discrepancies between the two works—Christie’s detective novel and Lachard’s graphic novel adaptation— as they belong to different formats and genres. Our hypotheses imply that the drawings feature narrative gaps; however, they also contain hints which could potentially reveal the ending to the reader too soon. The aim of this thesis is to examine the visual clues that replicate the intricacies of Christie's original narrative and the details of the investigation.
