Investigation of the influencing parameters of the ▫$H_2O_2-assisted$▫ photochemical treatment of waste liquid from the hydrothermal carbonization process in a microreactor flow systemAleksandra Petrovič, Tjaša Cenčič, Silvo Hribernik, Andreja Nemet, 2025, izvirni znanstveni članek Opis: Due to its complex composition and toxicity, the waste liquid from hydrothermal carbonization (HTC) poses a serious environmental challenge that must be addressed before disposal. In this study, the photochemical treatment of HTC liquid in a microreactor flow system was investigated. The effects of wavelength, the presence of atmospheric oxygen, oxidizing agent (H2O2) and catalyst (FeSO4), residence time and pH on the efficiency of the photo-treatment were investigated. In addition, the influence of the addition of deep eutectic solvent (DES) on photo-treatment was studied. The results showed that the photochemical treatment was more efficient at 365 nm than at 420 nm, and that the acidic conditions gave better results than the basic ones. UV365 treatment in the presence of H2O2 (at a dosage of 1 vol%) resulted in removal efficiencies of 31.6% for COD, 17.6% for TOC, 16.9% for NH4-N and 17.2% for PO4-P. The addition of FeSO4 caused coagulation/flocculation effects, but improved phosphorus removal. The addition of DES resulted in slight discolouration of the liquid and proved unsuccessful in COD removal. The GC-MS analysis and 3D-EEM spectra showed significant changes in the fate of organics and in the fluorescence intensity of aromatic proteins and humic acid-like substances. Photochemical treatment in a microreactor flow system in the presence of H2O2 under the selected operating conditions reduced the content of organics and nutrients in the HTC liquid, but the process liquids still showed toxic effects on the organisms V. fischeri and Daphnia magna. 2. Thermogravimetric, kinetic and thermodynamic behaviour of raw and hydrothermally pretreated oil cakes during pyrolysis and TG-FTIR analysis of the gaseous productsAleksandra Petrovič, Sabina Vohl, Sven Gruber, Klemen Rola, Tjaša Cenčič, Lidija Čuček, Danijela Urbancl, 2025, izvirni znanstveni članek Opis: The pyrolysis of raw and hydrothermally (HTC) pretreated pumpkin (PC) and hemp (HC) oilseed cakes was investigated for the first time using thermogravimetric, kinetic and thermodynamic analyses. The influence of the HTC pretreatment and the type of reaction liquid (whey or water) on the pyrolysis was investigated and the pyrolysis gases were analysed. The HTC pretreatment increases the biochar yield with values of up to 44 wt.% compared to raw oil cakes (∼27 wt.%). The HTC pretreatment with whey resulted in a higher energy and biochar yield and better biochar properties than the pretreatment with water. The tested oil cakes provided comparable energy yields, although HC provided higher biochar yields, while PC biochar showed higher hydrophobicity. The kinetic modelling shows that the activation energies () for the pyrolysis of the raw oil cakes varied between 93.6 and 529.9 kJ/mol for PC and between 71.3 and 669.9 kJ/mol for the HC sample. HTC pretreatment in water media increased the values, while the use of whey led to a decrease in the values. 3. The effect of biochar applied alone and in combination with mineral and organic fertilisers on the yield of white cabbage and soil propertiesManfred Jakop, Nataša Belšak Šel, Erik Rihter, Tjaša Cenčič, Dušan Klinar, Denis Stajnko, Silva Grobelnik Mlakar, 2023, izvirni znanstveni članek Opis: The study aimed to investigate the effectiveness of biochar application on fertile soils in a temperate climate during the first year of application. The field trial was conducted on a nutrient-rich silt loam soil at two experimental sites in north-eastern Slovenia (Biš and Skorba). The effect of biochar applied alone or in combination with compost or mineral fertiliser on soil properties and yield of white cabbage was studied. In addition to the control (C), the soil received five treatments including biochar (B; 1.5 t/ha), compost (CO; 1.5 t/ha), biochar-mixed compost (BCO; 3.0 t/ha), standard mineral fertilisers (NPK; NPK 0.35 t/ha, potassium sulphate 0.25 t/ha and calcium ammonium nitrate 0.25 t/ha) and combined application of half the amount
of NPK and BCO (NPK+BCO). The results showed that the applied treatments had no significant influence on the measured soil chemical parameters, except for the amount of total organic carbon, electrical conductivity and pH in Biš and total carbon in Skorba. All investigated parameters (cabbage head weight, head circumference, total and market yield) were higher at the experimental site Skorba. Statistically significant differences were found only at the experimental site Biš, where the treatment influenced all parameters (p < 0.01), except for the head circumference of the cabbage. The NPK and NPK+BCO treatments produced significantly higher total yields (66.7 t/ha and 65.8 t/ha, respectively) and marketable yields (53.2 t/ha and 51.8 t/ha, respectively) compared to the other treatments (41.3-52.6 t/ha and 30.5-42.4 t/ha, respectively). Although the differences between the other treatments were insignificant, a trend of decreasing cabbage yields towards CO > BCO > B was observed. Similar results were also obtained when analysing the average data of the two experimental sites. 5. Ex situ bioremediation of diesel fuel-contaminated soil in two different climatesTjaša Cenčič, Tinkara Mastnak, Marta Svoljšak, Matjaž Finšgar, 2023, izvirni znanstveni članek Opis: The petroleum industry is often faced with accidental spills and discharges that pollute valuable natural resources such as soil. The purpose of this study was to assess bioremediation potential of an on-site landfarming unit (LU), a highly economical solution that complies with the zero-waste policy, for bioremediation of the contaminated soil after an actual diesel fuel leakage in a fuel depot. The first aim was to evaluate the effects of different climates on hydrocarbon bioremediation. For this reason, a part of the contaminated soil was moved from the initial location with a sub-Mediterranean climate to an LU at another location with a temperate continental climate. Our results demonstrated that remediation in sub-Mediterranean climate is less effective than the remediation in a temperate continental climate. The second aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of different plant species on the microbial population during bioremediation. For that purpose, 365-day monitoring of phospholipid fatty acids (PLFA) was performed. Our results support the hypothesis that plant-assisted bioremediation can diminish toxic effects of diesel-polluted soil and that the changes in plant species during bioremediation cause changes in the microbial population. Sustainable hydrothermal co-carbonization of residues from the vegetable oil industry and sewage sludge : hydrochar production and liquid fraction valorisationAleksandra Petrovič, Tjaša Cenčič, Jelena Parlov Vuković, Tomislav Jednačak, Silvo Hribernik, Sabina Vohl, Danijela Urbancl, Marina Tišma, Lidija Čuček, 2024, izvirni znanstveni članek Opis: In this study, the hydrothermal co-carbonization (co-HTC) of residues from the vegetable oil industry (pumpkin oil cake– PC, hemp oil cake– HC) and sewage sludge (SS) was investigated for the first time. The co-HTC was performed at 250 C and atreatment time of 5 h. The effects of the mass ratio of the feedstocks (1:1, 1:3 and 3:1) on the properties of the HTC products were investigated using various analytical methods (NMR, XRD, 3D-EEM, FTIR, etc.). The co-HTC of SS with oil cakes resulted in improved fuel properties of the hydrochar and an increase in C content from 36.9 to 53.7 wt%, and an increase in the higher heating value (HHV) from 14.8 to 23.6 MJ/kg. The combination with HC gave hydrochars with a higher HHV and higher C content than the combination with PC. The hydrochar yield varied in the range of 39.4–55.3 wt%. NMR analysis revealed a higher proportion of aliphatic (~60 %) than aromatic compounds (~35 %) in the hydrochars, as well as a high content of orthophosphate and unsaturated fatty acids. The liquid fractions were rich in nutrients and organic compounds, but toxic to aquatic organisms. The hydrochars and liquid fractions performed well in the germination test with plant species. 10. Uvedba metode merjenja živega srebra z induktivno sklopljeno plazmo z optično emisijsko spektrometrijo v analitskem laboratoriju : magistrsko deloAlen Erjavec, 2019, magistrsko delo Opis: Živo srebro v okolju predstavlja nevarnost organizmom, ki so mu izpostavljeni. V našem okolju je vsebnost živega srebra že naravno nekoliko višja, zato moramo nanj biti pozorni. Namen naloge je uvesti metodo merjenja Hg z induktivno sklopljeno plazmo z optično emisijsko spektrometrijo (ICP-OES), s pomočjo validacije po načinu Eurachem, za uporabo v okoljskem analitskem laboratoriju. V nalogi je zajeta priprava vzorcev, ki se pojavljajo v okoljski analitiki in merjenje teh s pomočjo ICP-OES. Ugotovljeno je bilo, da je metoda merjenja primerna za tehnološke meritve in je uporabna pri merjenju vsebnosti živega srebra v tleh, izkopih, umetno pripravljeni zemljini in odpadkih.
