Opis: For security and justice professionals (e.g., police officers, lawyers, judges), the thousands of peer-reviewed articles on nonverbal communication represent important sources of knowledge. However, despite the scope of the scientific work carried out on this subject, professionals can turn to programs, methods, and approaches that fail to reflect the state of science. The objective of this article is to examine (i) concepts of nonverbal communication conveyed by these programs, methods, and approaches, but also (ii) the consequences of their use (e.g., on the life or liberty of individuals). To achieve this objective, we describe the scope of scientific research on nonverbal communication. A program (SPOT; Screening of Passengers by Observation Techniques), a method (the BAI; Behavior Analysis Interview) and an approach (synergology) that each run counter to the state of science are examined. Finally, we outline five hypotheses to explain why some organizations in the fields of security and justice are turning to pseudoscience and pseudoscientific techniques. We conclude the article by inviting these organizations to work with the international community of scholars who have scientific expertise in nonverbal communication and lie (and truth) detection to implement evidence-based For security and justice professionals (e.g., police officers, lawyers, judges), the thousands of peer-reviewed articles on nonverbal communication represent important sources of knowledge. Network representation of multicellular activity in pancreatic islets : Technical considerations for functional connectivity analysis
Marko Šterk, Yaowen Zhang, Viljem Pohorec, Eva Paradiž, Jurij Dolenšek, Richard K. P. Benninger, Andraž Stožer, Vira Kravets, Marko Gosak, 2024, izvirni znanstveni članek

Opis: Within the islets of Langerhans, beta cells orchestrate synchronized insulin secretion, a pivotal aspect of metabolic homeostasis. Despite the inherent heterogeneity and multimodal activity of individual cells, intercellular coupling acts as a homogenizing force, enabling coordinated responses through the propagation of intercellular waves. Disruptions in this coordination are implicated in irregular insulin secretion, a hallmark of diabetes. Recently, innovative approaches, such as integrating multicellular calcium imaging with network analysis, have emerged for a quantitative assessment of the cellular activity in islets. However, different groups use distinct experimental preparations, microscopic techniques, apply different methods to process the measured signals and use various methods to derive functional connectivity patterns. This makes comparisons between findings and their integration into a bigger picture difficult and has led to disputes in functional connectivity interpretations. To address these issues, we present here a systematic analysis of how different approaches influence the network representation of islet activity. Our findings show that the choice of methods used to construct networks is not crucial, although care is needed when combining data from different islets. Conversely, the conclusions drawn from network analysis can be heavily affected by the pre-processing of the time series, the type of the oscillatory component in the signals, and by the experimental preparation. Our tutorial-like investigation aims to resolve interpretational issues, reconcile conflicting views, advance functional implications, and encourage researchers to adopt connectivity analysis. As we conclude, we outline challenges for future research, emphasizing the broader applicability of our conclusions to other tissues exhibiting complex multicellular dynamics.

Interplay between particle trapping and heterogeneity in anomalous diffusion
Haroldo V. Ribeiro, Angel A. Tateishi, Ervin K. Lenzi, Richard L. Magin, Matjaž Perc, 2023, izvirni znanstveni članek

Opis: Heterogeneous media diffusion is often described using position-dependent diffusion coefficients and estimated indirectly through mean squared displacement in experiments. This approach may overlook other mechanisms and their interaction with position-dependent diffusion, potentially leading to erroneous conclusions. Here, we introduce a hybrid diffusion model that merges a position-dependent diffusion coefficient with the trapping mechanism of the comb model. We derive exact solutions for position distributions and mean squared displacements, validated through simulations of Langevin equations. Our model shows that the trapping mechanism attenuates the impact of media heterogeneity. Superdiffusion occurs when the position-dependent coefficient increases superlinearly, while subdiffusion occurs for sublinear and inverse power-law relations. This nontrivial interplay between heterogeneity and state-independent mechanisms also leads to anomalous yet Brownian, and non-Brownian yet Gaussian regimes. These findings emphasize the need for cautious interpretations of experiments and highlight the limitations of relying solely on mean squared displacements or position distributions for diffusion characterization.

Opis: The complexity in the styles of 1200 Byzantine icons painted between 13th and 16th from Greece, Russia and Romania was investigated through the Kolmogorov algorithmic information theory. The aim was to identify specific quantitative patterns which define the key characteristics of the three different painting schools. Our novel approach using the artificial surface images generated with Inverse FFT and the Midpoint Displacement (MD) algorithms, was validated by comparison of results with eight fractal and non-fractal indices. From the analyzes performed, normalized Kolmogorov compression complexity (KC) proved to be the best solution because it had the best complexity pattern differentiations, is not sensitive to the image size and the least affected by noise. We conclude that normalized KC methodology does offer capability to differentiate the icons within a School and amongst the three Schools.

Resident perceptions and responses to tourism : individual vs community level impacts
Tina Šegota, Tanja Mihalič, Richard R. Perdue, 2022, izvirni znanstveni članek

Opis: This paper reviews resident tourism attitude research through the lens of the individual- and community-level perceived impacts of and responses to tourism. It explores how perceived impacts of tourism and responses to tourism development have been conceptualised and measured in the existing resident attitudes models published between 1990 and 2020. Three categories of variables were identified and used: antecedent variables, tourism impact variables, and dependent variables. The latter three categories are used to discuss the research topic from the lenses of improvements in measurement instruments. Finally, the paper suggests rethinking the overall conceptualisation of residents’ perceptions of and reactions to tourism – it proposes future research directions to distinguish between individual-level and community-level effects and reactions.

The surgical treatment of osteoarthritis
Peter Brumat, Samo Novak, Matevž Topolovec, Rihard Trebše, 2022, pregledni znanstveni članek

Opis: Osteoarthritis is a degenerative condition affecting the whole joint with the underlying bone, representing a major source of pain, disability, and socioeconomic cost worldwide. Age is considered the strongest risk factor, albeit abnormal biomechanics, morphology, congenital abnormality, deformity, malalignment, limb-length discrepancy, lifestyle, and injury may further increase the risk of the development and progression of osteoarthritis as well. Pain and loss of function are the main clinical features that lead to treatment. Although early manifestations of osteoarthritis are amenable to lifestyle modification, adequate pain management, and physical therapy, disease advancement frequently requires surgical treatment. The symptomatic progression of osteoarthritis with radiographical confirmation can be addressed either with arthroscopic interventions, (joint) preservation techniques, or bone fusion procedures, whereas (joint) replacement is preferentially reserved for severe and end-stage disease. The surgical treatment aims at alleviating pain and disability while restoring native biomechanics. Miscellaneous surgical techniques for addressing osteoarthritis exist. Advanced computer-integrated surgical concepts allow for patient personalization and optimization of surgical treatment. The scope of this article is to present an overview of the fundamentals of conventional surgical treatment options for osteoarthritis of the human skeleton, with emphasis on arthroscopy, preservation, arthrodesis, and replacement. Contemporary computer-assisted orthopaedic surgery concepts are further elucidated.

The online communication of corporate social responsibility in subsidiaries of multinational companies in Hungary
Richard Szanto, 2018, pregledni znanstveni članek

Opis: Background and Purpose: Many studies have explored the differences in the management of corporate social responsibility (CSR) of multinational companies across the globe. The main question of the study was, are there differences between CSR practices between home country and host country operations? Design/Methodology/Approach: This study investigates the differences in online CSR communication between global corporate websites and the webpages of local subsidiaries in Hungary. The sample contains 70 multinational companies (MNCs) and their Hungarian subsidiaries. All the subsidiaries of the sample are listed amongst the largest 200 companies (based on turnover) in Hungary. Both the local (Hungarian) and the global internet sites of these MNCs were visited, and pre-defined categories were sought on the corporate websites. The presence/lack of these CSR themes and topics on the websites were recorded. Results: The findings show that online CSR disclosure of the subsidiaries is usually more limited than the global communication. Moreover, distance from the headquarters seems to matter, the farther the headquarters of the MNC is located, the narrower CSR presence on the websites of the local subsidiary can be observed. Conclusion: The paper’s main contribution is to deepen our knowledge about the CSR strategies of the multinational companies across their operations. It was confirmed that their CSR practices significantly differ between the host and home countries.
