1. Developing a framework for closed-loop supply chain and its impact on sustainability in the petrochemicals industryLobna Tag el Sheikh, Rebeka Kovačič Lukman, 2022, izvirni znanstveni članek Opis: Companies rely on formulating, implementing, and monitoring strategies in social, environmental and economic aspects to ensure that they achieve their goals and keep abreast of developments related to sustainability requirements. Therefore, our study develops a system to integrate the closed-loop supply chain approach in the petrochemical sector. The research follows the quantitative-based approach by collecting data through a questionnaire directed to employees in the supply chain departments, including 230 questionnaires that were collected. Correlation and structural equation models (SEM) were used. This technique consists of multiple regression analysis and factor analysis and analyses the structural relationship between the underlying structures and the measured variables. The results indicated a significant relationship between the supply chains that have a loop from the following perspectives: economic motivations, customer awareness, environmental legislation, and sustainability. By increasing financial reasons, customer awareness and environmental legislation, sustainability will increase as they all move in the same direction. Therefore, the overall effect of a closed-loop supply chain is positive and significant. 2. Barriers and influencing factors in the implementation of circular economy in Slovenian road transportKristijan Brglez, Mateja Čuček, Andjelko Andy Kober, Rebeka Kovačič Lukman, 2024, izvirni znanstveni članek Opis: The European Union’s commitment to sustainable development, exemplifed by the Green Deal and the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, highlights the importance of the circular economy, especially for road transport companies. This study examines the current state of circular economy practices in Slovenian road transport through an inquiry of 151 logistic companies. Utilizing principal component analysis, fve key factors infuencing circular economy implementation were identifed: knowledge and competences, company practices, strategies, regional development, and market presence. Additionally, seven barriers were noted: lack of knowledge, fnancial constraints, time limitations, space constraints, limited technology, management issues, and supply chain coordination challenges. Findings suggest that circular practices are often secondary to business proftability, with fnancially stable companies more likely to adopt these practices. Success in circular economy implementation requires investments in innovative technologies, capacity building, and strong management support. Companies in more developed regions tend to adopt circular practices due to better access to knowledge and incentives. These insights provide a foundation for future research, including comparative studies across transport sector in European Union and globally. 5. Closed-loop supply chain and impacts on sustainability, comprehending logistics sustainability capacity building : dialogues, paradoxes and innovationLobna Tag el Sheikh, 2024, doktorska disertacija Opis: This thesis focuses on creating a framework for evaluating the influence of closed-loop on supply chain performance in the case of petrochemical industry in the Egyptian context, with a focus to test the influence of sustainability on the supply chain performance, to investigate the function of sustainability as a mediator between reverse logistics and supply chain performance, and evaluate the impact of closed-loop supply chains (environmental legislation, customer awareness and economic motivations) on sustainable development. The gathering of primary data helped the current study's goals get accomplished. Surveys are used to gather data to estimate how reverse logistics impacts the effectiveness of the supply chain. The employees of supply chain companies in Egypt received the surveys from the researcher. The study's findings indicate a strong link between sustainability and reverse logistics. Additionally, there is a marginally significant correlation between supply chain performance and sustainability. The outcomes also showed that the closed-loop supply chain has little influence on supply chain efficiency and sustainability. Furthermore, there is a marginally significant association between supply chain effectiveness and reverse logistics. The results also revealed that sustainability has a function in supply chain performance and reverse logistics. 8. A conceptual model for measuring a circular economy of seaports: a case study on Antwerp and Koper portsRebeka Kovačič Lukman, Kristijan Brglez, Damjan Krajnc, 2022, izvirni znanstveni članek Opis: This paper introduces a conceptual model for evaluating seaports’ acceleration towards the circular economy. The model is based on the identification and definition of circular economy indicators, weighted according to the 9 R-strategy transitions towards the circular economy. We have employed the analytical hierarchy process for weight detection and further calculations of the final seaport circularity value. Our results suggest conceptual validity and provide a detailed insight into the circular activities of the seaports from the indicators, as well as 9 Rs and sustainability perspectives. 9. A conceptual model for a circular city : a case study of Maribor, SloveniaKristijan Brglez, Matjaž Perc, Rebeka Kovačič Lukman, 2024, izvirni znanstveni članek Opis: Cities play a crucial role in achieving sustainable development. Decision-makers require assistance in developing city transformation plans amidst the emergence of various city models. A content analysis using concept mapping was conducted to examine smart, circular, and green city models. The analysis, supported by Leximancer, revealed that city models are evolving by adopting benefcial solutions from competitors, refecting a strong focus on sustainable development. Additionally, twentyfour research areas essential for implementing a circular city were identifed and validated. Furthermore, a conceptual model for a circular city was developed, incorporating the Defne-Measure-Analyse-Improve-Control tool and a problem-solving system. Testing the model on Maribor highlighted challenges in monitoring the transition towards circularity. The study validates the established model but emphasises the need for further research and case studies to verify its practicality. This scientifc research enhances the understanding of city models and their evolution towards sustainability, providing valuable insights for decision-makers and urban planners. 10. The complexity and interconnectedness of circular cities and the circular economy for sustainabilityKristijan Brglez, Matjaž Perc, Rebeka Kovačič Lukman, 2023, izvirni znanstveni članek Opis: In our study, we are evaluating the dynamic interplay between circular cities and the circular economy, revealing connections shaped by new research insights, using Web of Science database. We have in depth analysed 671 publications from 1990 to mid- 2023, employing Leximancer and VOSviewer tools. Our analysis uncovered key themes, including buildings, waste management, value chains, and sustainable development, linking the circular cities concept and circular economy framework. Emerging research trends, such as urban metabolism, urban mining, governance models, the built environment, sustainability benchmarks, and value chain management, signify deliberate shifts towards higher circular development and implementation. These trajectories harmonise with overarching sustainable development goals. Contemporary research emphasises urban mining, circular indicators, adaptive resource reuse, and urban structure regeneration. This focus facilitates transitioning from linear models to heightened circularity within urban contexts. Research inclination is shifting from traditional economic and environmental concerns towards holistic urban configurations that prioritise social integration, communal well-being, and the dynamics of the social economy. Through this analytical expedition, we offer novel insights that enhance our understanding of the intricate symbiosis between circular cities and the circular economy. Our findings provide a scientific foundation for formulating targeted strategies by decision-makers and guiding urban landscapes towards transformative trajectories aligned with sustainable development objectives and sustainable cities.
