Hybrid polylactic-acid–pectin aerogels : synthesis, structural properties, and drug release

Opis: Wound-dressing materials often include other materials stimulating wound healing. This research describes the first formulation of biodegradable hybrid aerogels composed of polylactic acid and pectin. The prepared hybrid material showed a highly porous structure with a surface area of 166 +/- 22.6 m(2)center dot g(-1). The addition of polylactic acid may have decreased the surface area of the pure pectin aerogel, but it improved the stability of the material in simulated body fluid (SBF). The pure pectin aerogel showed a high swelling and degradation ratio after 3 h. The addition of the polylactic acid prolonged its stability in the simulated body fluid from 24 h to more than one week, depending on the amount of polylactic acid. Biodegradable aerogels were loaded with indomethacin and diclofenac sodium as model drugs. The entrapment efficiencies were 63.4% and 62.6% for indomethacin and diclofenac sodium, respectively. Dissolution of both drugs was prolonged up to 2 days. Finally, sodium percarbonate and calcium peroxide were incorporated into the bioaerogels as chemical oxygen sources, to evaluate oxygen generation for potential wound healing applications.

Opis: Given the urgency to combat climate change and ensure environmental sustainability, this review examines the transition to net-zero emissions in chemical and process industries. It addresses the core areas of carbon emissions reduction, efficient energy use, and sustainable practices. What is new, however, is that it focuses on cutting-edge technologies such as biomass utilization, biotechnology applications, and waste management strategies that are key drivers of this transition. In particular, the study addresses the unique challenges faced by industries such as cement manufacturing and highlights the need for innovative solutions to effectively reduce their carbon footprint. In particular, the role of hydrogen as a clean fuel is at the heart of revolutionizing the chemical and process sectors, pointing the way to cleaner and greener operations. In addition, the manuscript explores the immense importance of the European Green Deal and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) for the chemical industry. These initiatives provide a clear roadmap and framework for advancing sustainability, driving innovation, and reducing the industry's environmental impact, and are a notable contribution to the existing body of knowledge. Ultimately, alignment with the European Green Deal and the SDGs can bring numerous benefits to the chemical industry, increasing its competitiveness, promoting societal well-being, and supporting cross-sector collaboration to achieve shared sustainability goals. Food Waste to Energy through Innovative Coupling of CHP and Heat Pump

Opis: This paper presents the conceptual design of a technological solution for the efficient conversion of food waste into heat and power. The distribution and composition of food loss and waste at different stages of the food supply chain in Slovenia and their potential for biogas production were determined. It was found that more than 50% of food waste comes from households. Therefore, a small plant was designed to convert food waste into biogas, which was innovatively coupled with a combined heat and power (CHP) unit and a heat pump. This doubles the amount of heat generated compared to conventional cogeneration. Based on the capacity of a micro commercial CHP unit, 3330 households (about 8000 residents) would supply food waste. The heat generated could replace 5% of the natural gas used for domestic water heating. The payback period would be 7.2 years at a heat price of about 80 EUR/MWh, however, for municipalities with more than 40,000 inhabitants the payback period would be reduced to less than 3 years. The cost price of the heat generated by this system would be about 25 EUR/MWh, taking into account the government subsidy for the operation of the CHP unit.

Dynamic characterisation of novel three-dimensional axisymmetric chiral auxetic structure

Opis: The study presents an extensive mechanical and computational characterisation of novel cellular metamaterial with axisymmetric chiral structure (ACS) at different strain rates. The Direct Impact Hopkinson Bar (DIHB) testing device was used for impact testing up to 21 m/s striker speed, which was insufficient to reach the shock deformation regime. Thus, using computational simulations to estimate the structure behaviour at high strain rates was necessary. Experimental and computational results showed that all ACS structures exhibit a nominal stress–strain relationship typical for cellular materials. As the loading conditions shifted to a dynamic regime, the micro–inertia effect became increasingly pronounced, leading to a corresponding rise in structure stiffness. The Poisson's ratio in all ACS increases gradually, making them superior to traditional cellular materials, which experience a sudden increase in Poisson's ratio during loading. Additionally, the study found that the structures exhibited a rise in the auxetic effect with an increase in strain rate, highlighting the benefits of axisymmetric structures in high-loading regimes. Overall, the obtained results provide valuable insights into the mechanical properties of ACS under different loading regimes and will contribute to further design improvements and the fabrication of novel ACS metamaterials.

Green Processing of Neat Poly(lactic acid) Using Carbon Dioxide under Elevated Pressure for Preparation of Advanced Materials : A Review (2012–2022)

Opis: This review provides a concise overview of up-to-date developments in the processing of neat poly(lactic acid) (PLA), improvement in its properties, and preparation of advanced materials using a green medium (CO2 under elevated pressure). Pressurized CO2 in the dense and supercritical state is a superior alternative medium to organic solvents, as it is easily available, fully recyclable, has easily tunable properties, and can be completely removed from the final material without post-processing steps. This review summarizes the state of the art on PLA drying, impregnation, foaming, and particle generation by the employment of dense and supercritical CO2 for the development of new materials. An analysis of the effect of processing methods on the final material properties was focused on neat PLA and PLA with an addition of natural bioactive components. It was demonstrated that CO2-assisted processes enable the control of PLA properties, reduce operating times, and require less energy compared to conventional ones. The described environmentally friendly processing techniques and the versatility of PLA were employed for the preparation of foams, aerogels, scaffolds, microparticles, and nanoparticles, as well as bioactive materials. These PLA-based materials can find application in tissue engineering, drug delivery, active food packaging, compostable packaging, wastewater treatment, or thermal insulation, among others.

»KO JAKOBOVA POT POKLIČE« – Sodobna romanja skozi motive in identifikacijske procese: primer slovenskih romarjev poti El Camino : primer slovenskih romarjev poti El Camino

Opis: Zaključno delo se ukvarja z romarskim turizmom. Dosedanje študije, ki so se ukvarjale z izkušnjo romanja, so se ločeno in partikularno ukvarjale bodisi z motivi za odhod na romanja na eni strani ali s spoznanji in transformacijami po prehojeni poti na drugi. V nasprotju s tem in na primeru slovenskih romarjev poti El Camino poskušamo zaobjeti kompleksno realnost romanj ter osvetliti različne vidike romanja kot procesa skupaj z njegovo reprezentacijo v javnih diskurzih. Zaključno delo skozi kombinacijo dveh analiz – kritične diskurzivne analize medijskih reprezentacij romanj v avtobiografskih knjigah in analizo intervjujev s slovenskimi romarji – ponuja vpogled v diskurze, ki osmišljajo romanje, in subjektivne procese romarjev samih pred, med in po romanju. Ugotavljamo, da se romanje v analiziranih tekstih upodablja skozi številne diskurze: diskurz poklicanosti na pot, diskurz odpovedi drugim identitetam in spojitev s potjo, diskurz umika in refleksije, diskurz razmejevanja med pravimi in nepravimi romarji, diskurz osebne transformacije in diskurz poti kot nekaj nedokončanega. Prav tako med ugotovitvami izpostavljamo ključne elemente procesa separacije (fizično dokazovanje, soočanje s spremembami, iskanje odgovorov, prekinitev rutine), izkušnje poti (fizični napor, čustva, terapevtska hoja in odnos s soromarji) in transformacije ob vrnitvi domov (ojačano samozavedanje, sprememba prioritet in opolnomočenje), kot jih prepoznavajo slovenski romarji El Camina.

Učinkovitost različnih načinov postavitve protiinsektne mreže za obvladovanje plodove vinske mušice (drosophila suzukii) pri pridelavi ameriških borovnic (vaccinium corymbosum) in malin (rubus idaeus) : diplomsko delo

Opis: PVM je pomemben škodljivec jagodičastega sadja. Veliko ekonomsko škodo povzroča predvsem v nasadih ameriških borovnic in malin. V letu 2023 smo v poskusnem sadovnjaku infrastrukturnega centra KIS na Brdu pri Lukovici izvedli poskus, kjer smo spremljali vpliv protiinsektne mreže na nalet PVM v nasadih ameriških borovnic in malin. Poskus smo izvajali s pomočjo prehranskih vab za ulov PVM, ki smo jih postavili med grme ameriških borovnic, ki so bili zavarovani s protiinsektno mrežo, in maline na prostem. Vabe smo menjavali v 5- do 8-dnevnih časovnih intervalih in v vzorcih prešteli število PVM, ki smo jih ločili glede na spol. Opravili smo tudi dva poskusa inkubacije plodov malin in borovnic, v katerih smo po 14 dneh inkubacije prešteli izlegle PVM. Iz rezultatov je razvidno, da je lateralni mrežnik dober način preprečevanja naleta PVM na maline in borovnice.

Starvation hardiness as preadaptation for life in subterranean habitats

Opis: Most subterranean habitats, especially caves, are considered extreme environments, mainly because of the limited and erratic food supply and constant darkness. In temperate regions, many climatic conditions, such as temperature and air humidity, are periodically less adverse or even more favourable in caves than the harsh seasonal weather on the surface. Accordingly, many animal species search for hibernacula in caves. These overwintering, non-specialized subterranean species (nontroglobionts) show various modes of dormancy and ongoing development. Since they do not feed, they all undergo periodic starvation, a preadaptation, which might evolve in permanent starvation hardiness, such as found in most specialized subterranean species (troglobionts). To this end, we performed a comparative analysis of energy-supplying compounds in eleven most common terrestrial non-troglobiont species during winter in central European caves. We found highly heterogeneous responses to starvation, which are rather consistent with the degree of energetic adaptation to the habitat than to overwintering mode. The consumption of energy-supplying compounds was strongly higher taxa-dependant; glycogen is the main energy store in gastropods, lipids in insects, and arachnids rely on both reserve compounds. We assume that permanent starvation hardiness in specialized subterranean species might evolved in many different ways as shown in this study.

Implementacija informacijsko-telekomunikacijskega sistema policije v schengenski informacijski sistem 1. in 2. generacije : diplomsko delo visokošolskega študijskega programa Varnost in policijsko delo

Opis: V diplomskem delu smo podrobneje raziskali problematiko implementacije informacijsko-telekomunikacijskega sistema policije v schengenski informacijski sistem 1. in 2. generacije. Opisali smo njegov razvoj, pravne in varnostne podlage, v večji meri (globalnem delu) pa smo se osredotočili na tehnološki vidik, kjer smo podrobneje opisali hrbtenično omrežje schengenskega informacijskega sistema, imenovanega Sisnet, ki predstavlja temelj stabilnega in zanesljivega prenosa informacij, nujno potrebnih za uspešno delovanje slovenske policije. Širitev Evropske unije je privedla do razširitve schengenskega informacijskega sistema, tehnološki napredek in zahtevnejše aplikacije pa so pospešili zamenjavo oziroma nadgradnjo strojne in programske opreme ITSP. Prikazali smo namen in vlogo ITSP ter njegovo nadgradnjo, potrebno za vključitev in izpolnjevanje schengenskih priporočil. S tem posegom bo povečana njegova zanesljivost, razpoložljivost in varnost. Posebna pozornost velja varnostnim vidikom, saj so vse povezave kriptografsko zaščitene s posebno tehnično opremo. Namen je zagotoviti nemoten dostop do podatkov in operativno delo uporabnikov ter neprekinjeno povezavo do mednarodnih informacijskih sistemov (SIS II, VIS, EES, ETIAS, ECRIS, Eurodac, Europol, Interpol). Opisana interoperabilnost med obsežnimi IT sistemi Unije omogoča prav to, da se ti sistemi medsebojno dopolnjujejo in razvijajo. Naloga ponuja bralcu usmeritve in načine za oceno in nadaljnje razmišljanje o povečevanju stabilnosti in učinkovitosti ITSP in integraciji v SIS. Globalizacija je prišla tudi k nam, mi pa jo moramo izkoristiti le toliko, da bo policijsko omrežje še bolj varno in poenoteno. Združevanje svetovnih policijskih računalniških baz bo kmalu postalo realnost.
