EKOFEMINISTIČEN LITERARNO-KRITIČEN PRISTOP K ROMANU GO TELL IT ON THE MOUNTAIN JAMESA BALDWINA
Nina Granda, 2015, diplomsko delo

Za dokaz cilja, dokazati povezavo med okoljskimi vprašanji, socialnimi vrednotami in zatiranjem smo za analizo izbrali roman Jamesa Baldwina Go Tell it on the Mountain.

Hybridity and Mimicry in V. S. Naipaul The Mimic Men
Tatjana Zagorc, 2015, diplomsko delo

Opis: This graduation thesis explores the themes of hybridity and mimicry in V. S. Naipaul’s novel The Mimic Men within the categories of displacement, race, identity, culture, and religion. During colonialism, different cultures in contact affecting each other became hybridized. Hybridity was comprehended as various abhorrent discriminatory practices of the colonial rule, which were implemented in order to fortify the superiority of the West and to preserve the notions of a hierarchy of cultures. One of the strategies was creation of mimic men, who while mimicking English manners, morals and values would still be in a less worthy position because of their origin. However, mimicry carries its doubleness seen as a form of social control as well as a doubt in presented reality and represents a turning-point, a threat to authenticity, uniqueness and supremacy of colonizer and dominant culture. The novel mirrors the influence of the colonial rule on the formation of the protagonist’s hybrid identity and his mimicry.

Updating Romance: Women in Traditional Romance Fiction Vs Women in Contemporary Romance Fiction
Nina Košir, 2016, diplomsko delo

Opis: Romance fiction is one of the popular fiction genres. It focuses on the romantic relationship of two characters and it must have a satisfactory ending, the ‘happily-ever-after’. While the genre follows the familiar plot line, it has also depicted the current society and social norms. The graduation thesis is an insight on the historical development of romance fiction, the emergence of its subgenres, its popularity with readers and gradual acceptance by the critics. Considering that it is a genre mainly written for and by women, the thesis focuses on women readers and women characters. In order to present the similarities and difference between a Traditional Romance novel and a Contemporary Romance novel, Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen and the Austen Addicts series by Victoria Connelly are compared.

BEHAVIORAL SHIFTS IN THE TRANSLATIONS OF SELECTED PICTURE BOOKS
Metka Lovrin, 2015, magistrsko delo

Opis: The purpose of the MA thesis was to explore three English picture books (Sometimes I Like to Curl up in a Ball, The Slurpy Burpy Bear and The Gruffalo) and their Slovene translations (Včasih se rad kotalim kakor žoga, Rigajoči medved and Zverjasec) in regard to inappropriate child behavior which is usually deemed socially unacceptable by adults. Therefore, the aim of my qualitative research was to scrutinize such behavioral occurrences by using comparative and hermeneutic analysis, and to provide inductive reasons with thick description as to why these translation shifts occurred. The empirical part, in which I analyzed relevant sample passages in verbal (and visual) context, has led me to three major categories: “Discrepancy between Childish Authenticity and Social Values”, “Politeness” and “Demonization”. These revealed that corrective changes cannot be applied to Slovene picture book translation in general, but are subject to the individual translator’s child image.
Ključne besede: Picture book, translation, comparative analysis, inappropriate behavior, child image.

Comparing Shakespeare`s Othello to Three Film Adaptations
Alenka Gomivnik, 2015, diplomsko delo

Opis: William Shakespeare's plays have had countless adaptations on stage and film, because his 16th century plays can still be made modern and interesting nowadays. They can be adapted to the modern world or played out in costumes and settings appropriate for their original contexts. This thesis will explore whether the temporal and cultural context alters the way the play is interpreted over decades. That is why the thesis will deal with three films: The Tragedy of Othello: The Moor of Venice, directed by Orson Welles, made in 1952; Othello, directed by Oliver Parker, made in 1995; and O, directed by Tim Blake Nelson, made in 2001. Each screenwriter and director has their own vision of a story they are trying to tell, whether it be an adaptation, appropriation or an original work. This thesis will explore whether the main theme of Othello remained intact across all three adaptations or whether, despite being changed to some extent, the adaptation can still be recognised as Othello.

Stylistic comparison of the original and Slovene translation of Douglas Adams's The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy
Jure Cehner, 2015, diplomsko delo

Opis: An author's style can sometimes be as important as the content itself. One could argue it is one of the fundamental components in fiction, and it can make or break a good book. However, as much as we enjoy it, it can be hard to define. We know it is present and it can make us feel a range of emotions, but what causes the emotions on a linguistic level is not easily answered. Douglas Adams’ novel The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy is a mixture of science fiction and comedy. Comedic effect is prevalent throughout the book and is achieved by several linguistic devices. The optimal way to study one’s writing style is to break it down in to smaller components, and in the case of this thesis to proper names, nonce words and several figures of speech. Alojz Kodre, the Slovene translator of the book, holds a Master’s degree in Physics, therefore I assumed he was more capable of bringing the astronomical concepts and technical jargon to the Slovene reader than a translator with no knowledge of astrophysics. The purpose of my thesis was also to find out whether he had been successful at not only accurately conveying meaning but also Adams’s unique style. Not taking into account his many stylistic elements can be detrimental for the overall reading experience. The discrepancies were highlighted with skopos theory as a basis for adequacy of translations methods, both used or methods that could have been used. The skopos theory helps the translator achieve the purpose of the translation usually defined by the target audience. It is a universal theory, but I was interested whether skopos theory can be applied to style as well. The translation must serve the readership of the target culture, but the author’s style, especially if prominent such as Adams’s, should not be put in second place. To some extent the translator also needs to be faithful to the author, but where does he need to draw the line? Occasionally, one factor needs to be sacrificed; whether the author’s style for the sake of understandability or the understandability for the sake of style. Alojz Kodre seemed to favour purpose over form; sometimes for clear reasons, because preserving the author’s style would have made the translation less comprehendible, and sometimes for less obvious reasons. It is evident that the artistic aspect of the novel was not the translator’s primary concern. He, however, had very little problems with conveying the intended meaning to the target readership.

Intertextuality, Adaptation and Appropriation in Michael Cunnigham’s Novel The Hours
Špela Mosbruker, 2016, magistrsko delo

Opis: The graduation thesis presents Michael Cunningham's The Hours. The novel is a Postmodernist work, based on Virginia Woolf's modernist novel Mrs Dalloway. The thesis explores the intertextual relations between the two works and discovers features of adaptation and appropriation. The intertextual analysis is based on several original intertexts: Mrs Dalloway, Woolf’s letters and her life itself. The characteristics of The Hours as an intertextual work, as adaptation and appropriation are supported with examples from the text and with theories by Gerard Genette, Julie Sanders and Linda Hutcheon. Intertextuality is divided into quotation, allusion and paratextuality in the thesis; adaptation is illustrated with specific examples, and appropriation is discussed within the frames of a riff and other imitation features of The Hours. The thesis deals with several elements of The Hours, such as motifs, themes, names of the characters, imitation of Woolf’s style and settings which are presented as intertextual examples or/and as characteristics of adaptation and appropriation. In accordance with Postmodernist principles, the importance of the reader is stressed in order for him/her to perceive the intertextual, adaptive and appropriated features of the novel. The Hours can be perceived as intertextual work or as adaptation and/or appropriation.
Ključne besede: The Hours, Mrs Dalloway, intertextuality, adaptation, appropriation, postmodernism, modernism.

ZASVOJENOST V DVEH AMERIŠKIH DRAMAH: DOLGEGA DNE POTOVANJE V NOČ EUGENA O`NEILLA IN AVGUST V OKROŽJU OSAGE TRACY LETTS
Danijela Fratnik, 2016, diplomsko delo

Zanimalo nas bo, kako pride do zasvojenosti in kaj jo povzroči.

American Football Terminology in Slovenian: Subtitling in the Movie The Longest Yard
Ivana Williams, 2016, diplomsko delo

Opis: This paper discusses the Slovenian terminology for American football through an analysis of the Slovenian subtitles of the 2005 movie The Longest Yard that were acquired from the Slovenian version of the DVD. In light of the fact that American football is a new sport in this culture and its rules are mostly unknown, the paper includes a short description of the game. It presents subtitling as a special type of translation with its restrictions and specific challenges. The analysis of subtitles is not limited to the dialogue that relates to American football but also includes the area of rendering culture-specific elements and figures of speech into adequate text. As sports permeate into everyday life, their terminologies gain new, metaphorical meanings, and the usage of American football terminology in such contexts is briefly discussed in the last chapter.

The Modernized Characters of the Wolf and Little Red Riding Hood in Neil Gaiman's Picture Book The Wolves in the Walls
Silvija Kunst Berčič, 2016, diplomsko delo

Opis: The aim of this thesis is to investigate the influence of traditional fairy tales to contemporary stories for children and to compare their features. The thesis mainly focuses on the characters of Little Red Riding Hood and Lucy who is the protagonist in Gaiman’s picture book The wolves in the walls. Furthermore, the thesis discusses two Slovene variant versions of the fairy tale of Little Red Riding and deals with the issue of fear in modern stories. Another focus of interest are the stylistic devices which the author uses to increase and decrease the tension in the narrative. Since The Wolves in the Walls is a picture book, the thesis is interested in illustration and deals with the question how pictures and words act upon each other in this picture book.
