TEACHING READING IN A FOREIGN LANGUAGE: THE READING BADGE AS A LITERACY TOOL

Opis: Reading is a part of communication. Reading is important and the aim of reading is to understand the information given in the text. There is much information that we have to read in our everyday lives. We have to read timetables, newspapers, e-mails, text messages and information on the web; children read when they do exercises or learn. We read because we are interested in something, for fun, or to relax. Reading is a part of the learning process, as well. Reading develops knowledge of and interest in a foreign language. The Reading Badge is a movement that has successfully promoted reading quality literature in Slovenia for over 50 years; The English Reading Badge is an activity that promotes reading a foreign language. Books that are carefully chosen by the teacher provide a rich environment for both language and culture. Apart from choosing materials, the role of the teacher is to train students to use methods and techniques that contribute to better comprehension. The practical examples in the thesis are ideas that I apply with my own students. By reading various books and doing activities in connection with them, we can see how their motivation to read grows and reading improves. Wallace’s statement “We want to give learner-readers a reason for turning the page” (Wallace 151) is more than appropriate here, since it encourages good work on the area of reading.

Analysis of allusions to popular culture in Harold Pinter's Old Times

Opis: The diploma paper examines some of the allusions that are made by the characters in the play Old Times. The analysis of popular culture is based on literary and internet sources, as well as various documentaries, therefore providing the historical background of the songs, films and public figures mentioned in the play. The work discusses how Harold Pinter used the allusions to the songs as a technique of the musical and as a homage to Noël Coward; why the film Odd Man Out is important and how its actors resemble the characters in the play; and also, how Pinter used the symbolism of W. B. Yeats, Greta Garbo, Orson Welles and Emily Brontë to depict the characteristics of his own characters. On the one hand, the allusions in Old Times are a hint towards the understanding of the play; on the other, they can be seen as Pinter’s in-jokes, comprehensible only to those who are familiar with them. The allusions were written for posterity to study and are Pinter’s tribute to old times.

KULTURNI IN LINGVISTIČNI VPLIV EVROPEJSKO-DOMORODSKEGA STIKA: ROMAN ARMINA WIEBEA, TATSEA

Opis: Predmet diplomskega dela je roman Tatsea avtorja Armina Wiebea. Čeprav fantazijskega žanra, roman sloni na zgodovinskem obdobju evropejsko-domorodskega stika, ki je spodbudil trgovanje s krznom. To zgodovinsko obdobje je imelo velik kulturni in lingvistični vpliv na domorodno populacijo Severne Amerike. Predstavitev tega vpliva v romanu poteka skozi osrednjo domorodno knjižno osebo Tatseo in velja za osrednjo temo te študije. V namen preučevanja kulturnega in lingvističnega vpliva evropejsko-domorodskega stika je bila izvedena zgodovinska raziskava o avtorju in njegovem romanu, o evropejsko-domorodskem stiku, trgovini s krznom, o predmetih trgovanja, o domorodski populaciji, še posebej o Dogrib ljudstvu in njihovi kulturi. Izsledki raziskave so povezani z zgodbo romana skupaj s stilistično preučitvijo in predstavitvijo različnih literarnih tehnik, s katerimi je Wiebe prikazal prvi stik in trgovanje s krznom. Med takšne tehnike spadajo defamiliarizacija, vpeljava domorodnih jezikov, podrobni opisi, komparacije, ponavljanja in senzorične podrobnosti. Opremljena z zgodovinskim in vsebinskim ozadjem sem ugotovila, da sta prvi stik in trgovina s krznom spremenila tradicionalni domorodski način življenja in razmišljanja z nepopravljivimi posledicami v domorodni populaciji, socialni organizaciji, tehnologiji, jeziku in kulturi.

Translation of Swearwords in Literary Autobiographies: The Case of Miles Davis

Opis: My thesis focuses on swearwords in the autobiography of Miles Davis. I define them, explain their function and compare swearwords in the original and the translation. My attempt was to argue the appropriateness of the translation and I used the dictionary of Slovene language (SSKJ) and results from the corpora Fidaplus to provide support for my claims. Context and connotation were among the most important criteria, since these often ruled out a literal translation because they are not used in the same manner in Slovene as in English. A deeper analysis was done on three swearwords: motherfucker, nigger and bitch. The first represents the most difficult challenge for the translator, because it is used in several different ways and can take on numerous functions. A translation for the word does not exist; therefore, the translator had to find several other translation solutions. The analysis has shown that the translator tried to keep one translation solution per function of the word, e.g., pizdun when the word was used to refer to people, and pizdarija when the referent was an object or a situation. However, translating motherfucker often demanded a certain degree of creativity from the translator because it was also used to refer to women or even Davis’ own father, as a means for comparison and as an adjective. It is difficult to find consistent solutions in these cases; therefore, the translator had to adapt his translation to individual cases. Nigger itself was not as challenging as the previous word, because črnuh has already been established as a prototypical translation in Slovene. Albeit several possible translations, e.g. mrha, kuzla, prasica, pička, translations for bitch still raised doubts in some cases. Connotations were of key importance in this case, because they had to match the original, where they could either be positive, negative or neutral. Kuzla was inappropriate in some cases, because it is always used with negative connotations in Slovene; however, mrha is used with all three connotation possibilities and therefore seems to be the most appropriate translation. Generally, I found that translating swearwords is difficult because swearing relies strongly on the originating culture, and each culture is marked by different characteristics; these characteristics, in particular, represent a challenge for the translator.

STYLISTIC COMPARISON OF THE ORIGINAL AND THE SLOVENE TRANSLATION OF HELEN FIELDING'S NOVEL BRIDGET JONES'S DIARY

Opis: In this paper, I made a stylistic comparison of Helen Fielding’s novel Bridget Jones’s Diary and its Slovene translation. The novel prides itself on a narrator’s voice that is authentic, witty and ironic. It sparkles with witty verbal formulations, completely individual wordings and parades a plethora of British celebrity names, TV-shows, shops, magazines and other typically British references. Translating such a novel is a demanding task, since the translator is expected to create a translation that gives its readers the same reading experience as that of the readers of the original. The comparison of the chosen representative examples in each of the two categories “Slang” and “Culture-bound elements” demonstrated the occurrence of translation shifts in the Slovene translation of the novel. The analysis uncovered various discrepancies in the translated examples that did not match the tone of the original. Thus, the hypothesis that translation shifts bring about changes in the stylistic value of the translation when compared to the original was confirmed. When analyzing representative examples of each category, the problematic areas of the text were highlighted and possible solutions offered and explained. The aim was to establish suitable translation procedures and practices for dealing with such issues. In this way I sought to make a contribution to the general development of translation studies.

EAST AND WEST IN R.P. JHABVALA'S HEAT AND DUST

Opis: The aim of this diploma paper is to analyze the dynamic of East and West encounter and the problems that ensue when the cultures of East and West meet in the novel Heat and Dust by Ruth Prawer Jhabvala. The author is a westerner, who lived in India for the most part of her adult life and therefore had a unique position of insider – outsider. She is able to observe the dynamic from a detached point of view. She uses orientalist discourse that puts West above East, but because Jhabvala uses irony, she mocks this kind of attitude and this classifies the text as post-colonial. Within this dynamic, I also explored the relationship between men and women, as well as women in India. The relationships in the novel can not prosper because of the cultural differences, supporting the Forsterian idea that East and West can never be friends. Another aim of this diploma is to explore the background of orientalist discourse as explained by Edward Said in his book Orientalism. Said explains the development of orientalism and how the orientalist discourse feeds it.

PRIPRAVLJENOST 1. RAZREDOV OSNOVNE ŠOLE ZA UVEDBO ANGLEŠČINE: EVALVACIJA RAZREDA IN UČBENIKOV

Opis: Projekt uvajanja angleščine v prvi razred osnovne šole je projekt, ki se naj bi začel v šolskem letu 2013/2014. Projekt je bil ustavljen. Raziskava je želela pokazati, kako so slovenske šole seznanjene s projektom, kakšne so njihove predhodne izkušnje z uvajanjem tujega jezika v nižjo stopnjo osnovne šole in kje zaznavajo probleme z uvajanjem. Z deskriptivno in kavzalno-neeksperimentalno metodo empiričnega pedagoškega raziskovanja so rezultati pokazali, da so osnovne šole slabo seznanjene s projektom. Ob tem je bilo nezadovoljstvo izkazano tudi znotraj postavljenih časovnih okvirov. Izvedena je bila tudi evalvacija učbenikov, ki so primerni za poučevanje angleščine v prvem razredu. Znotraj učbenikov je bila evalvacija osredotočena na ilustracijo. Kriteriji za evalvacijo ilustracij, osnovani glede na otrokov kognitivni razvoj, so bili razdeljeni na: estetsko analizo, analizo spolnih stereotipov, semiotično analizo in likovno analizo. Evalvacija je pokazala, da ilustracije potrebujejo popravke glede na opredeljene kriterije.

THE HOLOCAUST THROUGH INNOCENT EYES IN TWO NOVELS: THE BOY IN THE STRIPED PYJAMAS AND NUMBER THE STARS

Opis: My graduation thesis focuses on two novels: Lois Lowry's Number the Stars and John Boyne's The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas. The time setting of both novels is during the Holocaust, which also plays a big part in the fates of the characters. At the beginning a historical background is explained, as well as criticism of Boyne's novel. Then a short overview of trends towards writing about social issues in children's books is given. The main part of the graduation thesis is explaining my initial thesis that Boyne and Lowry use a special type of innocence in their works to highlight the horrors of the Holocaust. The process of proving the thesis involved in-depth study of both works, where it was discovered that innocence in their works is embodied in the child protagonists and their naïve, innocent, brave and sometimes ignorant views on the given situations.

MILTON'S SAMSON AGONISTES: A COMPARATIVE APPROACH TO THE CHARACTER OF SAMSON

Opis: The graduation thesis presents Samson Agonistes, written by John Milton. The basics of this drama are taken from the biblical book of Judges. The main aim of this diploma is to compare the original story of Samson described in the biblical Book of Judges to John Milton’s Samson Agonistes. We will focus on parallels and differences in the two versions and how the poet himself is reflected in both of them. Milton and Samson shared some similar characteristics which he emphasized through the dialogues. Still, he put more emphasis on the poetic value of the poem than on historical accuracy of the story.
