ESTETSKA FORMA IN IZRAZ SKOZI REALNOST IN FIKCIJO PRI WOOLF IN BASHKIRTSEFF
Manuela Molnar, 2012, diplomsko delo

Opis: Diplomsko delo je osredotočeno na primerjavo estetskega prepričanja resnične umetnice iz 19. stoletja Marie Bashkirtseff, in fikcijske umetnice Lily Briscoe, katero je ustvarila Virginia Woolf leta 1927. V nalogi najprej podrobneje preučimo umetniški razvoj Bashkirtseffove, kar pa storimo z vpeljavo naturalizma in impresionizma, smeri, za kateri predpostavljamo, da se izražata v njenem delu. S pomočjo Dnevnika pridobimo vpogled v njeno željo po prepoznavnosti v moško dominiranem svetu umetnosti in, kako izraža dojemanje realnosti v pisanju in slikanju. V drugem delu diplomske naloge primerjamo Bashkirtseffovo s fikcijsko umetnico Lily Briscoe, katere življenje in misli so predstavljene skozi pisateljico Virginio Woolf v romanu K svetilniku. Predpostavimo, da na dojemanje realnosti Briscoeve vpliva formalistična teorija, katera natančneje trdi, da ima slikarstvo umetniški status le če prikaže značilno formo, ki vzbudi estetski učinek.

BEING REVOLTING IN TWO LANGUAGES: ROALD DAHL'S CHILDREN'S POETRY IN SLOVENE TRANSLATION
Nuša Jeza Milošič, 2012, diplomsko delo

Opis: Translation of children's literature is a special challenge. The translator has to take into consideration specific guidelines, reader's expectations and aesthetic measures which are appropriate for the specific age, and at the same time has to face the numerous language barriers that typify children's poetry. Poetry in a wider sense as well as children's poetry contains many elements that could represent a difficulty for the translator. Such elements are rhyme, rhythm, meter and sound figures; the latter are especially frequent in children's literature and children's poetry. One additional challenge for the translator is translation of puns in children's literature which are often culturally determined. Translators, like authors, play an important role in the development of children's literature. Owing to them, young readers across the world know the classic characters of children's literature, such as Pippi Longstocking, Winnie-the-Pooh and others. The purpose of this diploma paper is to investigate whether the Slovene translation of Revolting Rhymes has the same effect among Slovenian readers as the original. By analysing Roald Dahl's work Revolting Rhymes and its Slovene translation, I want to establish the difficulties that a translator encounters when translating children's poetry. Throughout my diploma paper, I do not take sides with any translation school; my goal is to analyse the original and the translation, compare similarities and differences and to provide my own conclusions and solutions. I took into consideration various aspects: meaning, imagery and idiom, tone, translation shifts, elements of poetic language (figures of speech, especially sound figures), lexical categories, fairytale characteristics, meaning of original illustrations etc.

PREVAJANJE NAPISOV POD SLIKAMI V REVIJI NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC
Tine Manfreda, 2012, diplomsko delo

V zaključku so ponujene izboljšave in razlage.

Defamiliarization of social norms and breaking stereotypes on autism in The Speed of Dark
Špela Pačnik, 2012, diplomsko delo

Opis: Lately there has been a visible increase in the number of fictional autistic characters. These representations of autism, on the one hand, help in spreading the awareness of autism among people, but may also lead to false beliefs about autistic society, on the other. The thesis is an attempt to explore the way Elizabeth Moon represents the autistic mind in her novel The Speed of Dark. I will examine how the literary technique of defamiliarization contributes to her highly realistic portrayal of an individual with autism, especially to the way he perceives social norms. I will also prove that her novel challenges several stereotypes about autism.

Historical and Linguistic Elements in the Novel of Slavery The Price of a Child
Cita Konec, 2012, diplomsko delo

Opis: The paper presents the contemporary novel of slavery written by Lorene Cary, and published in 1995. The novel is based on the actual story of Jane Johnson, an escaped slave, and follows two events from Johnson's life. The Price of a Child includes many other historical facts, mentions several notable people, societies and movements of the antebellum era. The paper begins with the explanation of the term "neo-slave" narrative, and argues for the appropriateness of the term as a classification for The Price of a Child. The setting of the novel, plot summary and analysis of characters is presented prior to the two main sections of the paper, "Historical Elements" and "Linguistic Elements". The paper examines the historical facts in the novel, determines the extent of their historical accuracy, and analyses the literary dialect, which presents several stable features of the African American Vernacular English in direct discourse.

Michelle Gadpaille, 2011, objavljeni znanstveni prispevek na konferenci

Opis: The paper presents one model for a first-year lesson in the Department of English Studies, a lesson that encourages creativity among students in a class combining literature, language and cultural studies.
