Teaching writing skills in English for tourism by employing travel writing
Jasna Potočnik Topler, 2021, independent scientific component part or a chapter in a monograph

Abstract: This chapter examines teaching writing skills in English for Tourism by employing travel writing, which is not only a tool for teaching linguistic skills, but also encourages students to develop research interests and storytelling techniques. When travel writing was introduced to undergraduate and MA students during the English lessons the role of languages in Tourism, Tourism Discourse and Literary Tourism was also discussed with them. As part of the English assignment, students were asked to produce their own travel writing texts, which were discussed, reviewed by their teacher, re-written and – in the case of Master students – at the final stage, also published as an example of a teaching and learning experiment. Thus, this chapter presents travel writing as a successful method of developing travel writing skills inside the English for Specific Purposes classes.

Building the ethnopôle : eliciting and sharing ethnobotanical knowledge in tourism development
Charlie Mansfield, Jasna Potočnik Topler, 2021, original scientific article

Abstract: With rising tourism interest in cultural heritage, destination management organisations, museums and other cultural institutions are seeking methods of unlocking the intangible cultural heritage of local residents and sharing that before it is lost. This is specific knowledge of the uses and practices of disappearing urban space, of plants and foodstuffs, of clothing and of work practices that were more in-tune with local, sustainable production. With the emergence of post-humanism, based on Deleuze's reading of Spinoza's ethics, this contribution outlines new methodologies in building the ethnopôle, and proposes a model for transmission that explores narrative knowing through literary travel writing for a new public.

Literary walking tours as a form of well-being : Slovene writers' trail and the Prežihov Voranc route
Jasna Potočnik Topler, 2022, independent scientific component part or a chapter in a monograph

Abstract: The concept of literary tourism is becoming increasingly interesting, not only for researchers and students, but also for tourism practitioners and destination managers, who are interested in the supply of and demand for this sub-type of cultural tourism. In recent decades, it has become an important niche in tourism. Especially in rural areas it is perceived as useful in supporting the existent tourism activities and helping to develop new ones. Not only is it prose, drama and poetry that inspire people to become literary tourists, but also biographies and autobiographies, screen adaptations of literary works, theatre performances, etc. Literary walking tours have emerged as a wellreceived type of literary tourism product, which have been associated to well-being. Some of them are also included in the most popular tour guides, such as, for example, The Lonely Planet.

Rhetoric for Tourism Business : Worksheets
Jasna Potočnik Topler, 2021

Abstract: Rhetoric is the skill of persuasion. It has accompanied people for millennia, and the foundations of rhetorical theory were laid by the Ancient Greek thinker Aristotle. Through historical periods it has undergone development, rises and also falls. Today we are increasingly aware of the importance of familiarity with this skill in very broad fields of public and private life, for ultimately it contributes to better reading literacy of individuals and society. One of the aims of teaching rhetoric at the Faculty of Tourism of the University of Maribor is to prepare students to analyse and more accurately and precisely formulate arguments and persuasive techniques in everyday life, ranging from personal conversations to the media, study situations and the composition of expert texts. Equally it aims to familiarise students with various discourses, to teach them independent, more self-confident, clear, structured and critical expression of views and to formulate structured short and long texts. The booklet contains work sheets that will serve as support points in aiding rhetoric in business communication, when the focus is on topics such as history, rhetorical genres, canons, persuasion and language. We will also focus attention on the legal aspects of communication. The publication is a translated and supplemented edition of worksheets published in 2018.
