Becoming a mother-athlete : female athletes' transition to motherhood in Slovenia
Janja Usenik, Paul Wylleman, Saša Cecić Erpič, 2020, original scientific article

Abstract: Perceptions of incompatibility of sport and motherhood still exist within both sport and family Slovene cultures. For many female athletes starting a family means an end of their athletic careers. However, some women decide to pursue their athletic life after they become mothers. While recent media interest in mother-athletes has increased significantly, scientific research focusing on this topic is still scarce. The purpose of this study was to explore the transition of Slovene female athletes into motherhood and their experiences of combining motherhood with competitive sport. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with eight female elite athletes, who became mothers during their elite level competitive career. The results of the study revealed that mother-athletes perceived this transition as a long-term process in which motherhood and elite sport had a reciprocal effect on each other. Three transition phases characterized by changes in the participants’ holistic development were identified: (1) pre-pregnancy and pregnancy, (2) returning to competitive sport, and (3) living the life of a mother-athlete.

David Šuran, Tadej Završnik, Peter Kokol, Marko Kokol, Andreja Sinkovič, Franjo Naji, Jernej Završnik, Helena Blažun Vošner, Vojko Kanič, 2023, original scientific article

Abstract: Lipoprotein(a) (Lp(a)) is a well-recognised risk factor for ischemic heart disease (IHD) and calcific aortic valve stenosis (AVS). Methods: A retrospective observational study of Lp(a) levels (mg/dL) in patients hospitalised for cardiovascular diseases (CVD) in our clinical routine was performed. The Lp(a)-associated risk of hospitalisation for IHD, AVS, and concomitant IHD/AVS versus other non-ischemic CVDs (oCVD group) was assessed by means of logistic regression. Results: In total of 11,767 adult patients, the association with Lp(a) was strongest in the IHD/AVS group (eβ = 1.010, p < 0.001), followed by the IHD (eβ = 1.008, p < 0.001) and AVS group (eβ = 1.004, p < 0.001). With increasing Lp(a) levels, the risk of IHD hospitalisation was higher compared with oCVD in women across all ages and in men aged ≤75 years. The risk of AVS hospitalisation was higher only in women aged ≤75 years (eβ = 1.010 in age < 60 years, eβ = 1.005 in age 60–75 years, p < 0.05). Conclusions: The Lp(a)-associated risk was highest for concomitant IHD/AVS hospitalisations. The differential impact of sex and age was most pronounced in the AVS group with an increased risk only in women aged ≤75 years.

Women in Need The Nature of Social Support in an Online Community : The Nature of Social Support in an Online Community
Vanja Ida Erčulj, Tinkara Pavšič Mrevlje, 2023, original scientific article

Abstract: Some women, especially victims of violence, seek support in online groups. The objective of this research was to investigate the nature of the social support women receive in such online communities. For this purpose, all the posts from a large online support community group for women in Slovenia, Women in Need, from 2002 to the end of 2020 were retrieved and analyzed manually as well as by using a text-mining approach. The results show that women in the investigated community mostly seek informational support, spend little time actively contributing to online discussions, and rarely become engaged members of supportive groups within the focal online space. Some recommendations on how to improve the functionality of online social support sites are provided.

Slovene women writers at the beginning of the 20th century : writing from the edge
Alenka Jensterle-Doležal, 2023, professional monograph

Abstract: The monograph Slovene Women Writers at the Beginning of the 20th Century consists of eleven literary studies and an appendix containing biographies of the authors. This comparative research focuses on Slovene female authors at the beginning of Slovene modernism (the so-called “moderna” period). This monograph attempts to bring into focus forgotten female Slovene writers from this period, thus offering a critical view into the creations of Slovenian female authors of the “moderna” era (with reference to the broader fin-de-siècle period). This monograph focuses on the work of four key Slovene female authors of the “moderna” period: female prose writer and feminist Zofka Kveder (1878–1926) and the female poets Vida Jeraj (1875–1932), Ljudmila Poljanec (1874–1948), and Lili Novy (1885–1958). The book thus brings new insights into Slovene and Central European studies and comparative literary history, as well as spreading knowledge about the literary works of Slovene female authors in the wider scientific space.

Gender-Based Features of Conversations in Political Interviews : m. a. thesis
Monika Kajbič, 2022, master's thesis

Abstract: This master´s thesis examines the role of gender in political interviews. It focuses on how men and women use linguistic features in eight selected political interviews. The purpose of this study was to examine the use of the following linguistic features to see if men and women use them differently: minimal responses, hedges, tag questions, elicitation types, interruptions, silences, pauses and hogging the floor. The political interviews were transcribed according to Tannen´s transcription conventions (2007). Previous research indicates that women use the above-mentioned linguistic features to connect and show support, while men use them to dominate and have power over the conversation. The following hypotheses were tested in the study: Hypothesis 1: Women use minimal responses more than men. Hypothesis 2: Women use more hedges than men. Hypothesis 3: Women use tag questions more than men. Hypothesis 4: Men interrupt women more than women interrupt men. Hypothesis 5: Overlapping talk is used more by men than women. Hypothesis 6: Male speakers talk more than female speakers. Hypotheses 7: Men use elicitations to attack and women to support. Contrary to our expectations the results reveal that men use more minimal responses and hedges than women. By doing that they maintain their power and control over the interview. Also, women do not use more tag questions than men. On the other hand, in mixed-gender interviews women interrupt the conversation more than men. There are fewer overlaps when there are two females in the interviews compared to mixed-gender interviews. Our results also showed that men dominate the talking time. This study is limited to eight interviews; however, its findings can be used as a basis for further research in this area.

The Influence of Usernames on the Perception of Gender in Online Communication
Alen Vugrinec, 2018, master's thesis

Abstract: The aims of this master´s thesis are to determine how certain usernames influence the perception of gender on online communication and to identify possible differences between the language of men and women used in online communication in the form of a forum. The theoretical part discusses at first the internet in general; its origins, how communication came to be on it, the characteristics of internet language and differences between communication in real-life and online. Then we turn our attention to differences between the language of men and women, which can occur in either face-to-face (or written) communication or in online communication in general. The empirical part focuses on the experiment conducted for the purpose of this thesis. This part of the thesis contains the methods of the experiment, the details of it, the analysis of the communication happening on the forum and the analysis of the questionnaires given to the participants of the experiment. This is followed by the discussion of the findings/results and the concluding thoughts. The findings of the study confirm all the hypotheses set in the thesis, i.e.: Hypothesis 1: the majority of the participants will not be able to guess correctly the gender of other participants in conversations with made-up usernames (Discussion 2). Hypothesis 2: there will be differences between the language of men and women in both types of conversations regardless of the type of username used. Hypothesis 3: participants regardless of gender will add more contributions to the forum in conversations with made-up usernames (Discussion 2) because of the anonymity.

Responsibilities of pregnant women for on going pregnancy : medical aspects
Ratko Matijević, Katja Erjavec, 2016, original scientific article

Abstract: There are numerous factors known to affect the course of pregnancy and adversely impact perinatal mortality and morbidity. Some of them are avoidable and some are not. Avoidable factors can be either under responsibility of medical staff, health care systems and communities; or under responsibility of pregnant women. By modifying and changing their lifestyle, pregnant women can influence some avoidable factors and improve their pregnancy outcome. However, by ignoring them, they can cause potential damage to themselves and to their unborn child. There is no well defined responsibility for women concerning ways they influence their pregnancy outcome; they have a full right to make decisions about themselves and their unborn children, whether right or wrong. Good communication, education and understanding are essential when dealing with these issues.

Role of livestock husbandry on rural transformation in North India : a case study
Asif Iqubal, 2010, review article

Abstract: Livestock husbandry is an important source of economic activity in the agricultural sector contributing a major portion of GDP to India and improving the socio-economic conditions for people in general and rural people in particular. Livestock husbandry has been practiced, usually in rural areas, since ancient times. The increasing urbanization of the growing popula- tion and the changing food habits of people has enhanced the demand of livestock products worldwide. Thus, the world’s livestock sector is growing at an unprecedented rate in developing countries. India is one developing country that shares the largest number of livestock and has a top position in milk production in the world. The livestock in India with 185 million cattle and 98 million buffaloes possesses 20% of the world’s bovine and 14% of the world's cattle population. A micro level geographical area known as Aligarh district in north India has been selected for study. The data regarding various aspects of livestock husbandry at the grass roots level is not available in recorded form. 12 villages from the district have been selected for field survey to generate data regarding the socio economic transformation of rural people in the study region. The study revealed that livestock husbandry shows upward dynamism in terms of numbers. A positive growth of 7.5% livestock as a whole has been observed through the data analysis of two points of time i.e. 1993 and 2003. 83% of the workforce of households surveyed in the rural areas is found to be involved directly or indirectly in livestock husbandry, and it is practiced by landless, marginal and small farmers particularly.
