1. Sustainable development goals and higher education : an efficiency analysisMaja Mihaljević Kosor, 2023, original scientific article Abstract: Higher education (HE) is a significant factor in a country’s economic
prosperity and plays a vital role in addressing sustainability issues and
actively promoting sustainable development. While many EU member
countries have well-developed education systems in terms of rankings and
SDGs’ attainment, little is known about the progress of other European
countries. The goal of this research is to estimate the efficiency of higher
education in the attainment of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in
40 European countries. The method used to estimate efficiency is Data
Envelopment Analysis (DEA) with output-orientation and variable returns
to scale approach. In the final model specification, two input variables and
one output variable are used. Results indicate that the average technical
efficiency of the 40 European countries is relatively high and equal to 0.94.
Nine countries emerge as fully efficient in achieving SDG 4 with a coefficient
equal to 1. The four largest higher education systems achieved an aboveaverage efficiency score of 0.97 or higher. Six countries are recognized as
the worst performing. However, more analysis is necessary to examine the
sources of inefficiency in the worst-performing countries. Due to specific data
limitations indicated in this research, it remains a challenge to evaluate the
precise impact of higher education and its contribution to SDGs. Keywords: sustainable development goals (SDGs), higher education, data envelopment analysis, SDG4, European countries Published in DKUM: 28.05.2025; Views: 0; Downloads: 2

2. Fostering SDG Content Integration in the Economics and Business Undergraduate Curriculum: A Faculty-Driven Mapping ApproachIgor Vrečko, Maja Rožman, Karin Širec, 2024, original scientific article Abstract: The Faculty of Economics and Business (FEB UM) initiated a project to align its undergraduate study program with sustainable development principles. This involved mapping the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) within the curriculum, using recommended keywords and faculty assessments. The exercise aimed to objectively showcase current sustainability integration and to identify areas for enhanced sustainable practice infusion. The method entailed both the direct and indirect consideration of SDG content. This endeavor heightened faculty awareness and enthusiasm for incorporating the SDGs, highlighting the significance of aligning academic programs with global sustainability objectives. This study has offered a framework for similar institutions aiming to boost sustainability through curriculum mapping and active faculty engagement. 3. Innovative professional learning communities and sustainable education practices through digital transformationMaja Vičič Krabonja, Simona Kustec, Vesna Skrbinjek, Boris Aberšek, Andrej Flogie, 2024, original scientific article Abstract: Education is the most important part of sustainable society development. Traditional
approaches to permanent lifelong educator training often fail to produce lasting changes in teaching
practices (UN, Goal 4). This paper examines how educator involvement in a professional learning
community (PLC) ensures equitable quality education and promotes lifelong learning opportunities
for all and a sustainable digital transformation of the teaching and learning process. Participation in
PLC and the use of contemporary learning environments positively impact the quality of educators’
work, thereby enhancing the overall educational process. This study utilised a quantitative methodology, employing both descriptive and inferential statistics to analyse the data. Results indicate
that a balanced integration of formal PLC structures and guidance, combined with elements of a
non-formal, broader PLC and external incentives and support (such as projects), can surpass mere
exchanges of best practices, foster innovation, and support the sustainable digital transformation
of educators. This approach leads to a sustainable shift in pedagogical paradigms. The PLC_IP
model (focused on including digital technologies and effective teaching strategies) enhances collective
educator efficacy, contributing to improved teaching quality. For PLCs to achieve sustainability, they
must be dynamic entities that adapt to the evolving educational landscape, ensuring their continued
relevance and impact with rising completion rates over time. Our findings underscore the importance
of innovative PLCs in driving sustainable educational development and improvement and provide a
framework for future research and practical applications in educational settings. In addition, PLCs
can strengthen the means of implementation and revitalise the global partnership for sustainable
development (UN, Goal 17). Keywords: professional learning communities, ESD, training, sustainable changes, sustainable education, education practices, schools Published in DKUM: 27.11.2024; Views: 0; Downloads: 12

5. Transformation of the education system in agricultural advisory towards sustainability - A Case study in SloveniaMarina Nikšić, Lazar Pavić, Črtomir Rozman, 2023, original scientific article Abstract: The new role that agricultural advisory plays in innovation processes and the development of agriculture towards sustainability requires the improvement of its performance. The basic prerequisite for realizing the potential of agricultural advisory in the areas mentioned is a strongly developed education system that will enable the development of strong advisory capacities. This survey is based on three areas of the education system: organization of education, satisfaction with educators, and evaluation of education and the potential of individuals in the organization. The basic principles on which the education system is based are outdated and, therefore, inadequate for developing the performance that the new role of agricultural advisors in innovation processes requires. Multiple regression analysis results indicate that a greater evaluation of education and the potential of individuals in the organization implies greater involvement of agricultural advisors in the selection of topics that will be provided to them through education and more advanced performances of educators responsible for educating. One-factor analysis of variance (ANOVA) determined that there are no statistically significant differences, at the p < 0.05 level, in the level of perceived competence of advisors for sustainable agricultural practices depending on the frequency of attending education. 6. Strategic transition to sustainability : a cybernetic modelTjaša Štrukelj, Petya Dankova, Nomi Hrast, 2023, original scientific article Abstract: As the importance of the transition to sustainable development is increasingly recognised by individuals, organisations, and society as a whole, there is a growing need to examine its impact at micro-, meso-, and macro-levels. There is an urgent imperative to ensure the sustainability of growing economic inequalities, a degraded environment, and people living in uneven conditions in different societies. The authors, therefore, highlight the strategic role and essential contribution of organisations, and universities/higher education institutions in particular, in achieving sustainable development and the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Universities/higher education institutions play a key role in fostering entrepreneurship and innovation, and they form the crucial architecture of contemporary practices in national economies and beyond. Policy makers, university/higher education institution governors, managers, and professors shape students and create new social contexts, and these must be oriented towards sustainability. This paper aims to explore the strategic role of organisations, in particular, universities/higher education institutions, as a key link between personal and social responsibility and, thus, as a powerful enabler of sustainable development. The authors examine the strategic transition to sustainability of two higher education institutions, the University of Maribor and the University of Economics—Varna, and conduct a qualitative case study research to develop a cybernetic model of the university’s/higher education institution’s transition to sustainability, which reflects the organisation’s growing commitment to achieving the Sustainability Development Goals. The model includes seven successive stages: pre-awareness, awareness, focusing, implementation, reaching out, transparency and disclosure, and continuous improvement. The study shows that sustainable development, i.e., sustainability governance, management, and operations, are indispensable for implementing the strategic concept of sustainability in an organisation and for achieving the strategic transition to sustainability as explained in the proposed cybernetic model. 7. How much sustainable knowledge will soon-to-be experts in Slovenia have? : findings of higher education study programs’ analysisMatevž Obrecht, Lazar Pavić, 2023, published scientific conference contribution Abstract: Environmental topics are gaining more and more important both
in the European Union and in Slovenia in the last decade. Climate changes (floods, droughts, and heat waves), pollution (soil, water, and air), management of invasive species, noise pollution, food self-sufficiency, sustainable development in the field of tourism, etc. are particularly present both in
Slovenian Eastern and Western cohesion region. However, the level of knowledge about environmental challenges and competences of current experts
and leaders to effectively manage and deal with them is perceived to be too
low. The paper examines the inclusion of sustainable competences, knowledge, and skills in higher education programs in Slovenia to predict the level of sustainable knowledge. Slovenian soon-to-be professionals will be empowered by the Slovenian higher education system (Daneshjoo et al., 2020).
Analysis included the content of 956 higher education study programs on
the individual course level. In the next phase, a comprehensive comparative
analysis of the situation in the areas of higher education and environmental education was performed. The factors based on which comparison was
made are field of study, type of institution, level of study and number of subjects in the program that include some sustainable content. Non-parametric tests were used to determine statistically significant differences are the
Mann-Whitney U test and the Kruskal-Wallis H test. Keywords: sustainable development, sustainable knowledge, higher education, sustainable competences, higher education study programs Published in DKUM: 12.01.2024; Views: 344; Downloads: 26
