Labour law aspects of child labour in the information age
Mojca Tancer Verboten, 2025, independent scientific component part or a chapter in a monograph

Abstract: The article analyses the labour law aspects of child labour in the information age. It presents in detail the specific features related to the regulation of child labour and the possibilities of applying labour law legislation particularly to the work of children under the age of 15, pupils and students. Three sections are discussed: the normative regulation of child labour, the specific features of performing light work by children, the special protection provisions that apply to child labour, and the specific features related to digital child labour, which is emerging as a new form of work. The basic hypothesis in the article is that when defining child labour and the emergence of new forms of work, such as the work of information child influencers, it is necessary to regulate this appropriately in a way that takes into account the specific features of the situation of children who perform such work so that such work does not harm their safety, health, morality, education and development.

Collaboration as a soft skill in special education teachers : a systematic literature review
Assimina Tsibidaki, Aikaterini Vrachna, 2025, original scientific article

Abstract: This study explores the role of collaboration as a crucial soft skill for special education teachers (SETs), focusing on its impact on their professional development and teaching practices. Through a qualitative review of 15 studies (2012–2024), findings highlight that, while collaboration enhances inclusive education, challenges persist, including heavy workloads, large class sizes, limited training, and negative attitudes. SETs view collaboration with schools, families, and colleagues as vital to improving both teaching effectiveness and student outcomes. The study underscores the need to integrate collaborative practices into teacher preparation programs to foster professional growth and create more inclusive, supportive learning environments.

Sacrificing natural kinds : Fodor’s legacy and the unity of science
Tadej Todorović, Janez Bregant, 2025, original scientific article

Abstract: The article reevaluates Jerry Fodor’s key argument for the autonomy of the special sciences, which rests on the notion of multiple realization and the claim that special science predicates must be natural kinds. After outlining how Fodor’s view was shaped by the “syntactic” conception of scientific theories, it shows that the recent “semantic” approach in scientific theories challenges the idea that special science kinds must be natural and ontologically committing. On the semantic account, scientific models often invoke idealized or domain-specific predicates that do not have to be natural. We use Fodor’s example – Gresham’s law – to articulate a semantic perspective that preserves the unity of science: higher-level explanations can remain useful, real, and relatively autonomous without irreducible natural kinds. By “sacrificing” natural kinds, we retain the explanatory powers of the special sciences, create a simpler ontological picture of the world, and justify the modus operandi of the sciences, such as cognitive science, where knowledge from the different levels or disciplines that constitute it informs and refines our overall understanding of the world.

The inclusion of children with special needs in folklore activities in Slovenian schools with a special educational programme
Bojan Kovačič, Nejc Černela, Marta Licardo, 2025, independent scientific component part or a chapter in a monograph

Abstract: Using a representative sample (240 professionals from all 28 Slovenian primary schools with a special educational programme), we partially confirmed the hypothesis, which states that professionals who teach in schools with a special education programme agree with the statements about the inclusion of students with special needs in folklore activities. The hypothesis, which asserts that there are statistically significant differences between groups of professionals (special and rehabilitation pedagogues, special needs teachers, inclusive pedagogues, social pedagogues, teachers with special pedagogical qualifications and other pedagogical staff) regarding their agreement with statements referring to the inclusion of students with special needs in folklore activities in schools with a special education programme, was rejected based on the results obtained.

Selected Contemporary Research on Special Needs, Giftedness, and Talent in Slovenia
2025, scientific monograph

Abstract: This monograph covers an extensive array of topics related to special needs, talent, and giftedness in the Slovenian educational system. It consists of twelve insightful chapters written by twenty-three authors, mostly from the University of Maribor's Faculty of Education. Addressing a wide range of professionals, the book examines innovative research and strategies to enhance the support and education of these special populations. The topics covered include speech and language therapy, reading adaptations and adjustments to music lessons for autistic students, the inclusion of children with special needs in folklore, and the identification and support of twice-exceptional students. It also discusses student involvement in school-home cooperation, early identification of mathematically gifted children, musical talent development, dance creativity in kindergarten, multilingual reading to expand vocabulary, and classroom design to encourage artistic expression. Overall, the monograph promotes a better understanding of these populations' specific needs and encourages discussion about creating inclusive, supportive, and effective educational environments.

The role of communication skills in the development of digital literacy competences using the "DigInGreen"
Mateja Forte, Matevž Obrecht, Bojana Slomšek Šlamberger, 2024, published scientific conference contribution

Abstract: The paper deals with the field of developing communicationand digital literacy with the help of the lifelong learning model "DigInGreen" for all layers of modern society, including people with special needs. The aim of the authors is a targeted search for new solutions in the field of using digital learning and communication tools for the development of digital competences in the light of"Society 5.0". We focus on a unique way of connecting paradigms, such as: inclusive society, competences, digital, special needs, literacy and lifelong learning. We want to connect the thinking about the communicative ability, an indispensable part of which is an individual's digital literacy and point out, that the circumstances of living in a modern, but still partially exclusive society, limit the development of an individual's communicativeand digital literacy, due to a demonstrated special need or disability. We believe, that the activities we carry out,are a unique example of good practice, because they connect many scientific disciplines and fields into a modern concept of competence development without excluding or conditioning the end user. We combine the paradigms of logistics, informatics, statistics, social studies, linguistics and didactics. All the above and more represent the concept of "Society 5.0", which cannot exist as a scientific construct,if it does not consider the key aspect of one's own identification -social equality and the provision of equal opportunities.

Differences in self-regulated learning between gifted students, students with special needs and other students in Slovenian schools
Eva Kranjec, Karin Bakračevič, 2023, original scientific article

Abstract: Self-regulated learning strategies play a crucial role in learning progress and academic achievement of different groups of students. The purpose of the present study is to investigate differences in the use of self-regulatory strategies among a sample of 1,495 students, aged 12 to 15 years, representing three groups: gifted students, students with special needs, and other students. The theoretical framework for the study is Pintrich's (1991) model of self-regulated learning. Data were collected using the Motivated Strategies for Learning Questionnaire (MSLQ). Results indicated that gifted students scored significantly higher on the MSLQ subscales of motivation and learning strategies than students with special needs and other peers. Special needs students reported lower intrinsic and extrinsic goal orientation and weaker self-efficacy in learning and achievement than other students. There were no significant differences between these two groups on the MSLQ learning strategies subscales. Positive and statistically significant associations between the MSLQ subscales and final grades in three school subjects (Slovenian, mathematics, and foreign language) were also confirmed. We discuss the implications of our findings for future research and the educational context that contributes most to the development of self-regulated learning in all groups of students.

Literary works including children with special needs
Nika Vizjak Puškar, Dragica Haramija, 2023, independent scientific component part or a chapter in a monograph

Abstract: Owing to their inclusion in the education system, teachers often encounter students with special needs during their work. When working with these students, the teacher’s level of empathy is extremely important, however it is difficult to achieve if they are not familiar with how these students think and feel. One way of becoming acquainted with individuals with special needs is by becoming familiar with their thinking patterns, especially their emotional responses. The paper presents literary sources related to the topic, wherein the sources are evaluated, and the selected works are analysed. Besides the method of analysis (protagonists, supporting characters, literary space, literary time, subject, theme, motifs, narrator, structure, and plot), the descriptive method for presenting theoretical starting points and the method of synthesis in the conclusion are also used.
