Reviewing the narrative concerning the impact of population growth in Africa

Abstract: This article discusses the topic of population growth in Africa, a recurring theme in the era of climate change and the fight against CO2 emissions. The African continent is full of essential raw materials and encompasses the youngest population in the world. There is no doubt concerning the significant role it will play in global affairs, at a time when the world population is ageing, according to the UN statistics. In recent years, many policymakers have highlighted the necessity to deal with overpopulation, provoking moral controversial and basic human rights abuses. This article, however, proposes an opposite argumentation based on fresh data and emphasises the opportunities and challenges to take on, as the author considers "overpopulation" as more of a challenge than a sentence to underdevelopment. Though the paper mentions different issues linked to overpopulation, such as migration crisis, ecological sustainability and the UN Sustainable Development Goals, it concludes with a reminder of the importance of international cooperation as a solution to global issues.

Corrosion mechanisms for cemented soils in three different sulfate solutions

Abstract: In order to simulate and study the corrosion effects on the compressive strength of cemented soils that could be exposed in a polluted environment, a series of tests were conducted on cemented soil blocks cured with different concentrations of H2SO4, MgSO4, and Na2SO4 solutions. The test results show that the corrosion degree generally increases with the corrosion time and the solution concentration, while the compressive strength decreases with the increasing corrosion degree. The corrosion degree is highest for the Na2SO4 solution, followed by the MgSO4 and H2SO4 solutions. Namely, when the SO4 2- ion exists in a solution, the corrosion degree for the positive ions follows this descending order: Na+, Mg2+, and H+. X-ray diffraction (XRD) phase analyses were performed for the cemented soil samples after corrosion and ionic concentrations. The results show that the compressive strength decreases with an increase of the Mg2+ concentration in the MgSO4 solution and the Na+ concentration in the Na2SO4 solution. At the same time, the strength increases with an increase of the pH value of the H2SO4 solution. Based on the chemical analysis results, the corrosion of H2SO4 or MgSO4 solutions on cemented soils is deemed as a composite action involving the combined resolving and crystallizing corrosion processes. Furthermore, the corrosion of the Na2SO4 solution of cemented soil is a composite action consisting of dissolving and crystallizing.

Abstract: The present scientific monograph, entitled “Environmental management & audit“, is the result of three years’ work on an international project entitled “Environmental management in Russian companies – retraining courses for the sensibilization for and integration of Eco-Audit programs in corporate decision-making (RECOAUD)”. Within its more than 600 pages, the monograph features interesting texts written by 31 authors from the European Union and the Russian Federation, edited by dr. Borut Jereb, Darja Kukovič and dr. Daria Meyr. The monograph “Environmental management & audit“ is composed of four books: “Scarcity and Introduction of Environmental Management”, “Management Systems”, “Controlling and Stakeholders”, and “Environmental Assessment” (Featured Articles). These four topics reflect the complexity, heterogeneity and multidisciplinary of the project Tempus RECOAUD. The reader of the monograph gets a comprehensive overview of theoretical perspectives of environmental management and audit in the chosen areas. Furthermore, the monograph also highlights the results of research in the field of environmental management and audit as well as trends and challenges in the development of this field. Providing insight into theoretical and research findings, the monograph will prove useful to both practitioners and researchers in the field of environmental management and audit; it can also be used for study purposes.

Management of soil as a natural resource in the Savinjska statistical region in Slovenia

Abstract: Animals, plants and microorganisms could not exist without soil, because without it life on Earth would not be possible. Thus we should always be concerned with preserving the soil condition. This should be a personal, a municipal, as well as a national concern. Nevertheless, the role of soil is not sufficiently incorporated into the planning of sustainable development of the Savinjska statistical region, therefore more active approaches are needed in the field of soil management and protection (education, research, raising public awareness, soil protection programs, soil related educational excursions, etc.).

Sensing heavy metals using mesoporous-based optical chemical sensors

Abstract: Heavymetal pollution is one of the more serious environmental problems; therefore, there is a constant demand for the development of new analytical tools for its monitoring. An optical chemical sensor represents a good alternative to classical instrumental methods.The mesoporous materials used in optical chemical sensorsʼ fabrications have properties such as high porosity, exceptional adsorption capacity, tuneable 3D shape, geometry, and morphology, which enable improved limit of detection, response time, and selectivity properties of optical sensors. In this review, we firstly present the properties of mesoporous materials, provide a brief description of sensing mechanisms, and briefly discuss the importance of continuous monitoring. Recent advances in those mesoporous silica-based optical sensors used for heavy metal detection have been reported and their advantages and limitations also discussed. This review covers publications that have appeared since 2008.

Abstract: We describe a GIS-based real-time system for emergency response and management of air pollution accidents in an urban area. The system architecture emphasises the integration of meteorological, chemical and GIS data, dispersion modeling, decision-making and geo-spatial visualization. The threat zones, unsafe areas and safe traffic routes are obtained using an improved Gaussian plume model with a decision-making module and then exported to the Google Earth browser via “kml” file format. Several simulation scenarios were conducted and verified for notable industrial sites in Montenegro using recorded meteorological data. The results demonstrate that emergency response authorities can use the proposed methodology and system as a cost effective and accurate support tool in case of industrial or deliberate air pollution incidents.

Application of elemental microanalysis to elucidate the role of spherites in the digestive gland of the helicid snail Chilostoma lefeburiana

Abstract: In this case study we present an application of different analytical electron microscopic methods in biology, to elucidate their usefulness in such investigations. Using analytical electron microscopy, spherites in the digestive gland cells of the helicid snail Chilostoma lefeburiana were examined at three stages: just before the non-feeding period of over-wintering in November, in the middle of over-wintering in February and at its end in March. A detailed characterization of changes in the elemental composition of the spherites was characterized by a combination of transmission electron microscopy (TEM), energy dispersive x-ray spectroscopy (EDXS), electron energy-loss spectroscopy (EELS) and energy filtering TEM (EFTEM). During over-wintering, the spherites passed the following changes. Before over-wintering in November, they consisted of striking concentric layers of electron-dense and electron-lucent zones, while in February and March they showed clear empty zones between materials of different electron density. In November spherites, C, O, Ca, P, Cl, Fe, Si, Na, K, Mg and S were detected, whereas in February ones C, O, N, Cl, Si and S were found and only C, O, N, Si and Cl were detected in March spherites. It is suggested that the elements missing in February and March were used in different physiological processes during over-wintering, like (1) the maintenance of the appropriate elemental composition of the internal environment, (2) accumulation of non-toxic waste materials that cannot be metabolized and (3) avoiding potential intoxication by contamination with toxic metals.
