The picture book and its role in preschool mathematics educationSanja Maričić, Mirjana Stakić, 2023, original scientific article Abstract: The paper examines the role of the picture book as a learning resource in preschool mathematics education and illustrates the possibilities for its application. The paper aims to examine whether preschool teachers use picture books in preschool mathematics education, what areas of mathematics they most use these for, and whether they recognize methodological advantages to their application. Results show that half of preschool teachers use the picture book as a teaching resource in preschool mathematics education, that it is mostly used to develop the concept of natural numbers and spatial relations, as well as that teachers clearly perceive methodological advantages. 2. Explaining preferences for illustration style and characteristics in early childhoodMarijana Županić Benić, Kristina Kalić, 2019, original scientific article Abstract: The purpose of this study was to explore how children perceive the style and characteristics of illustrations in picture books. It was found that six-year-old children preferred expressionist and surrealist illustrations, whereas four-year-old children preferred expressionist and romantic illustrations. They liked illustrations mostly because they were colorful, but also because they saw familiar motifs and actions in those illustrations. Children are also likely to prefer illustrations that are textile-shaped, illustrations that resemble children’s drawings, and naive, happy illustrations. These findings are consistent with previous studies of children’s preferences for illustrations and serve as a reference point for future studies. The Modernized Characters of the Wolf and Little Red Riding Hood in Neil Gaiman's Picture Book The Wolves in the WallsSilvija Kunst Berčič, 2016, undergraduate thesis Abstract: The aim of this thesis is to investigate the influence of traditional fairy tales to contemporary stories for children and to compare their features. The thesis mainly focuses on the characters of Little Red Riding Hood and Lucy who is the protagonist in Gaiman’s picture book The wolves in the walls. Furthermore, the thesis discusses two Slovene variant versions of the fairy tale of Little Red Riding and deals with the issue of fear in modern stories. Another focus of interest are the stylistic devices which the author uses to increase and decrease the tension in the narrative. Since The Wolves in the Walls is a picture book, the thesis is interested in illustration and deals with the question how pictures and words act upon each other in this picture book. 4. BEHAVIORAL SHIFTS IN THE TRANSLATIONS OF SELECTED PICTURE BOOKSMetka Lovrin, 2015, master's thesis Abstract: The purpose of the MA thesis was to explore three English picture books (Sometimes I Like to Curl up in a Ball, The Slurpy Burpy Bear and The Gruffalo) and their Slovene translations (Včasih se rad kotalim kakor žoga, Rigajoči medved and Zverjasec) in regard to inappropriate child behavior which is usually deemed socially unacceptable by adults. Therefore, the aim of my qualitative research was to scrutinize such behavioral occurrences by using comparative and hermeneutic analysis, and to provide inductive reasons with thick description as to why these translation shifts occurred. The empirical part, in which I analyzed relevant sample passages in verbal (and visual) context, has led me to three major categories: “Discrepancy between Childish Authenticity and Social Values”, “Politeness” and “Demonization”. These revealed that corrective changes cannot be applied to Slovene picture book translation in general, but are subject to the individual translator’s child image.
