Intergenerational differences and knowledge transfer among slovenian engineers
Magda Lužar, Annmarie Gorenc Zoran, Mirko Markič, Boris Bukovec, 2023, original scientific article

Abstract: Background and Purpose: The study investigated the impact of intergenerational differences on knowledge transfer among engineers in large Slovenian production organizations. Method: Using the Delphi method, experts answered open-ended questions. The process concluded with a consensus reached in the third round. The resulting questionnaire was then administered to engineers of all ages working in large production organizations. Results: The experts’ responses indicated that intergenerational differences are most prominent in the workplace in terms of computer literacy and the use of information and communications technology. Effective employee engagement, including exemplary leadership, a system of mentoring and reverse mentoring, and a supportive organizational culture, was found to enhance the flow of knowledge transfer. Statistical analysis revealed that there are statistically significance intergenerational differences in knowledge transfer among engineers in large production organizations (p < 0.001). Conclusion: The study’s findings suggest that recognizing intergenerational differences and fostering the abilities of employees can contribute to organizational success. However, the study is limited to engineers in large production organizations in Slovenia. Future research should explore organizations in a wider geographical area and across different sectors.

Employers’ efforts to encourage older workers to retire later : a case study of large companies in Slovenia
Vesna Novak, Anja Vidmar, Janja Jerebic, Alenka Brezavšček, 2023, original scientific article

Abstract: Background and Purpose: Most developed societies are facing the challenge of an ageing population, which poses several issues, including low labour force participation and financial pressures on the sustainability of the pension system. Countries typically address this situation by raising the retirement age, which often results in dissatisfaction among workers as such decisions are perceived as imposed. Therefore, our work’s main purpose was to research the analysis of implementing measures for managing older workers in companies, which would indirectly influence workers’ decisions to voluntarily choose longer work participation. Design/Methodology/Approach: We designed our study on the assumption that companies that more frequently conduct various analyses of their employees also pay greater attention to measures for managing older workers. In doing so, we focused on the measures that the literature identifies as important for keeping older workers employed for longer. The data source was a study from 2020, which sampled large companies in Slovenia with more than 100 employees. We posed the questions to the person responsible for human resource management in the company. The initial question was whether conducting employee analyses is associated with the implementation of measures focused on education and training, skills transfer, and career development as well as managing the health of older workers. We formulated three main hypotheses, which we confirmed using linear correlation analysis. Results: We found that companies that conduct more frequent analyses of employees’ qualifications and competencies, on average, also more frequently implement measures related to the area of education and training of older workers and to the area of knowledge transfer and career development of older workers. We confirmed statistically significant correlations in general as well as at the level of particular measures. Furthermore, we found that companies that more frequently conduct analyses of the health structure of employees, on average, also more frequently implement measures in the field of managing the health of older workers. We concluded that companies that conduct employee analyses more frequently demonstrate a higher level of commitment to implementing measures for managing older workers, which subsequently impacts their decision to retire later. Conclusion: By conducting employee analyses, companies gain important information that leads to the timely and sufficiently frequent implementation of measures for managing older employees. With empirical data, we have supported our prediction that the frequency of implementing measures through which companies can influence older workers’ decisions for later retirement is associated with the frequent conduction of employee analyses. This article has contributed to our understanding of ageing and the treatment of older workers. It has also highlighted a softer approach to promoting prolonged work engagement for older employees as an alternative to unwanted, legally imposed later retirement.

Strength of culture and transfer of knowledge in organizations
Nataša Pivec, Vojko Potočan, 2021, original scientific article

Abstract: This paper analyses the effects of organizational culture on the transfer of knowledge in organizations. While prior literature has considered relations between individual classifications of organizational culture and the whole process of knowledge development, we focused our analysis on the dimension of cultural strength and its effects on the selected phase of knowledge transfer in organizations. Our study suggested that organizations need to analyse how weak and strong organizational culture affects knowledge in organizations. The study drew upon the behavioural, organizational, and knowledge management theories and analysed answers from 138 respondents in Slovenian organizations. Analysing knowledge data demonstrates that older respondents and employees in managerial positions are more prone to knowledge transfer. The analysis shows that the strength of organizational culture is positively and statistically significantly associated with knowledge transfer in organizations. The main practical implication of this study is our finding, which suggests that organizations need to further improve the transfer of knowledge through increasing the strength of organizational culture.

Marina Letonja, Mojca Duh, Zdenka Ženko, 2021, original scientific article

Abstract: Family businesses (FB) are important in the most of national economies. We explored whether successors innovativeness is positively associated with the transfer of the founder innovativenes sthrough knowledge transfer and creation processes in a form of the internal transfer of founders tacitand experiential knowledge and skills and with the external transfer of knowledge, when potential successors attend educational programs, external training, or gain working experience in other companies. Our research reveals that when the actual forms of internal knowledge transfer a rediscussed, the positive correlations exist between innovativeness of successors and their early inclusion into FB, apprenticeship, inclusion of successors into meetings with business partners and strategic planning before they get involved in FB. Our survey partially confirmed that regarding external transfer of knowledge, working experiences of successors in other companies and participation in academic courses are positively associated with their innovativeness.

The transfer of knowledge in intra-organizational networks : a case study analysis
Władzimierz Sroka, Joanna Cygler, Bożena Gajdzik, 2014, original scientific article

Abstract: Background: In today’s business environment, a company is able to maintain its competitive position if it constantly generates knowledge and disseminates this knowledge within the organization, as well as transforms it into new competences. The ability to transfer knowledge becomes one of the key factors in the improvement of a company’s competitive position. This hypothesis is applicable particularly in the case of cooperation within networks, as they are an excellent opportunity for mutual learning between partners. Objectives: The purpose of the paper is to analyse the process of knowledge transfer in intra-organizational networks. Method: Due to the specificity of the research object, the case study method has been chosen. In order to make an in-depth analysis of the case study, we selected a group of several criteria based on the theory which we believe to be fundamental to the effectiveness of knowledge management in networks, and compared them with the situation in the ArcelorMittal Group. Results: Our research show that ArcelorMittal Group has met almost all the criteria of effective knowledge management in its intra-organizational network. Some exceptions, albeit merely to an extent, are mostly the result of historical circumstances, , i.e. the process of growth through acquisitions, and the acquisition of companies at different stages of organizational development, as well as organizational culture. Conclusion: Based on theoretical assumptions, the study analysed in details the components of knowledge management applied by the corporation in question. Therefore this study might be utilised to formulate a refutable hypothesis and verify them on a larger group of companies from different sectors of the economy. The main limitations of the paper are mostly related to the inherent approach therein

A decision-making model for controlling logistics costs
Sebastjan Škerlič, Robert Muha, Klavdij Logožar, 2016, original scientific article

Abstract: A lack of understanding of logistics costs, particularly in terms of their integrity and interdependence, allows for the interests of individual departments within a company, which are not always in line with the common interests of the business process of the company, to take precedence over necessary logistics cost planning. In order to address this problem, we have developed a model that takes into account all the logistical costs within a company and represents an important decision-making tool that can be used by employees at different levels of the organization, covering different business functions. We have tested the model on a specific product in a company that operates in the automotive industry and determined that the model enables us to have greater control over logistics costs and improves the quality of information on logistics costs.

Dyslexia and Foreign Language Learning in Primary Schools
Dijana Šmon, 2014, undergraduate thesis

Abstract: The thesis Dyslexia and Learning a Foreign Language in Primary Schools deals with the general difficulties in foreign language learning which are caused by a very specific disorder called dyslexia. The problems that come with the disorder are in most cases transferred across languages and the aim of this thesis was to find out how dyslexia influences on the learning of the foreign language (English) in the primary school, which is becoming an issue and an open question nowadays between scientists and teachers who have a direct contact with the pupils. The main goals of the thesis are to connect the general characteristics of dyslexia and its influence on English as a foreign language and to identify the main language learning areas and skills in which dyslectics need special support and need to be taken under further investigation. The emphasis is also on providing some solutions, strategies and methods that would help teachers to support their learners with dyslexia. In the empirical part, I discuss the results. I also provide interpretations of one questionnaire, which was filled in by teachers of foreign language and one test that Slovene learners who have been learning English as their foreign language took. To obtain more additional data, five interviews with English language teachers were transcribed and analysed about their knowledge of dyslexia and the methods that they use to help dyslectics to benefit as much as possible from the foreign language lessons.
