Knowledge base of the region - role of the universities in regional innovation : the case of south Transdanubia

Abstract: The economic attraction and competitiveness of the regions depends on the spatially balanced network-based co-operation of different research bases and firms involved in innovation development. The utilisation of the regional knowledge base, innovation potential and co- operation between businesses and universities & research institutions continues to play an increasing role in regard to business success and the competitive economic performance of the regions. Innovation is considered as an interactive and system-like process depending on traditions with definite spatial forms and it is manifested in the form of “networks” among the companies and universities, and among the different transfer organisations, which can stimulate university-industry linkages. The paper presents the findings of the “ERAWATCH regional benchmarking surveys – in which the South Transdanubian region participated in – on innovation potential and investment into research” surveys concentrating on the role of innovation networks, within them highlighting the special role of regional universities in the collaborative research networks. The introduction is followed by a demonstration highlighting the role of universities in national and regional knowledge transfer emphasizing the fact that the spatial (regional) structure of innovation is very much determined by the transformation of potential universities and their widening innovative functions during the economic transition in Hungary. The next section provides an overview of findings of the ERAWATCH survey (2006) on the role of universities in regional network building and discusses those factors that are necessary for the establishment of a research university model. The last section assesses the efficiency and coherence of the Regional Innovation System with regard to the needs and capacities of the regional economies and the extent of matching or mismatching between the knowledge and economic specialization.

Constructing domain-specific semantic dictionaries to supplement domain-specific knowledge bases

Abstract: Semantic dictionaries as well as knowledge bases are im- portant source of information for natural language process- ing. Using corpus and algorithms for constructing semantic space, we can quickly construct semantic dictionary, which is exploit to supplement the knowledge base. Algorithm for constructing semantic space, COALS was chosen. Semantic distance between terms in semantic space reveals their sim- ilarity, which is used to add semantic relationships in the dictionary. Semantic dictionary also serves to assist in iden- tifying entities and in relation extraction, to supplement the knowledge base.

The advance engineering methods to plan the behaviour of fused panel

Abstract: The purpose of this paper is to analyse some mechanical properties and parameters of drapability using different methods from two different points of research area: knowledge bases and numerical modelling using the finite element method. The approach consists of analysing some mechanical properties and parameters of drapability using different methods from two different points of research areaČ knowledge bases and numerical modelling using the finite element method. The knowledge bases, named FP_B-1 and FPO_B-2, were used to analyse the bending rigidity of fused panels. The numerical model of fused panel NMFP is used to analyse parameters of drapability. Findings - Based on the analyses of bending rigidity and draping of fused panels the conclusions indicate the significance of interaction between mechanical properties and parameters of drapability of thefused panel to garment appearance. Furthermore, the methods used present a computer approach to the study of the fused panel properties important for thecomputer-based engineering and the presentation of real behaviour of all aspects of clothes. This numerical model of a fused panel enables a 3D observation of this aspect of clothes which is a behaviour, very important contribution to the computer planning of the behaviour of produced clothes. Originality is in a better understanding of how to construct fused panels in clothing.

Intelligent FEA-based design improvement

Abstract: Structural analysis using the finite element method is an integrate part of the design process for many components. Finite element analysis is the most extensively used numerical analysis in mechanical engineering practice and is incorporated into many computer-aided design systems. The existing commercial software is very helpful when supporting realisation of the analysis process but still fails to provide adequate support during the post-processing phase. The results of analysis should be studied and decisions made regarding the designćs suitability with respect to its engineering specifications. In general, design changes are indispensable and designers need help to design them properly. The prototype of an intelligent rule-based consultative system is being developed by the authors to provide such advice when considering a description of the design structurećs critical area. This system is encoded in Prolog. It can deal with the results of prior strain-stress or thermal analysis. It presents a short list of proposed design changes that should be taken into account when improving the design.
