Proceedings of the 1st international scientific conference "Teaching methods for economics and business sciences"
2017, proceedings of peer-reviewed scientific conference contributions (international and foreign conferences)

Abstract: Teaching is a challenging but also a rewarding profession. It is underpinned by one key question: how do we build a good teaching and learning environment so that our students can acquire professional competences which will enable them to be successful in today’s global business environment. These proceedings include the papers presented at the 1st International Scientific Conference »Teaching Methods for Economics and Business Sciences« held on 8 May 2017 at the University of Maribor, Faculty of Economics and Business. The papers address students’ learning outcomes, the development and measurement of students’ professional and transversal competences and skills, creative teaching and learning techniques such as brainstorming and creative problem solving, active learning and collaborative learning, students’ self-assessment of their learning, experiential learning and lifelong learning, practical teaching methods such as business simulations, action-based learning and knowledge integration, innovations and sustainability of different teaching methods, non-formal learning and teaching activities for vocational competences development, ethical aspects of creating a good student environment, capacity building, students’ learning styles, teaching styles, students’ creativeness, and, last but not least, students’ academic success and their personal well being. These papers provide valuable insights into academic teaching practice and contribute to the answer to the above question.

Diagonal cumulation of origin as the EU's institutional incentive mechanism for promoting international trade and business
Milan Jurše, Klavdij Logožar, Romana Korez-Vide, 2010, original scientific article

Abstract: In this paper we explore the effects of a diagonal cumulation of origin as the EU's Common Commercial Policy (CCP) incentive mechanism that affects the intraregional trade and transaction cost structure of firms engaged in cross-border business operation. The research explores how firms should frame their cross-border physical flows of goods and the configuration of their value-adding processes for taking advantage of diagonal cumulation of origin. The empirical analysis is based on an in-depth case study of effects of the 'SAP+ diagonal cumulation of origin' on changes in the transaction cost structure of a selected Slovenian firm operating within the household-appliance sector in one of the Western Balkan Countries. Based on eligibility of local subsidiary for using origin of goods in its import/exporttransactions the cost calculations were made for its products and then three different business scenarios were developed for showing the effects of the mechanism on transaction cost changes of a firm. The paper concludes that, at the conceptual level, the mechanism of diagonal cumulation of origin may serve as an effective institutional cross-border trade-promoting tool.

Danube Region Entrepreneurship Observatory
Polona Tominc, Miroslav Rebernik, Barbara Bradač Hojnik, Karin Širec, scientific monograph

Abstract: There is no doubt about the importance of multi-country studies of entrepreneurial activity in enabling the comparison and replication of research and generating meaningful contributions to scholarship, practice and policy. This international comparison perspective is especially important when processes in each single economy are analysed against the broader global, European or regional environment. Since entrepreneurship is a complex social phenomenon, several dependencies can be understood only with comprehensive research that includes continuous positioning of national entrepreneurship in the European and global perspectives. Within Global Entrepreneurship Monitor (GEM) it is possible to compare data for more than 100 countries not only in the field of early-stage entrepreneurial activity but also in areas such as general attitudes of the adult population towards entrepreneurship, entrepreneurial intentions, etc. In this scientific monograph publication, we analyse the entrepreneurial profiles of Danube region countries, entrepreneurial intentions in the region and investigate the competition and aspirations of early-stage entrepreneurs in these countries.

INTERCULTURAL DIFFERENCES AND INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS
Nuša Basle, 2013, undergraduate thesis

Abstract: In this diploma seminar I investigate world cultures and present their features, similarities and differences. Based thereon, I attempt to find out the possible ways to conduct business in different cultures. My aim was also to prove if all the literature information can be used in real life experience. I interviewed people who work in international firms that operate aboard, specifically in Austria, Brazil and Russia for my empirical part. On the basis of their information I could conclude that theory applies to practice and can serve as a useful guideline for international companies who want to conduct international business.
Keywords: Culture, cultural differences, international business, communication, negotiation, resolving conflicts.
