Abstract: The idea for the diploma thesis arouse from the fact that technology and the Internet are still not widely used in the English classroom. When thinking about how to integrate technology in the classroom I was inspired by different web sites which offer a vast variety of authentic as well as ELT-specific materials that can be used in the English classroom. I decided to focus on developing intercultural competence with information and communication technology by extending the intercultural topics covered in the coursebooks for students at secondary level.
In the theoretical part of my thesis I present the notion of intercultural competence as defined by different authors. A special emphasis is given to developing of intercultural competence in the English classroom, including planning lessons to develop intercultural competence. In the third chapter the information and communication technology (ICT) and the English classroom is covered. Some possibilities of using ICT in the English classroom in terms of Web 2.0 are presented, which is the basis for the empirical part.
In the empirical part of my thesis the activities to extend the intercultural topics covered in coursebooks are planned and presented. Since all activities are planned to be done online, they are available also on the Internet.

Factors that impact internet use and are sensitive to income : cross-country empirical evidenceDijana Močnik

Abstract: This paper examines information and communication technology (ICT) and socioeconomic indicators associated with Internet use based on income level across countries. Although some literature deals with cross-country indicatorsof Internet use, no known study quantitatively examines which indicators are superior or how they differ across countries with different income level. We extract factors with the most important indicators and evaluate their impact on Internet use for four income groups: low, lower middle, upper middle, and high. The results show that Internet use can be stimulated by educated people, available computers, telecommunications connections and increasing income per capita. However, prices of telecommunications services, international trade, investment, population density, unemployment rate or GDP growth rate do not affect Internet use.

Abstract: Unanticipated events on building sites are inevitable. The frequency of unanticipated events is usually high due to the inherent complexity and dynamics of construction projects. A proper mobile interactive personal network can make use of the rich knowledge and experience of site staff, to handle and effectively resolve on-site problems caused by unanticipated events. Immediate on-site problem solving significantly impacts subsequent project characteristics and leads to a more productive organizational processes as a whole. This paper focuses on the importance of interactive personal communication as a basis for immediate on-site problem solving. For communications support, a human-oriented pragmatic solution in the form of a mobile, interactive, context-sensitive personal network is presented.

Usage of information and communication technology in micro enterprises in the last decadeAnja Žnidaršič

Abstract: The paper presents the comparison of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) usage in Slovenian micro enterprises, using data derived from two studies carried out in years 1999 and 2009. Data for the studies were collected via structured interviews with owners or top managers of micro enterprises. We compared hardware and software equipment, business properties, characteristics of the interviewees and their impact on the successful use of ICT. The results show considerable changes in the ICT equipment, but that does not reflect in a better use of software compared to a decade ago. Key factors of successful use of ICT remain the same. The investment in ICT depends on owners' decisions and the most important factors are the owners' formal education and their skills and knowledge in ICT field. It was indicated that in recent years the investment of education in ICT field for both groups, owners and employees, was considerable lowered.

Development of ICT competences in the environmental studies subject in SloveniaVlasta Hus

Abstract: Digital literacy is one of eight key competences that were defined by the European Parliament and Council as those that member states should develop as a part of their strategies for lifelong learning (Official Journal of the European Union, 2006, p.11). It would contribute to a more successful life in a knowledge society. The purpose of this paper is to Npresent the results of empirical research on the use of ICT in the lessons of the environmental studies subject in the first triennium of primary schools in the Republic of Slovenia. Data were collected through a questionnaire and according to the protocol. We found that among all of the ICT tools, teachers mostly use the computer. The majority of the teachers use the computer once a week, most often in mathematics and environmental studies subject. In the observed lessons of the environmental studies subject, less than half of teachers use the computer in the lessons. This was followed by the use of computer and the LCD projector, and the interactive whiteboard. Among the obstacles that teachers indicate when they try to include ICT in the learning process are insufficient, out of date equipment, lack of time and lack of their own competence.

Abstract: Effective integration of information and communication technology (ICT) into the teaching process is becoming an indispensable part of an effective educational process. In this study, the research was conducted at reprezentative sample of teachers teaching Design and technology in primary school in Slovenia on the use of the computer and the applicability of individual forms of e-learning in class and reported on the actual use of the computer in their classroom. The basic finding of the study is that teachers do use computers in class and that they are inclined towards using different forms of e-learning. Their position regarding the use of the computer in classis positive, with the exception of the attitude towards the knowledge and experiences acquired during their undergraduate study. Such information indicates that in the future, special attention must be given to the training of teachers for the use of the computer already during undergraduate study.

Educating teachers and multipliers for future work with the elderly and the role of motivational workshops for the elderly's future participation in ICT training coursesHelena Blažun

Abstract: To find potential connection between positive experiences from ICT training courses gained by teachers and multipliers and their ability to affect elderlypeopleʼs willingness to learn ICT skills and motivate them for future participation in ICT training courses through motivational workshops. The evaluation of the ICT training courses for teachers and multipliers and the motivational workshops for the elderly. The data obtained was quantitative andanalyzed using SPSS software. The authors found a significant correlation between the number of possibilities for discussion provided during the ICT training courses for teachers and multipliers and the opinion that, from an overall perspective, the course helped the participants to be more sensitized to intergenerational issues and so understand the elderly people better. Similarly, the authors found significant correlation between the number of discussion possibilities during the motivational workshops for elderly and thelevel of interest in participation in future ICT training courses. Individuals who work in a teaching/learning process with elderly people need to be properly trained to be able to transfer knowledge and motivation to the elderly. Motivational workshops for the elderly should focus on individualizedlearning methods which positively affect elderlyʼs future motivation to learn ICT skills.
