1. Application of colour theory in the process of creating 3D scenes for video games : diplomsko deloLana Stepišnik, 2023, undergraduate thesis Abstract: This thesis explores the utilization of color theory in video games to evoke specific emotions in players. It also examines the intersection of genre and narrative theory with color design. The practical aspect of the thesis involves the creation and implementation of a targeted color scheme. By drawing inspiration from established games and employing principles of color theory, a cohesive palette was developed and implemented into a game scene. A survey was conducted to assess the effectiveness of the color scheme in eliciting intended emotions. The findings highlight the importance of considering color theory in creating immersive and emotionally engaging game experiences. 2. Character representation in the romance genre: the example of the novel Outlander : master's thesisNataša Pernat, 2023, master's thesis Abstract: Written by the American author Diana Gabaldon, the novel Outlander is one of the most popular books in the historical romance genre, but it also includes elements of the fantasy genre.
The Master thesis explores the identification chains of the two protagonists – Jamie Fraser, Claire (Randall) Fraser, and the antagonist, Black Jack Randall. The analysis is based on the concept of reference and participant identification as proposed by Halliday and Hasan (1976) and Martin and Rose (2004). The purpose of the thesis is to analyse the diversity of references in identification chains of the three selected characters. References are divided into five specified categories. Additionally, references are also analysed by categories in each reference chain according to their evaluation (positive, negative, and neutral).
Four hypotheses have been set to guide the analysis. H1: The most diverse identity chain belongs to the male protagonist (Jamie Fraser). H1 has been confirmed. H2: The majority of the references in the identity chain of the antagonist (Black Jack Randall) have a negative evaluation. H2 has been rejected. The antagonist (Black Jack Randall) has the least diverse identity chain, H3 has been confirmed. H4: The identity chain of the female protagonist (Claire Randall Fraser) is the longest. H4 has also been confirmed.
The findings from the analysis are interpreted in connection to the characteristics of the romance genre. Keywords: character representation, romance genre, cohesion, identity chain, Outlander, historical romance Published in DKUM: 31.05.2023; Views: 537; Downloads: 41 Full text (2,79 MB) |
3. Discourse Characteristics of Self-Help Books: The Example of The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People by Stephen R. CoveyTamara Nerat, 2017, master's thesis Abstract: The main purpose of the thesis was to explore the discourse characteristics in self-help books on the example of a popular classic of this genre. The aim was a discourse analysis of the self-help manual The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People (1989) by Stephen R. Covey. The book falls under the self-help category and includes typical features which are common for the genre. The thesis presents the distinguishing characteristics and shows the conventions which make it a typical representative of its genre. The main part consists of a discourse analysis of a chapter from the book, discussing the prevailing cohesive relations and its situational and generic coherence. The analysis examines the following cohesive devices: reference chains, typical examples of ellipsis and substitution, conjunction (the use of linking words and lexical ties), typical examples of lexical cohesion (examples of reiteration). The practical value of discourse analysis is in the fact that it displays a text's cohesion and coherence, both of which impact the text's quality and show if a text makes sense as a unified whole. The knowledge of cohesive devices is useful for evaluating texts (helping readers, critics, teachers) and text production (helping writers, journalists, students). The analysis has demonstrated connectedness and unity achieved through the use of cohesive devices and the prevalence of certain cohesive devices which can be linked to the specifics of the genre. The analysis also shows a situational and generic coherence, that is in line with the expectations towards the genre and context. An insight into how the internal organization of the text and content is connected to the register and genre of the text is supplied by the conclusion based on the analysis. 4. 5. CLIPPINGS IN ENGLISH: A COMPARISON OF CLIPPINGS AND THEIR UNCLIPPED VARIANTSAnja Hamer, 2013, undergraduate thesis Abstract: According to Adams (1992) clipping is as a process by which a word of two or more syllables (usually a noun) is shortened without a change in its function taking place (Adams, 1992, 135). Clipped words are mostly formed in informal language but can be easily transferred into a formal language and thus become part of the official language.
The main purpose of graduation thesis is to analyze the difference of occurrences of fifty clipped words and their unclipped variants in the spoken, newspaper and academic genres as well as in all three genres overall in the time period 2010-2012. A corpus analysis was made for this purpose. The data was obtained from the Corpus of Contemporary American English.
The results showed that the majority of clipped words prevail over their unclipped variants in the spoken and newspaper genres. The majority of clipped words also dominate over their unclipped variants in all the three genres overall. Clipped words also appear in the academic genre but do not prevail over their unclipped variants.
The results are interpreted on the basic of the fact that clipped words easily transfer into Standard English, speakers prefer to use clipped forms rather than unclipped variants in order to gain simplicity and to show familiarity with the social groups they belong to while authors of newspaper articles tend to use eye-catching words in headlines. 6. Dynamicity and stativenes of English phrasal verbs in different genresKlementina Kralj, 2012, undergraduate thesis Abstract: Phrasal verbs are one of the parts of English language that are not researched in details yet like basic parts of grammar. Tenses, aspect, modal verbs etc. are parts of English language that are researched in details and mostly deal with one-word verbs. In this diploma work we deal with the multi-word verbs, which are formed with verb and particle, called Phrasal verbs.
Present diploma work deals with frequency of phrasal verbs in different genres and focuses on their characteristics and formation. Identifying and classifying the phrasal verbs in a literature work or newspaper article can be a very long and complicated procedure because one phrasal verb can have two or more meanings. We also looked for Slovene translations of phrasal verbs and analyzed their structure. The Slovene system of phrasal verbs differs from English system and most of the phrasal verb translations are not phrasal verbs in Slovene. Then our aim will be to determine stative and dynamic features of the phrasal verbs.
