Black-out diesel engine operation modelling for the CHPP start-up

Abstract: Modelling power plants using real process data is crucial in determining the cost-effectiveness and flexibility of systems. The quality of the elaborated model is determined with the validation of the model, which can also give results for the operating regimes of the plant, which are not often used in practice. In this way, also the operation and responsiveness of power plants outside the range of planned operation are determined. The model simulates the operation of a diesel engine (DE) required to start a combined heat & power plant (CHPP) from a black-out or loss of the electrical power network supply. The model is made on the basis of data provided by the manufacturer and the measured DE data. The results of the model enable detailed insight into the characteristics of the DE behaviour at different operating regimes. The economic and ecological rationale ranges of operation of the DE can be determined from the characteristics of operation. The results of the model show that the DE operates with a 41.72% average efficiency, consumes from 0.114 kg/s of diesel fuel for its operation and up to 3.68 kg/s of air, the air ratio ranges from 2.2 to 2.5. DE develops shaft power up to 2170 kW.

The use of false friends among Slovene students of English : master's thesis

Abstract: The theoretical framework in the master’s thesis entitled “The Use of False Friends among Slovene Students of English” covers concepts that are fundamental to false friends and translation studies in general. The theoretical part discusses the authors’ perspectives on definitions and classifications which include various examples of equivalence, cognates and false friends. It then highlights some examples and ideas regarding teaching and learning false friends in the classroom. It is argued that focus on false friends is a useful tool for teachers who incorporate the concept of false friends in their classes. The empirical part of this thesis presents the results of the research which examines the use and knowledge of Slovene-English false friends among Slovene students of English. The research was conducted through a questionnaire which had 26 questions and was distributed online with the help of the tool 1ka. The study included 244 Slovene learners of English. 118 participants were primary school learners from 6th to 9th grade and 126 participants were secondary school learners from years 1 to 4. The results show that Slovene students of English are aware of a significant number of false friends included in the survey, although there are still plenty of Slovene-English false friend pairs that remain unfamiliar. The questionnaire results indicate that more than half of the participants have not heard the expression “false friends” as a linguistic concept at the time of the testing. In general, secondary school learners were more successful in the use of Slovene-English false friends pairings than primary school learners. At the same time, the results do not show that learners with higher grades in English are more familiar with false friends than those with lower grades.

Translation Shifts in User's Guides: The Case of iPhone User Guide for iOS 5.1 Software

Abstract: The graduation thesis Translation Shifts in User's Guides: The Case of iPhone User Guide for iOS 5.1 Software presents translation shifts and their appearance in the Slovene translation of the user's guide. Translation shifts are common in all kinds of text. In this thesis I describe some of the most common translation shifts, present in the Slovene translation of the iPhone User Guide for iOS 5.1 Software. Technical texts are a challenge for every translator. He has to poses the knowledge of the technical field he is translating in. Whenever transferring the message form one language to another, there are obstacles, which the translator has to overcome. Each language has its grammatical, lexical and semantic characteristics, which are unique. Achieving equivalence and equivalent effect always and in every situation is nearly impossible. Therefore translation shift are unavoidable. C. J. Catford (1965), Kitty van Leuven-Zwart (1989) Vinay and Darbelnet (1995), Nida (1964) and Popovič (1970) dedicated their time to translation shifts. Based on the work and classification of Vinay and Darbelnet (1995) and Nida (1964) I have analysed the Slovene translation of the iPhone User Guide for iOS 5.1 Software. The analysis of the iPhone User Guide for iOS 5.1 Software shows that the predominant translation shift is transposition (change of word class). It occurs most frequently in connection with nominalization in the Slovene translation.

Abstract: Self-help books are becoming very popular nowadays and have to be translated in other languages in order to be accessible to a wider audience from other countries. All self-help books share the same goal: to help the readers find solutions to their problems. They are written with a specific purpose and have special characteristics, which have to be considered when translating them. This graduation thesis focuses on the translation of self-help books in general and gives an analysis of some aspects of the translation of a specific self-help book - The Secret. This is a self-help book about happiness and getting and achieving everything the readers want in their life, written by Rhonda Byrne in 2006. The thesis looks into some specific problems the translator faced while translating the book from English into the Slovene language and examines the inconsistencies with the original that occurred in the Slovene translation. The first problem addressed is the decision about the use of formal or informal addressing of readers. The translator decided to use a T/V distinction and addresses the readers with a polite second plural V-form of a verb (“vi”) – “vikanje”. The second problem discussed is the problem of non-equivalence of word-meanings. The most common and important verb that is repeated throughout the whole book is verb “want”. Nevertheless, the verb is not translated consistently and is sometimes replaced with other verbs and words. The third problem is the problem of repetition of the lexical items or phrases, which have a cohesive and a rhetoric function. However, the translator did not preserve all the repetitions. The fourth problem the thesis focuses on is the problem of capitalization of words. Some concepts are capitalized in the original, because they are allegorical personification or because of their importance, yet the capitalization is not preserved in all cases in the translation. The main focus of the graduation thesis is to determine how the translator solved the problem of pragmatic adjustment of the book to the Slovene audience and their culture.
