Effect of usage of industrial robots on quality, labor productivity, exports and environment
Jasna Prester, Iztok Palčič, 2024, original scientific article

Abstract: Industrial robots are slowly finding their way into manufacturing companies. This paper examines the impact of robots on productivity, exports, quality, sustainability and labor in European manufacturing companies. There is little research on the use of industrial robots and their impact in developed countries. Most research relates to Chinese companies, and often, the data are outdated. The data in this paper come from the European Manufacturing Survey project, which was conducted in 2022 and includes 476 manufacturing companies. The results of the impact of industrial robots on quality, labor productivity, exports and green technologies are determined using a T-test between companies that use industrial robots and those that do not. However, the impact of higher investment in environmental technologies by industrial robot users was examined by a two-stage OLS regression analysis with control variables representing the contextual characteristics of the companies. The results show positive effects on all of the variables. The results show that the greater use of robots occurs in industries with low-to-medium technology intensity, that robots contribute to labor productivity and exports and that companies that use robots also tend to use environmentally friendly technologies.

The perception of sustainability competences in logistics and supply chains
Mateja Čuček, Sonja Mlaker Kač, Matevž Obrecht, Lazar Pavić, 2024, original scientific article

Abstract: The European Union (EU) has adopted a huge number of guidelines and policies to promote sustainability in different sectors. The study focuses on the twin green and digital transformation, which is particularly highlighted in the context of the European Green Deal, a comprehensive strategy to tackle climate change and environmental degradation while embracing digital innovation for economic growth and societal progress. These guidelines and policies show the EU's commitment to promoting sustainability in different sectors and to achieving the objectives of climate change, environmental protection and sustainable development. One of the areas that plays an important role for the individuals as well as for the economy is logistics and supply chain management. The main research question of this study is to investigate the relationship between the basic sociodemographic characteristics and their perception of the importance of sustainability competences in logistics and supply chains in the future. The study was carried using survey questionnaire on employees in the field of logistics and supply chains in Slovenia. The results show the main statistically significant differences in these perceptions are primary based on differences in employees demographic characteristics, such as gender, age and level of education of the employees.

Measurement and improvement of airport’s environmental behavior: an empirical study from North African Countries (NAC) : doctoral dissertation
Ahmed Eid, 2024, doctoral dissertation

Abstract: Environmental challenges have grown in worldwide relevance. Considering that most environmental issues are due to human behavior, it is crucial to be aware of environmental sustainability issues in airports where many environmental problems arise. It is worth noting that, in the global society of the 21st century, air transportation serves an important purpose as one of the logistics operations (a crucial component of the worldwide economic supply chain). Otherwise, the aviation sector is one of the factors that contribute to the degradation of the environment. Thus, environmental sustainability in airports is essential, as it is associated with conserving the airport environment from degradation. Since human actions create most environmental problems, fostering eco-friendly habits is seen as a viable strategy for a sustainable future. Hence, enforcing environmentally friendly behavior is vital to achieving environmental sustainability, considering the governing authorities' continuous and rising demand for transportation system sustainability. Thus, under the lances of reasoned action theory, the research aim is to improve the airport's environmental sustainability by developing a new model to develop specific stakeholders' environmental behavior, as environmental sustainability has become a pledge of every supply chain member. Investigating airport individuals' environmental behavior by measuring the impact of airport environmental knowledge and the airport's environmental sustainability performance on their environmental behavior through attitude and testing the moderating role of environmental advertising on the indirect effect of environmental sustainability performance and environmental sustainability knowledge. Notably, the research is based on the reasoned action theory since it concerns the motivation for behavior. The research contributes to extending the reasoned action theory since it strives to adopt the theory in North African airports. Moreover, this research would contribute to expanding the reasoned action theory by providing a theoretical model for understanding its abstract concepts by examining the impact of environmental sustainability knowledge, performance, attitude, and advertising on developing environmental behavior.

Environmental responsibility and communication in selected companies in the Podravska statistical region
Zala Virant, Janez Osojnik, Andreja Kozmus, 2024, original scientific article

Abstract: The paper presents best practices pursued by eight companies from the Podravska statistical region selected because they promote green transition in this society. In the theoretical section, the article presents environmental responsibility as part of corporate social responsibility and deals with the type of communication needed to address and motivate people to implement the EU Green Deal goals. The empirical section analyses eight semi-structured interviews with representatives from selected companies in the Podravska statistical region. The results highlight long-term efforts to raise public awareness about the environmental crisis (without major visible effects), financial aid as the main motivation factor to implement green practices, shortage of specific training courses in communication, and the need for locally focused training.

Teachers’ perception of environmental crisis in selected Slovenian regions
Andreja Kozmus, Mateja Pšunder, 2024, independent scientific component part or a chapter in a monograph

Abstract: Attention to the environmental agenda in Slovenia is growing in line with perceived environmental changes and is also being translated into school practice. Teachers are particularly important in educating about and raising awareness of the environmental crisis among young people. Within the framework of the ZELEN.KOM project, among other activities and with multiple respondents, we have identified 204 sets of perceptions of the environmental crisis among teachers, including their concerns about it, and the extent to which they are willing to be educated about it. We were interested in the differences between teachers according to individual variables (gender, age, place of residence and level of education). We found that teachers recognise and are very concerned about environmental issues in Slovenia; overall, there are no significant differences in their responses to the individual variables. In future it would be worthwhile to explore the transition from teachers’ declared views on the environmental crisis to their active, sustainable action.

Mohamed El Merroun, Istvan Janos Bartók, Osama Alkhlaifat, 2024, original scientific article

Abstract: In the present-day competitive business landscape, integrating Industry 4.0 has transitioned from a choice to a necessity for companies striving to maintain their edge. Given the automation functions of IoT, the data management and transformation capabilities of AI, and the traceability benefits provided by Blockchain, this imperative is now more evident than ever. While widespread interest in Industry 4.0 is prevalent, the uncertainties surrounding the implementation process pose notable challenges. For this reason, in this paper, we present a single case study of a firm that operates in the information technology market to showcase the implementation process and how they overcome the challenges of digital transformation. Furthermore, the effect of this implementation on environmental sustainability experienced by the company and three of its customers was discussed.

Economic growth and environmental sustainability determinants : a panel ARDL evidence for EU Countries
Ardita Bytyqi, Hyrije Abazi-Alili, Shenaj Hadzimustafa, 2024, original scientific article

Abstract: Economic growth and environmental sustainability nowadays are considered to be of particular importance, so understanding the main contributing factors is very important as well. This paper aims to examine the common determinants of economic growth and environmental sustainability, inspect the relationship between these key elements, and check their significance in economic growth and environmental sustainability. With data from EU member states for a period of ten years (2011-2020) the panel autoregressive distributed lag technique (ARDL) is used for the aim of this paper. Common determinants such as recycling and environmental taxes were found to be the major contributors to economic growth in the long run. Recycling is found to be a major contributor to environmental sustainability as well, however, environmental taxes are detected to have a negative impact on environmental sustainability in the long run, but none of these determinants have any impact in the short run.

Dorota Klimecka-Tatar, Manuela Ingaldi, Matevž Obrecht, 2021, original scientific article

Abstract: Supply chain management is one of the most important elements of sustainable development. And due to the fact that the world market is driven by supply and demand, and the determinant of access to products is regional and international logistics, this paper focuses on the possibilities of implementing a green transport strategy in the context of sustainable development in logistic enterprises. This paper presents the results of the SWOT anal-ysis pointing out the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, threats of green vehicles market for the transport enterprises. It was noticed that the situation on the green vehicles market for the transport enterprises is charac-terized by the advantage of strengths and these strengths should be used to maximize the use of green vehicles. It emphasized that subsidies for green vehicles would allow to invest in a modern fleet, new solutions (e.g. own charging stations) can have an impact on the greater energy efficiency (self-sufficiency), increase of social aware-ness would force enterprises to take appropriate actions in the field of environmental protection and develop-ment of publictransport based on green vehicles.

Assessment of environmental sustainability integration into higher education for future experts and leaders
Matevž Obrecht, Zane Feodorova, Maja Rosi, 2022, original scientific article

Abstract: The environmental and climate crisis is gaining priority among critical human concerns; therefore, environmental knowledge and sustainable solutions play a significant role and gaining global popularity as an academic discipline. Additionally, United Nations Sustainable Development Goal no. 4 acknowledges education's role in promoting sustainable development, sustainable lifestyles, human rights, social responsibility, circular economy, and greening our economy and society. In this paper new conceptual framework that focuses on systematically analyzing environmental sustainability integration in study programs and subjects is developed. The main aim is to reflect the conceptual basis of education related to environmental sustainability topics such as sustainable development, social responsibility, circular economy, ecology, environmental protection, and greening to boost future environmental management practices in industry and services. Defining the level of integration of environmental and sustainability-related topics is divided by research field classification and study cycles (BSc, MSc, PhD). The specific added value of the developed conceptual framework is reflected by defining cross-sections and inter-and trans-disciplinary of sustainability topics integrated within specific programs and subjects. The conceptual framework was tested by assessing 1051 programs in progress in Slovenia. It was revealed that the highest share of study programs has an intermediate level of environmental sustainability with 2–3 subjects (392 study programs). These are represented mainly by integrating environmental protection, ecology, and “greening” but less with circular economy and social responsibility. Significant differences among specific study programs and study fields reflect that young intellectuals will not be equally educated and qualified for future managerial challenges. Master students gain the best insight into core sustainability and environmental topics needed for future environmental managers.
