Raising awareness of urban environment development in primary schools

Abstract: In the past few years, excessive efforts have been made to increase the city’s attractiveness and its international positioning. Also studies on the so-called city destination branding are on the rise. Theorists, as Ramirez (2001), Marzano and Scott (2009), among many others, are discussing different aspects of this complex process. Many approaches and strategies are dealing with the positioning of urban environments and city destinations, trying to provide at least some partial answers about achieving this objective. With proper marketing and branding, cities can do a lot to attract tourists and visitors. For successful city marketing and branding and for the successful long-term positioning of the destination in general, it is necessary to involve the key stakeholders and collaborate with as many as possible despite the fact that the branding of a city destination (or any destination for that matter) is a complex process. It is significant that all the stakeholders, who are always carriers of different interests, are invited to collaborate in the planning of the tourism development and tourism development strategies, from the government, the private sector, schools etc. It is also important to involve the citizens, who can provide a valuable opinion about the environment they live in – what they like about their environment, what suggestion would they give to tourists about gastronomy, attractions, shops, events, etc. It is significant that citizens are proud of their urban environment, that they know their own environment, and that they have the motivation for the involvement in the process of improvement of their home environment (through projects, discussions, etc.). It is impossible to create attractive urban environments or cities if residents do not have a positive opinion about the place they live in. That is why it is essential for the education institutions at all levels, but especially for the institutions at the primary levels to educate children, toddlers, pupils, students, about the importance of urban environment development and create a positive learning environment, where children are able to develop as residents with a great understanding of the potential of the environment they live in. The paper explores the importance of raising awareness of the urban environment in primary schools from the theoretical, analytical and practical point of views. In the paper, we will examine whether primary schools in the city of Maribor, Slovenia educate children about their urban environment, if they are creating positive learning environments, where children can develop into proud citizens aware of the significance of the urban environment and its consequences for the quality of their lives. Further on, the curricula in chosen primary schools in Maribor is going to be analyzed. With the survey, we will try to identify the degree of children’s awareness of their surrounding urban environment, the information they receive about their environment, and their attitude towards it. And finally, what is most important, we will try to show the extreme significance of the learning environment and the curricula for raising the awareness of the environment and growing into responsible adults who will also act responsibly towards their urban environments.

The appeal and applicability of ICT study materials

Abstract: Effective contemporary teaching is closely connected to the inclusion of ICT, which comprises technological tools and the preparation and distribution of multimedia learning content. Therefore, one of the objectives of pre-service teacher education is to produce a technologically competent teacher. For this reason, the study programme includes a range of learning content where pre-service teachers engage in practical work in order to learn about the uses of ICT, tools and procedures for the production and distribution of multimedia learning content. Current generations of pre-service teachers are considered as belonging to Generation Z, or digital natives, and we can consequently expect experience, greater interest in studying the material and motivation to use ICT in their work. After the conclusion of the ICT in Education course, a study was prepared focusing on the learning materials that pre-service teachers find interesting, how they assess the applicability and transferability of this material and on the assessment of their own qualification for preparing multimedia learning materials. The results have shown that contemporary generations are familiar with working with ICT; however, they lack the experience and knowledge for using programs and tools. They want more knowledge and practical work in preparing multimedia learning material and in its distribution. The possibility of distributing multimedia learning content has resulted in a notable interest in working with Moodle, which is evident from the comparison of results from this year%s generation and those from two years ago. Students believe that the syllabus provided is interesting and useful. The acquired knowledge will be useful in the production of future learning materials and for work in other courses. The findings of the study will be used in the updating and preparation of future syllabi.

Teaching early-level foreign languages to pupils with impaired pronunciation abilities

Abstract: Today, teaching and learning early-level foreign languages has become a common issue often discussed by specialists. This article deals with the problems of foreign language pronunciation for primary level pupils with impaired communication abilities. The article includes findings from special education and psychology reports along with a definition of the term impaired communication ability and the phonetic-phonological impact it has on learning a foreign language. The conclusion presents some chosen methods for teaching drama and theatre projects that deal with proper pronunciation training and the results of related research investigations.

Structural differences in the self-determination of upper secondary students with and without disabilities in vocational education

Abstract: The aim of the study was to analyze the differences in degree of self-determination between students with and without disabilities and to relate these differences to grade point average and gender in both groups. Students in both groups were equalized in pairs by age, gender and school program (n = 122; 61 pairs). Results indicate that students with disabilities have a lower level of self-determination than their peers without disabilities. With regards to gender, girls with disabilities have the lowest level of self-determination. An analysis of differences in self-determination by grade point average (GPA) showed that students with and without disabilities who had high GPAs have higher levels of self-determination than students with low GPAs. Results of this study reveal important fields of intervention, especially for students with disabilities.

Abstract: Teaching is a challenging but also a rewarding profession. It is underpinned by one key question: how do we build a good teaching and learning environment so that our students can acquire professional competences which will enable them to be successful in today’s global business environment. These proceedings include the papers presented at the 1st International Scientific Conference »Teaching Methods for Economics and Business Sciences« held on 8 May 2017 at the University of Maribor, Faculty of Economics and Business. The papers address students’ learning outcomes, the development and measurement of students’ professional and transversal competences and skills, creative teaching and learning techniques such as brainstorming and creative problem solving, active learning and collaborative learning, students’ self-assessment of their learning, experiential learning and lifelong learning, practical teaching methods such as business simulations, action-based learning and knowledge integration, innovations and sustainability of different teaching methods, non-formal learning and teaching activities for vocational competences development, ethical aspects of creating a good student environment, capacity building, students’ learning styles, teaching styles, students’ creativeness, and, last but not least, students’ academic success and their personal well being. These papers provide valuable insights into academic teaching practice and contribute to the answer to the above question.

Music education for every child - ideal or reality?

Abstract: Contemporary pedagogical, psychological and sociological research highlights the need to make music education available to every child. Starting from the fundamental point of view according to which music affects the development of the child's whole personality, this idea has been around since the 17th century. Various educators in the late nineteenth and early twentieth century emphasized the importance of music education for every child. Through a historical and theoretical overview of this idea, this paper examine the potential for its realization in contemporary educational practice. The Venezuelan music education program El Sistema, which promotes the humanistic idea of changing society through classical music education, stands out as a unique example of good practice. As a form of music education which particularly promotes the idea of music being available to every child, the conception of Functional Music Pedagogy by the Croatian music pedagogue Elly Bašić (1908-1998) is also discussed. Considering the status of music in American educational policy, it indicates a significant change, in which music has been recognized as an educational priority for the first time in the history of education and has become a basic academic subject in the American federal education policy plan, as well as unprecedentedly incorporated in Federal law.

Alternativni pedgoški koncepti v Veliki Britaniji

Abstract: Alternativni pedagoški koncepti postajajo vedno bolj razširjena oblika izobraževanja, zato se posledično pojavlja zmeraj več šol, ki sledijo miselnosti že uveljavljenih konceptov ali pa šole same najdejo svoj koncept, ki sledi miselnosti ustanoviteljev in aktualnim razmeram. Kljub vedno večji razširjenosti alternativnih konceptov, to področje še zmeraj ni dovolj raziskano, saj hitro ugotovimo, da je na voljo veliko informacij le o že uveljavljenih konceptih (Montessori, Waldorf, Summerhill, Reggio Emilia), ostali koncepti pa so praktično neznani. V Veliki Britaniji lahko najdemo veliko število različnih usmeritev, pozornost pa je v tej nalogi namenjena novejšim gibanjem, ki so zanimiva in bolj kot ne nepoznana. Najbolj znano gibanje med temi so demokratične šole, katerega začetnik je šola Summerhill, manj znano pa je gibanje za manjše šole in tako imenovan human scale education.

Human rights education in foreign language learning

Abstract: Today's world is marked by numerous violations of human rights. As teachers, we would like to believe that future violations can be prevented through human rights education which empowers individuals to build and promote a universal human rights culture. Young people should be given the chance to practise what it means to live together in an open and free society while at school; they, therefore, need to be equipped with a knowledge of human rights and the skills to put these rights into practice. The paper addresses issues relating to including lessons on human rights into Slovene primary and secondary education as part of the foreign language learning syllabus, as well as the need to empower future teachers to react appropriately if their students reject other people's perspectives out of hand, or even express radical ideas in class that run contrary to democratic values. It also presents various strategies for enabling future teachers to develop the skills necessary to implement human rights education.

Cross-country entrepreneurial intentions study

Abstract: In this article, we investigate how entrepreneurial intentions of individuals in the eight countries of the Danube region are shaped by different components of individuals’ personal attitudes, the subjective norm and personal behavioral control. We analyze the internal structure of these components as well as some demographic and human capital factors. Cultural and developmental differences influencing variation in causal effects among variables in the model are analyzed. Structural equation modeling is used for data obtained by adult population surveys within the GEM research. Results of our study show that the entrepreneurial intention model is applicable across countries and that the internal effects among components of motivational antecedents exist, although not all hypothesized relationships are confirmed. Our study suggests that the process from perception to intention is similarly shaped across the eight countries of the Danube region, although there are several differences in the magnitude of causal effects as well as differences regarding influential factors.

The Bologna reform of subject teacher education in the newly founded states in the territory of the former Yugoslavia

Abstract: The article provides an overview of carrying out the principles of the Bologna reform in the education of subject teachers in the newly founded states in the territory of the former Yugoslavia. Drawing upon official documents, particularly laws and by-laws, study programmes and constituent documents of individual universities, the comparative analysis of the reform processes between 2004 and 2013 is made within a relatively homogeneous area in teacher education that existed before the break-up of the former joint state. Positive effects and weak points of the reform activities are observed and detected. The analysis has shown that by implementing the Bologna process the differences in the training of subject teachers among the states and universities, and even among individual universities, increased significantly compared to the previous state of education. This is evident not only in the simultaneous implementation of different models (i. e., the duration of studies (3+2, 4+1, 5+0), but also in concurrent application of simultaneous and successive forms of acquiring teacher competences, different academic titles, and particularly in the greatest issue - different levels of education at which teachers acquire teaching competences for the same teacher profile.
