Promoting sustainable development while building upon components of reading literacy

Abstract: The paper sheds light on the evaluation of books for pre-school children and the theory of reading children’s literature while bearing in mind the various components of reading literacy. Like reading literacy, education on sustainability is also a life-long process, and for understanding the concept of sustainability and the role of the individual in its implementation, which begins to form in the pre-school period, we chose the work by Adèle Tariel and Julie de Terssac 1000 Cows (French original: 1000 vaches), which indicates that illustrations affect the comprehension of the story and (at least partially) change or present more clearly the key morphological characteristics of the text. We conducted a case study in which we included part-time students from the third year of Early Childhood Education Studies (n = 13). An analysis of the content of responses was carried out. These demonstrate a broad semantic field of understanding literary-artistic reading and represent an example of interdisciplinary integration that can significantly contribute to the development of components of reading literacy as well as a sustainable future.

Gender Stereotypes in Children's Literature: A Comparative Analysis of the Most Borrowed and Best-Selling Children's Picture Books

Abstract: Picture books are among the first media where children learn about the world around and inside them. It is thus important that what is presented to them be accurate and cause no harm. However, that is exactly what is happening – children are exposed to certain stereotypes that do not hold true for the men and women, who are attributed these gender stereotypes. When children are taught that men are strong and women are weak, they grow up thinking in that way, which causes even further stereotyping and prejudice to occur. In this thesis, I consider why it is important to expose children to diverse plots and characters which differ from stereotypes of female caretakers, mothers, and teachers, and strong, male money-makers. It is not only female characters that are painted negatively, but also the male characters who are sometimes painted as absent fathers. This thesis offers an empirical approach through descriptive analysis and feature coding, supported by a theoretical background. It is imperative to call attention to work that is not appropriate for our siblings, children and students. It is our responsibility to provide them with good quality literature that paints the world as it should be – egalitarian—or at least, as it currently is.

Developing Reading Comprehension in English Course Books for 7th, 8th and 9th Grade of Slovene Primary Schools

Abstract: Reading is a very important part of our lives. As children, we encounter reading through picture books, and later we reach for more demanding texts. The child is becoming literate at reading, which is very important, and reading can also be a starting point for socializing – parents reading together with their children, socializing in book clubs, reading for a reading badge, etc. By reading, children do not only become proficient in reading, but they enrich their speaking skills. Speech, develop their imagination, gain a new source of information, become more versatile and more easily manage different situations. In all this, we should not forget that reading must always be a fun activity, not a constraint or exertion for a child or a student, and that motivation for reading is extremely important. In the master's thesis, I want to highlight the characteristics of reading and reading comprehension, by doing a more detailed analysis of the parts of course books that are designed to develop reading skills, and analyzing the survey, which will reflect students' view of reading comprehension in elementary school.

The importance of visual reading for the interpretation of a literary text

Abstract: In this paper, the two authors showcase the results of a research survey on the role of illustrations in the interpretation of literary texts. The survey sample included students of primary education and preschool education, who were given the poem Učenjak (Scholar) by Niko Grafenauer and asked to answer questions regarding the character’s personality and appearance, the literary space, and other factors. The first group of interviewees was given the poem illustrated by Lidija Osterc and the other the same poem illustrated by Marjan Manček. The results showed that the illustration had a significant impact on the message conveyed by the poem, particularly when the illustrator added the context by representing the character’s environment (which was not explicitly given in the text). Furthermore, the results showed the need for the comprehensive reading of an illustrated text, given that it is the interaction between the verbal and the visual that provides vital information necessary for the reader to understand the message of the dedicated literary work.

TRANSLATION OF SELF-HELP BOOKS: TRANSLATION PROBLEMS IN RHONDA BYRNE'S "THE SECRET"

Abstract: Self-help books are becoming very popular nowadays and have to be translated in other languages in order to be accessible to a wider audience from other countries. All self-help books share the same goal: to help the readers find solutions to their problems. They are written with a specific purpose and have special characteristics, which have to be considered when translating them. This graduation thesis focuses on the translation of self-help books in general and gives an analysis of some aspects of the translation of a specific self-help book - The Secret. This is a self-help book about happiness and getting and achieving everything the readers want in their life, written by Rhonda Byrne in 2006. The thesis looks into some specific problems the translator faced while translating the book from English into the Slovene language and examines the inconsistencies with the original that occurred in the Slovene translation. The first problem addressed is the decision about the use of formal or informal addressing of readers. The translator decided to use a T/V distinction and addresses the readers with a polite second plural V-form of a verb (“vi”) – “vikanje”. The second problem discussed is the problem of non-equivalence of word-meanings. The most common and important verb that is repeated throughout the whole book is verb “want”. Nevertheless, the verb is not translated consistently and is sometimes replaced with other verbs and words. The third problem is the problem of repetition of the lexical items or phrases, which have a cohesive and a rhetoric function. However, the translator did not preserve all the repetitions. The fourth problem the thesis focuses on is the problem of capitalization of words. Some concepts are capitalized in the original, because they are allegorical personification or because of their importance, yet the capitalization is not preserved in all cases in the translation. The main focus of the graduation thesis is to determine how the translator solved the problem of pragmatic adjustment of the book to the Slovene audience and their culture.
